About this tour
Day-by-day itinerary
Entebbe arrival & city orientation
Meet and greet at Entebbe International Airport or your Kampala hotel. Depending on arrival time, visit the Entebbe botanical gardens for colobus monkeys and hornbills, or the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre for a primer on the species you will encounter over the next twelve days.
Transfer to a lakeside hotel on Lake Victoria. Evening briefing on the clockwise route — north to Murchison, west to Kibale and Queen Elizabeth, southwest to Bwindi and Mgahinga, then back via the Rwenzori foothills.

Ziwa rhinos — Murchison Falls
Depart early north to Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch for on-foot rhino tracking with armed rangers (approx. 3 hours from Kampala). Southern white rhinos are reintroduced here after local extinction in the 1980s — Uganda’s only place to see rhinos in the wild.
Safari activity | Ziwa rhino tracking on foot
Walk with armed rangers to within safe viewing distance of southern white rhinos — Uganda’s only wild rhino experience before Murchison’s savannah giants.
After lunch, continue into Murchison Falls National Park and visit the top of the falls viewpoint where the Nile squeezes through a 7-metre gorge. Check in at your Paraa-area lodge for dinner overlooking the Victoria Nile.
Murchison wildlife day
Pre-dawn game drive on the northern bank Buligi circuit — Rothschild’s giraffe, elephant herds, buffalo, Jackson’s hartebeest and Uganda kob are common; lion and leopard are possible at first light. Return for breakfast at the lodge.
Safari activity | Nile boat cruise to Murchison Falls
Afternoon launch on the Victoria Nile toward the base of the falls — hippos, crocodiles, elephant at the water’s edge, and classic birdlife along the papyrus banks.
Afternoon launch cruise on the Victoria Nile toward the base of Murchison Falls. Hippos yawning at close range, Nile crocodiles on the banks, and elephant coming to drink make this one of Uganda’s classic boat safaris. African fish eagles and Goliath herons patrol the papyrus edges.

Murchison to Kibale Forest
After breakfast, begin the long drive southwest (approx. 6–7 hours) through Masindi, Hoima and Fort Portal. The landscape shifts from northern savannah to tea plantations and crater lakes as you approach the Albertine Rift.
Stop for lunch en route in Fort Portal — the gateway to Kibale and the Rwenzori foothills. Arrive at your forest lodge by late afternoon. Optional nocturnal walk near the lodge if offered. Tomorrow combines chimp trekking with Bigodi wetland.
Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale
Early briefing at Kanyanchu Visitor Centre, then join UWA rangers for a chimpanzee trek through Kibale’s mature rainforest. Tracking typically takes 2–4 hours with one hour on contact.
Safari activity | Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale
Track a habituated chimp community through mature rainforest with UWA rangers — one hour with the group once located, with excellent chances of close-up social behaviour.
Afternoon Bigodi Wetland walk for red colobus and great blue turaco, or rest at the lodge.
Kibale to Queen Elizabeth — Kazinga
Morning drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park (approx. 2–3 hours) via Kasese, skirting the Rwenzori range on clear mornings. Check in near Mweya and lunch at the lodge.
Safari activity | Kazinga Channel boat safari
Afternoon two-hour boat cruise on the channel linking Lakes George and Edward — dense hippo pods, elephant and buffalo on the banks, and outstanding birding including skimmers and kingfishers.
Afternoon 2-hour Kazinga Channel boat safari — one of Africa’s densest hippo populations; buffalo and elephant herds drink at the banks, and the birdlist exceeds 600 species.
Kasenyi & Ishasha
Dawn game drive on the Kasenyi Plains — lion prides stalk Uganda kob at first light. Return for breakfast, then drive south to the Ishasha sector (approx. 2 hours).
Safari activity | Ishasha tree-climbing lion tracking
Afternoon drives scanning fig trees for lions resting in branches — a behaviour unique to Ishasha and Tanzania’s Lake Manyara.
Afternoon game drives scanning fig trees for tree-climbing lions. Overnight at Enjojo Lodge or Ishasha Jungle Lodge.
Ishasha to Bwindi
Morning Ishasha game drive with a final tree-lion search, then continue into the Kigezi highlands toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (approx. 3–4 hours).
The road climbs through terraced hillsides and tea plantations before dropping into Bwindi’s montane forest belt. Arrive at your sector lodge by afternoon. Evening briefing on gorilla etiquette, trekking gear and tomorrow’s early start.
This explorer circuit deliberately pairs Ishasha’s tree-climbing lions with Bwindi’s mountain gorillas — two of Uganda’s most sought-after wildlife experiences in consecutive days.
Bwindi sector lodge
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi
Early breakfast and transfer to park headquarters for briefing. With UWA rangers and trackers, begin your mountain gorilla trek into Bwindi’s montane forest — trekking can take 2–8 hours.
Safari activity | Mountain gorilla trekking
Track a habituated gorilla family through Bwindi’s montane forest with UWA rangers — one hour with the group on contact, then your gorilla trekking certificate on return.
On contact, spend one hour with the habituated gorilla family. Afternoon rest at the lodge.
Bwindi to Mgahinga — golden monkeys
Morning transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (approx. 1–2 hours) — Uganda’s smallest gorilla park on the Virunga volcano slopes. Check in at Mount Gahinga Lodge or similar.
Safari activity | Golden monkey tracking in Mgahinga
Afternoon trek for endangered golden monkeys in bamboo forest on the Virunga slopes — a lighter primate encounter after Bwindi’s gorilla day.

Rwenzori foothills community walk
Explore the Rwenzori Mountains fringe villages and tea plantations near Kasese with views of Margherita Peak (5,109 m) on clear mornings. Visit a local community or craft cooperative.
Safari activity | Rwenzori foothills community walk
Guided walk through tea plantations and Bakonzo villages with views of the snow-capped Mountains of the Moon — geography and culture beyond checklist game drives.
A gentler day focused on landscape and culture. Multi-day Rwenzori hiking can be added on request for summit attempts.
Kasese area hotel
Kasese — Entebbe departure
Breakfast and return drive to Entebbe (approx. 7–8 hours) via Fort Portal and Mubende.
