Tour overview
A comprehensive 7-day Rwanda wildlife safari — gorillas in the Virungas, chimps in Nyungwe, and Big Five game drives in Akagera. The full Rwanda circuit without crossing borders: primate forests, savannah plains, and Lake Ihema wetlands in one week.
Rwanda's compact size (26,338 km²) makes this ambitious triangle possible. June–September dry season improves Akagera wildlife concentrations; Nyungwe chimps are tracked year-round at dawn.

Day-by-day itinerary
Kigali to Volcanoes — northwest to Kinigi lodges
Pick-up from Kigali or KGL. Drive northwest on RN4 to Musanze and Kinigi (approx. 2–2.5 hours). Check in with Virunga volcano views — Karisimbi, Bisoke, and Sabyinyo frame the skyline.
Afternoon at leisure before gorilla day. Optional Twin Lakes visit or Musanze market. Confirm porter hire tonight — early night essential with briefing at 07:00 tomorrow.
Volcanoes area lodge
Mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park
07:00 briefing at Kinigi. Full morning gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park — one hour with habituated family.
Safari activity | Mountain gorilla trekking
Rwanda's headline wildlife experience — track mountain gorillas through bamboo forest with RDB rangers at USD 1,500 per permit.
Afternoon recovery at lodge. Tomorrow combines golden monkeys with the start of the long drive south toward Nyungwe — pack tonight for partial transfer day.
Same Volcanoes lodge
Golden monkeys & transfer toward Nyungwe via Huye
Morning golden monkey trek in Volcanoes bamboo zones (1–3 hours typical) — Albertine Rift endemics with striking orange flanks. Return to lodge, check out, and begin drive south toward Huye (partial day — approx. 3–4 hours).
Safari activity | Golden monkey trekking
Colourful Albertine Rift endemics in bamboo — lively troops and shorter hikes than gorilla treks at roughly USD 100 per permit.
Overnight near Huye or continue toward Nyungwe if routing allows. Huye (Butare) sits on the Nyabarongo River with the National University of Rwanda nearby — a logical stop for lunch and fuel before the forest climb tomorrow. Chimp permit date is fixed at booking — your consultant confirms whether Day 4 or Day 5 carries the trek. Dinner at lodge with early bed if chimps are tomorrow.
Huye area or Nyungwe approach lodge
Nyungwe — chimpanzee trekking
Complete transfer to Nyungwe National Park if not arrived yesterday. 05:00 chimp trek in Cyamudongo or Uwinka sector (or Day 5 if routing requires — permit dates are fixed at booking through RDB).
Safari activity | Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe
Dawn track through ancient montane rainforest — one of Africa's largest remaining Albertine Rift forests at 1,019 km².
Afternoon rest at Nyungwe lodge. Tomorrow: canopy walk and ambitious long drive east through Kigali to Akagera — early night recommended.
Nyungwe forest lodge
Nyungwe canopy walk & drive to Akagera
Morning Igishigishigi canopy walkway or waterfall hike. Check out and begin long drive east through Kigali to Akagera National Park (approx. 6–7 hours from Nyungwe).
Safari activity | Nyungwe canopy walkway
Suspended bridges above primary montane forest — outstanding birding including Rwenzori turaco and numerous Albertine Rift endemics.
Arrive Akagera lodge by evening after crossing Rwanda diagonally from southwest forest to eastern savannah. Ambitious transfer day — lunch en route in Kigali or Rwamagana. Tomorrow: full Big Five game-drive day and Lake Ihema boat.
Akagera lodge or camp
Full day Akagera — game drives & Lake Ihema boat
Sunrise game drive on northern plains — lion, rhino, elephant, giraffe, zebra, and buffalo across acacia woodland. Return for breakfast, then Lake Ihema boat cruise — hippos, crocodiles, and fish eagles at close range.
Safari activity | Akagera game drive & Lake Ihema boat
Rwanda's only Big Five savannah — African Parks conservation success with reintroduced lion and rhino plus classic wetland boat safari.
Afternoon second game drive on northern circuits if time allows — leopard on acacia ridges, rhino patrols, and shoebill stork in papyrus channels. Akagera covers 1,122 km² on the Tanzania border, managed jointly by African Parks and RDB since 2010.
Same Akagera lodge
Akagera sunrise drive & return to Kigali
Final sunrise game drive en route to park gate — last chance for lion on the plains or elephant at the lakeshore. Roan antelope and eland occur on hill country tracks in the northern Mutumba sector. Drive west to Kigali (approx. 2–2.5 hours). Lunch and airport drop-off at KGL.
Full Rwanda circuit complete — mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, chimps, canopy walkway, and Big Five savannah in seven days without crossing a border. Rwanda's compact 26,338 km² makes this ambitious triangle possible on a single East Africa Tourist Visa — ideal for first-time Africa visitors with one week of leave.
