2 Days Gorilla Trekking & Mount Bisoke Hike

Rwanda · Gorillas & Bisoke

Tour overview

Combine Rwanda's headline gorilla trek with a Mount Bisoke volcano hike to the crater lake on the summit rim (3,711 m). This active 2-day gorilla and Bisoke itinerary demands good fitness — both activities involve steep volcanic slopes in Volcanoes National Park, and Bisoke is best scheduled after gorilla day when legs still have energy.

Foreign non-resident gorilla permits are USD 1,500 through RDB; Bisoke requires a separate volcano permit (typically around USD 75 — verify current rate). The round-trip hike takes 4–6 hours through mossy hagenia forest to an emerald crater lake often shrouded in mist. See our gorilla trekking guide and permit guide for booking lead times.

Day-by-day itinerary

Kigali to Volcanoes & mountain gorilla trekking — demanding opener

Very early pick-up from Kigali or KGL airport (approx. 05:00) for the northwest drive on RN4 through terraced potato fields, tea plantations, and the highland towns of Ruhengeri district toward Kinigi Park Headquarters (approx. 2–2.5 hours, 110 km). This compressed schedule treks gorillas on arrival day — only recommended if you slept in Kigali the night before, arrive on an early inbound flight, and accept a long first day with limited recovery time before tomorrow's volcano ascent.

Your driver-guide briefs you en route on gorilla etiquette: maintain seven metres from the animals, no flash photography, no eating near the troop, and voice levels kept to a whisper once trackers locate your family. At Kinigi, RDB rangers assign your group to one of ten habituated gorilla families based on stated fitness — families range from near-parking-lot access (Hirwa, Agashya) to steep Sabyinyo slope climbs requiring strong endurance. Roughly 80 permits are issued daily across all families; book months ahead for June–September and December–February peaks.

Safari activity | Mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes NP

Full morning gorilla trek from Kinigi briefing — track a habituated family through bamboo and hagenia forest on the Virunga slopes, then one regulated hour with silverbacks, juveniles, and nursing mothers before transfer to lodge for recovery ahead of tomorrow's Bisoke ascent.

Gorilla briefing and trek — trek with RDB rangers and trackers through Volcanoes National Park bamboo and hagenia forest on the slopes of Karisimbi, Sabyinyo, or Bisoke until your assigned family is located (1–4 hours each way typical, 2–8 hours total). Spend one regulated hour with mountain gorillas — silverback chest-beating displays, juveniles somersaulting through bamboo shoots, mothers nursing infants at arm's length. The park's 160 km² sector protects roughly a third of the world's remaining mountain gorillas; Dian Fossey's Karisoke Research Centre operated in this same forest for decades.

Collect your gorilla certificate at Kinigi headquarters, then transfer to your lodge near Musanze or Kinigi for a late lunch and early dinner. Porters are essential for both days (USD 15–20 per trek) — they carry daypacks, steady you on muddy volcanic trails, and free your hands for trekking poles. Tonight: hydrate aggressively, stretch tired calves and quads, and lay out waterproof boots, garden gloves, and warm layers for tomorrow's Bisoke mud. Avoid alcohol — altitude at 2,400–3,500 m punishes dehydrated legs.

Mount Bisoke volcano hike & return to Kigali

Pre-dawn tea at the lodge, then transfer to Kinigi Park Headquarters for a second 7:00 AM briefing — this time for the Mount Bisoke day hike. Bisoke (also spelled Visoke) is an active Virunga volcano whose last eruption was in 1957; its perfect cone rises to 3,711 m on the Rwanda–DRC border ridge shared with Virunga National Park. A separate RDB volcano permit is required (typically around USD 75 — verify current rate at booking). The trailhead starts around 2,700 m elevation; the summit rim crater lake sits at 3,711 m.

Unlike technical peaks such as Mount Karisimbi (4,507 m, two-day climb), Bisoke is a non-technical day hike — no ropes or crampons — but the muddy, steep trail at altitude punishes unprepared legs, especially after yesterday's gorilla exertion. RDB assigns an armed ranger escort; porters (strongly recommended) help on the slippery upper sections where rope-assisted pulls through mud are common even in dry season.

Safari activity | Mount Bisoke crater-lake hike

Non-technical volcano ascent through hagenia forest, giant lobelias, and Afro-alpine vegetation to an emerald crater lake on the summit rim — 4–6 hours round trip at altitude with views across the full Virunga chain on clear mornings.

The ascent threads through mossy hagenia forest where golden monkeys and bushbuck are occasional sightings, then climbs into Afro-alpine zone with giant lobelias and senecio stands that feel like a prehistoric landscape. The final push to the rim is steep and often muddy — garden gloves help grip rope-assisted sections. At the summit, an emerald crater lake (roughly 400 m diameter) fills the caldera; on clear days the water reflects Bisoke's cone and the DRC border ridge stretches toward Mikeno and Nyiragongo. On misty days the summit feels like a cloud forest cathedral — cold, silent, and surreal.

Descend by late morning or early afternoon (4–6 hours round trip total). Lunch in Musanze — try local brochettes or fresh tilapia at a town restaurant — then drive south on RN4 through terraced highlands back to Kigali or KGL airport (approx. 2–2.5 hours). Combined gorilla and Bisoke permits total roughly USD 1,575 through RDB at Kinigi. Allow buffer time for afternoon/evening flights — two consecutive mornings at altitude leave most travellers genuinely tired.
