3 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari & Golden Monkey Trekking
Rwanda · Gorillas & golden monkeys
Tour overview
Two primate mornings in the Virungas: mountain gorillas and golden monkeys on separate days from Kinigi. This 3-day Rwanda gorilla and golden monkey combo is the most popular dual-permit itinerary in Volcanoes National Park — gorilla hour on Day 2, golden monkeys on Day 3 before returning to Kigali.
Combined permit cost is roughly USD 1,600 (USD 1,500 gorilla + USD 100 golden monkey). Golden monkey treks are shorter and less strenuous — a good recovery morning after gorilla exertion. See our gorilla permit guide for booking lead times.

Day-by-day itinerary
Kigali to Volcanoes — dual-permit preparation
Morning pick-up from Kigali or KGL airport. Optional stop at the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi (allow 2–3 hours) if you land early — powerful context on Rwanda's reconciliation before heading north. Continue northwest on RN4 through terraced potato fields, eucalyptus ridges, and tea plantations to Musanze and your Kinigi-area lodge (approx. 2–2.5 hours, 110 km).
Check in with views toward Karisimbi (4,507 m) and Bisoke on the Volcanoes National Park boundary — the park's 160 km² protects roughly a third of the world's remaining mountain gorillas across ten habituated families on the Virunga slopes shared with Uganda's Mgahinga and DRC's Virunga National Park. Afternoon at leisure near Musanze: optional Musanze Caves visit (2 km lava-tube system), Twin Lakes Burera and Ruhondo excursion with views back toward the park, Iby'Iwacu cultural village, or simply rest and acclimatise to 2,400 m elevation before two consecutive primate mornings.
Your guide confirms both permit allocations at the Kinigi briefing centre — gorilla (USD 1,500) and golden monkey (approx. USD 100) are issued from the same RDB office. Arrange porters for tomorrow (USD 15–20, strongly recommended on gorilla day), pack waterproof gaiters and gardening gloves, and review fitness level for family allocation. Early dinner and bed — Kinigi gorilla briefing starts at 7:00 AM.

Mountain gorilla trekking — Virunga flagship
Transfer to Kinigi Park Headquarters for 7:00 AM briefing. RDB rangers assign your group to one of ten habituated families based on stated fitness — Susa, Amahoro, Hirwa, and Agashya range from near-parking-lot access to steep Sabyinyo slope climbs requiring good endurance. Roughly 80 gorilla permits are issued daily (eight visitors per family).
Safari activity | Mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes NP
Track a habituated gorilla family through bamboo and hagenia forest with RDB rangers — one regulated hour with silverbacks, juveniles tumbling through vegetation, and nursing mothers on the Virunga slopes.
Trek with trackers through Volcanoes National Park until your assigned family is located (2–8 hours round trip at 2,500–3,500 m). Bamboo, hagenia, and volcanic mud underfoot; porters carry daypacks on steep sections. Spend one regulated hour with the gorillas — silverback displays, juveniles somersaulting through bamboo, mothers nursing infants. Rangers enforce the seven-metre rule and no-flash photography throughout contact time.
Collect your certificate at Kinigi headquarters, return to lodge for lunch. Afternoon recovery essential after gorilla exertion — optional massage at Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel, gentle forest-edge walk on tea plantation fringes, Twin Lakes excursion, or simply rest by the lodge fire overlooking the Virunga chain. Tomorrow's golden monkey trek is shorter and less steep — ideal as a second primate morning without overloading tired legs. See our permit guide for seasonal booking tips.

Golden monkey trekking & return to Kigali
Second morning primate activity: transfer to Kinigi for golden monkey tracking in bamboo zones on the lower Virunga slopes. Albertine Rift endemics (Cercopithecus mitis kandti) with vivid orange-gold flanks feed on bamboo shoots, lichen, and seasonal fruits — troops of 30–80 individuals move fast through the understory, often approaching within a few metres on the trail.
Safari activity | Golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes NP
Track habituated golden monkeys through bamboo forest on the lower Virunga slopes — a lighter second morning after gorilla day, with lively troops leaping through the understory at 2,500–3,000 m elevation.
Golden monkey treks are typically 1–3 hours on trail and less steep than yesterday's gorilla hike — ideal recovery activity before the drive back to the capital. Juveniles play-fight in bamboo clearings while adults groom; observation time feels more dynamic than the solemn gorilla hour. Descend to Kinigi for your second certificate, return to lodge for lunch, then drive south on RN4 through terraced highlands to Kigali (2–2.5 hours) or KGL airport for afternoon departures. Combined permit cost for this dual-primate itinerary is roughly USD 1,600 (gorilla USD 1,500 + golden monkey approx. USD 100) through RDB at Kinigi headquarters.
