3 Days Uganda Gorillas from Kigali, Rwanda

Multi-country · Kigali start, Bwindi trek

Tour overview

This 3-day Uganda gorilla safari from Kigali is one of the smartest shortcuts in East Africa: Kigali's international airport sits only 3–4 hours from southern Bwindi Impenetrable National Park via the Cyanika border (Kisoro–Musanze). You avoid the long drive from Entebbe while still trekking on the Ugandan side, where foreign non-resident gorilla permits are currently around USD 800 through UWA — substantially less than Rwanda's Volcanoes tariff. See our permit guide for current rates.

The route crosses the Rwanda–Uganda frontier at Cyanika with standard East Africa Tourist Visa or separate Rwanda/Uganda visas. Your guide handles immigration paperwork while you present passport, yellow-fever certificate (if required) and printed permit confirmation. Rushaga, Nkuringo and occasionally Buhoma sectors are reachable from this corridor; sector assignment depends on permit availability at booking.

Day-by-day itinerary

Kigali to southern Bwindi — scenic drive via Cyanika border

Meet your driver-guide at Kigali International Airport or your city hotel (pick-up from 8:00 am, earlier on request for late-afternoon arrivals the previous day). Drive northwest through the rolling hills of Musanze District — Rwanda's most photogenic countryside — toward the Cyanika border post between Kisoro (Uganda) and Musanze (Rwanda).

On clear days the Virunga volcanoes — Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo — frame the horizon. Clear Rwanda exit and Uganda entry with your guide's assistance (allow 30–45 minutes at busy periods; East Africa Tourist Visa simplifies both sides). Continue to your lodge near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park on the Rushaga, Nkuringo or Kisoro side.

Evening briefing on gorilla trekking etiquette: maintain 10 metres distance, no flash photography, voices low, no eating or drinking near gorillas. Prepare trekking clothing — long trousers, gaiters, waterproof jacket — and consider hiring porters locally (recommended on steep terrain; approx. USD 15–20).

Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Early breakfast and transfer to your assigned UWA sector headquarters — Rushaga, Nkuringo, Ruhija or Buhoma depending on permit allocation. 07:00 ranger briefing groups trekkers by fitness and interest, then allocates you to a habituated mountain gorilla family.

Safari activity | Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi

Track a habituated gorilla family through montane forest with UWA rangers and trackers — one hour with the group on contact, then your gorilla trekking certificate on return.

Trek with armed rangers through montane forest on steep, sometimes muddy trails. Expect 2–6 hours of hiking depending on the family's location; porters carry daypacks and assist on slippery sections. When the gorillas are located you spend one hour observing feeding, grooming, silverback displays and family interaction — often surprisingly intimate despite the dense vegetation.

Return to base for your trekking certificate, then optional Batwa cultural experience or forest birding near the lodge if energy allows. Bwindi holds 350+ bird species including many Albertine Rift endemics such as African green broadbill and Shelley's crimsonwing.

Bwindi to Kigali — border crossing and departure

Leisurely breakfast with optional morning community walk through terraced hillsides or souvenir stop in Kisoro town (African crafts, locally grown coffee). Re-cross the Cyanika border back into Rwanda and continue to Kigali through Musanze's volcanic foothills.

If your flight allows, add a condensed Kigali city tour: Kigali Genocide Memorial (allow 1.5 hours — deeply moving), Kimironko market for fabrics and spices, and city views from Mount Kigali. Airport drop-off for evening departures, or an extra night in Kigali on request.
