7 Days Rwanda Primates Tour — Gorillas, Golden Monkeys & Chimps
Rwanda · Primates across Volcanoes & Nyungwe
Tour overview
The full-title 7-day Rwanda primates tour — gorillas, golden monkeys, and chimps — packaged for travellers searching the complete safari name. Identical primate focus to our 7-day Rwanda Primates itinerary: three habituated primate treks across Volcanoes and Nyungwe with canopy walkway and colobus options.
Rwanda issues roughly 80 gorilla permits daily across ten families. Golden monkey groups are smaller and treks typically shorter (1–3 hours). Nyungwe chimps require 05:00 starts for best tracking success.

Day-by-day itinerary
Kigali to Volcanoes foothills — scenic RN4 to Musanze
Scenic drive northwest on RN4 from Kigali to Musanze (approx. 2–2.5 hours). Lodge check-in with direct Volcanoes National Park views — Karisimbi, Bisoke, and Sabyinyo on the horizon over emerald terraced hills.
Afternoon optional Twin Lakes excursion for photography and grey crowned crane, or Musanze market for local produce. Confirm porter arrangements and waterproof trek gear tonight — three primate permit days ahead.
Volcanoes lodge near Kinigi
Mountain gorilla trekking from Kinigi headquarters
Kinigi briefing at 07:00. Gorilla trek into Volcanoes bamboo and hagenia forest — RDB assigns one of ten habituated families (eight visitors per group daily).
Safari activity | Mountain gorilla trekking
One hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family — silverback displays, juveniles in bamboo, and certificate presentation at Kinigi.
Afternoon lodge recovery. Volcanoes protects roughly a third of the world's remaining mountain gorillas across ten habituated groups. Porters recommended on steep trails — conserve energy for golden monkey trek tomorrow.
Same Volcanoes lodge
Golden monkey trekking — bamboo forest morning
Morning golden monkey trek in Virunga bamboo zones — Albertine Rift endemics (Cercopithecus mitis kandti) with striking orange flanks. Troops are fast-moving and colourful; treks typically 1–3 hours on trail, far less strenuous than gorilla hikes.
Safari activity | Golden monkey trekking
Albertine Rift endemic primates leaping through bamboo understory — roughly USD 100 per permit through RDB at Kinigi.
Afternoon at leisure or Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village visit for traditional Intore dance and community crafts — former poachers turned cultural ambassadors. Rest before long drive south tomorrow; pack tonight for 5–6 hour transfer to Nyungwe.
Same Volcanoes lodge
Drive to Nyungwe — Kigali–Huye–Nyungwe corridor
After breakfast, drive south through Kigali and Huye to Nyungwe National Park (approx. 5–6 hours, 220–230 km). Lunch en route — optional National Ethnographic Museum stop in Huye.
Arrive Gisakura or Uwinka lodge by late afternoon. Landscape shifts from volcanic foothills to tea plantations and primary montane forest. Chimp permit confirmed for tomorrow's 05:00 start — packed breakfast arranged tonight.
Nyungwe forest lodge
Chimpanzee trekking — pre-dawn montane forest track
05:00 departure to trailhead. Track habituated chimpanzees through Nyungwe's steep, misty forest with RDB rangers — best success at dawn when chimps are most active.
Safari activity | Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe
Pre-dawn track in Cyamudongo or Uwinka sector — pant-hoots, grooming, and close social behaviour at roughly USD 90 per permit.
Afternoon rest at lodge. Nyungwe's 1,019 km² holds 13 primate species and 322+ birds — tomorrow brings canopy walkway and colobus trek before the return drive to Kigali.
Same Nyungwe lodge
Canopy walkway & Rwenzori colobus trek
Morning Igishigishigi canopy bridge — walk among the treetops up to 70 metres above the forest floor with Albertine Rift birdlife. Afternoon Rwenzori colobus monkey trek — troops of 400+ colobus among Nyungwe's most photogenic primates.
Safari activity | Canopy walk & colobus trek
Two Nyungwe forest highlights — treetop walkway birding and close encounters with large colobus troops in primary montane forest.
Afternoon Rwenzori colobus monkey trek — troops of 400+ colobus among Nyungwe's most photogenic primates. The colobus trail passes through primary hagenia forest where red-collared babbler and yellow-eyed black flycatcher are regular. Relaxed evening before return drive to Kigali tomorrow. Combined Nyungwe activities today — canopy walkway permit and colobus trek included in the primate tour package. One&Only Nyungwe House guests enjoy on-site forest trails without additional transfers.
Same Nyungwe lodge
Return to Kigali — airport or city drop-off
Breakfast at the lodge, then drive north to Kigali or KGL airport (approx. 5–6 hours). Lunch en route in Huye or Muhanga.

Combined permit cost roughly USD 1,690 (gorilla USD 1,500 + golden monkey USD 100 + chimp USD 90) — book all permits months ahead for June–September and December–February peak season through RDB at Kinigi and Nyungwe headquarters.
