How to get to Nyungwe National Park
Most Nyungwe National Park safaris arrive by road. The park lies in southwestern Rwanda along the Burundi border, roughly 220–230 kilometres and five to six hours from Kigali depending on route, stops, traffic through hill-country towns, and whether your lodge serves the Uwinka or Gisakura / Cyamudongo sectors. Chimpanzee trekking briefings concentrate at sector-specific points — confirm your property's drive time the night before, not only distance from the capital.
From Kigali
Standard overland transfers use paved highways south or southwest — commonly via Huye (Butare) toward the park's eastern approaches, or west via Muhanga and the Lake Kivu corridor toward Gisakura. The journey crosses Rwanda's iconic thousand-hills scenery; organized tours coordinate RDB permits, activity briefings, and lodge check-in. Self-drivers should pre-book permits, carry cash for park fees where required, and confirm final lodge access roads — some forest properties use steep, narrow drives off main highways.
Breaking the drive with a night in Huye or on Lake Kivu turns access into a scenic circuit rather than a single long haul on arrival day.
From Lake Kivu
Lake Kivu is Nyungwe's natural western partner — travelers decompress after gorillas or chimps on lakeside boat trips and shoreline lodges before or after forest nights. Rubavu (Gisenyi), Karongi (Kibuye), and Rusizi each imply different transfer times to Uwinka versus Gisakura:
- Karongi (Kibuye) to Gisakura — often two to three hours along scenic ridge roads.
- Rubavu (Gisenyi) to Nyungwe — longer southern routing; plan half-day transfers.
- Rusizi / Kamembe — useful for regional flight connections; forest drives still require half-day planning.
Many itineraries sequence Volcanoes gorillas → Lake Kivu → Nyungwe chimps — logical altitude and exertion flow when permits align.
From Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park sits northeast of Nyungwe. Direct transfers without Lake Kivu rest are long full-day drives — most operators insert at least one lakeside night. Gorilla trek days should not back directly onto Cyamudongo chimp briefings without realistic fatigue assessment.
From Akagera National Park
Akagera National Park lies east along the Tanzania border. Akagera–Nyungwe combinations typically route through Kigali — allow two travel days or a capital overnight rather than one marathon cross-country drive. Eastern savannah wildlife and western rainforest differ ecologically; sequencing Akagera before Nyungwe (or reverse) works when nights are placed logically.
From Gishwati-Mukura National Park
Gishwati-Mukura National Park — a smaller forest reserve north of Nyungwe toward Volcanoes — suits quiet primate walks on western routes. Transfer times depend on which Gishwati sector is visited; many travelers treat it as a half-day or single-night stop between gorillas and Nyungwe rather than a duplicate forest experience.
Flights and regional access
Road access dominates Nyungwe logistics. Kamembe airport near Rusizi serves some regional connections; most international visitors fly into Kigali International Airport and drive southwest. Charter options exist for premium itineraries — confirm current operators rather than assuming scheduled service to the forest edge. Fly-in guests still need ground transport to Cyamudongo and Uwinka briefing points.
Sector logistics: Uwinka vs Gisakura / Cyamudongo
Uwinka Visitor Centre — canopy walkway, some colobus routes, ridge trails — suits lodges on the park's central-eastern access. Gisakura cluster properties sit closer to Cyamudongo chimp briefing for many habituated communities. Booking lodge and permits in mismatched sectors creates pre-dawn drives exceeding ninety minutes — share activity confirmations with your driver when reserving.
Practical checklist
Carry permit confirmation, passport copies, yellow fever certificate if required on your wider itinerary, insect repellent, and daypack trekking gear in the vehicle — not buried in lodge luggage. Share chimp briefing time with your driver so morning pickup accounts for Uwinka or Cyamudongo registration queues.
Rwanda's roads are generally excellent; night driving on forest approach roads is discouraged — plan to reach lodges before dark when possible.
