5 Days Rwanda Gorillas & Chimpanzees Safari
Rwanda · Volcanoes & Nyungwe
Tour overview
Five days combining Rwanda's two flagship primate experiences: mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park and chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe National Park. Gorilla permits are USD 1,500; chimp permits roughly USD 90 through RDB.
The route arcs from Kigali northwest to the Virungas, then southwest through Huye to Nyungwe's ancient montane forest — 1,019 km² of Albertine Rift biodiversity. Two distinct primate families in one compact country.

Day-by-day itinerary
Kigali to Volcanoes — Musanze foothills and Virunga views
Morning pick-up from Kigali or KGL airport. Drive northwest on RN4 through terraced hills to Musanze and the Kinigi lodge area (approx. 2–2.5 hours, 110 km). Check in with views toward Karisimbi, Bisoke, and Sabyinyo — the Virunga volcanoes that frame tomorrow's gorilla trek.
Afternoon at leisure: optional Twin Lakes (Burera and Ruhondo), Musanze market, or rest at the lodge. The RN4 corridor passes through Muhanga and Gitarama — Rwanda's terraced potato and pyrethrum country — before the road climbs into the cooler Virunga foothills. Early night recommended — gorilla briefing is at 07:00 and porters should be arranged tonight.

Mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Early transfer to Kinigi Park Headquarters for 07:00 briefing. RDB assigns your habituated family — Susa, Amahoro, Kwitonda, and other groups rotate daily across bamboo and hagenia forest at 2,500–3,500 m altitude.
Safari activity | Mountain gorilla trekking
Track a habituated gorilla family through Volcanoes National Park with RDB rangers — one hour with the group on contact, then your gorilla trekking certificate at Kinigi.
Trek with rangers and trackers until the family is located (1–4 hours each way typical). Spend one hour observing silverbacks, juveniles, and nursing mothers. Return for certificate presentation. Afternoon recovery at the lodge — trekking is physically demanding and porters are recommended.
Same Volcanoes lodge as Day 1
Volcanoes to Nyungwe — Kigali transit via Huye
After breakfast, begin the long drive south from the Virungas through Kigali and Huye (Butare) to Nyungwe National Park (approx. 5–6 hours, 220–230 km). Lunch stop en route — often in Huye near the National Ethnographic Museum.
The landscape shifts from volcanic foothills to tea plantations and Albertine Rift forest as you approach Nyungwe's Gisakura or Uwinka lodge area. The road south from Huye climbs through Nyungwe's buffer-zone tea estates — look for L'Hoest's monkey on roadside forest edges near Kitabi. Evening briefing orientation at the lodge. Early bed — chimp trekking requires a 05:00 start tomorrow.
Nyungwe forest lodge
Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe National Park
05:00 transfer to the trailhead in Cyamudongo or Uwinka sector. Track habituated chimpanzees through steep, misty montane forest with RDB rangers — 2–6 hours total until the troop is located, then up to one hour observation. Nyungwe holds 13 primate species; chimps are fast-moving and vocal when feeding.
Safari activity | Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe
Pre-dawn track through ancient montane rainforest to a habituated chimp community — pant-hoots, grooming, and close social behaviour once the troop is located.
Afternoon optional Igishigishigi canopy walkway (separate permit) — suspended up to 70 metres above the forest floor with Albertine Rift birdlife. Or rest at the lodge before tomorrow's return drive.
Same Nyungwe lodge as Day 3
Nyungwe morning activity & return to Kigali
Morning forest walk, Rwenzori colobus trek, or Kamiranzovu waterfall hike (time permitting and per permit allocation). Colobus troops of 400+ individuals are among Nyungwe's most photogenic primates — white mantles against dark forest canopy. The waterfall trail descends through mossy ravines with red-collared babbler and Rwenzori turaco in the flowering trees.
Check out and begin the drive north to Kigali (approx. 5–6 hours) with lunch en route in Huye or Muhanga. The return leg retraces the tea-plantation corridor through Nyanza — former royal capital — before the final descent into Kigali's hilltop suburbs.
Arrive Kigali by late afternoon for hotel drop-off or KGL airport transfer. End of safari.
