7 Days Rwanda Wildlife Safari

Rwanda · Akagera, Volcanoes & Nyungwe

Tour overview

A comprehensive 7-day Rwanda wildlife safari — gorillas in the Virungas, chimps in Nyungwe, and Big Five game drives in Akagera. The full Rwanda circuit without crossing borders: primate forests, savannah plains, and Lake Ihema wetlands in one week.

Rwanda's compact size (26,338 km²) makes this ambitious triangle possible. June–September dry season improves Akagera wildlife concentrations; Nyungwe chimps are tracked year-round at dawn.

Golden monkeys & transfer toward Nyungwe via Huye

Safari activity | Golden monkey trekking

Colourful Albertine Rift endemics in bamboo — lively troops and shorter hikes than gorilla treks at roughly USD 100 per permit.

Overnight near Huye or continue toward Nyungwe if routing allows. Huye (Butare) sits on the Nyabarongo River with the National University of Rwanda nearby — a logical stop for lunch and fuel before the forest climb tomorrow. Chimp permit date is fixed at booking — your consultant confirms whether Day 4 or Day 5 carries the trek. Dinner at lodge with early bed if chimps are tomorrow.

Safari activity | Akagera game drive & Lake Ihema boat

Rwanda's only Big Five savannah — African Parks conservation success with reintroduced lion and rhino plus classic wetland boat safari.

Afternoon second game drive on northern circuits if time allows — leopard on acacia ridges, rhino patrols, and shoebill stork in papyrus channels. Akagera covers 1,122 km² on the Tanzania border, managed jointly by African Parks and RDB since 2010.

Full Rwanda circuit complete — mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, chimps, canopy walkway, and Big Five savannah in seven days without crossing a border.
