Tour overview
Two gorilla trekking permits on consecutive days in Volcanoes National Park — the ultimate Rwanda primate immersion for photographers and serious gorilla enthusiasts. At USD 1,500 per permit (USD 3,000 total), this is a significant investment rewarded by comparing two habituated families' behaviour, silverback dynamics, and forest habitats.
RDB assigns different families each day — you may trek Susa, Amahoro, Kwitonda, or other groups ranging from 1–4 hours. Two nights near Kinigi eliminate pre-dawn drives from Kigali.

Day-by-day itinerary
Kigali to Volcanoes — Kinigi lodge and two-day permit briefing
Morning pick-up from Kigali or KGL airport. Transfer northwest to Musanze / Kinigi lodge (approx. 2–2.5 hours). Check in with views toward the Virunga volcanoes — sleeping near Kinigi eliminates the pre-dawn dash from Kigali on both trek mornings.
Afternoon briefing on two-day gorilla permit protocol. RDB assigns different families each morning based on fitness, trail conditions, and daily rotation — you may trek Susa (largest group), Amahoro, Kwitonda, Agashya, or others. Confirm porter hire for both days (USD 15–20 per day, paid locally). Pack waterproof layers — Volcanoes trails are often muddy even in dry season.

First gorilla trek — assigned family Day 1
07:00 briefing at Kinigi Park Headquarters. Trek to first assigned family in Volcanoes National Park — RDB issues roughly 80 permits daily across ten habituated groups, eight visitors per family.
Safari activity | First mountain gorilla trek
Day one of two consecutive gorilla permits — one hour with your first habituated family, noting group size, terrain, silverback behaviour, and forest habitat.
One hour observation on contact. Note the family dynamics, terrain difficulty, and trek duration for comparison tomorrow. Susa (largest group, often steepest trek) and Amahoro (calmer, smaller family) illustrate the range of Volcanoes experiences. Return for certificate. Afternoon rest at lodge — conserve energy for second permit day.

Second gorilla trek — different family allocation
Second 07:00 briefing and trek with a different family allocation. Photographers and serious enthusiasts value the contrast — large Susa group (30+ members, often steepest trek) versus intimate Amahoro (calmer silverback, gentler terrain).
Safari activity | Second mountain gorilla trek
Consecutive-day gorilla immersion at USD 3,000 total permit cost — compare two families' silverback dynamics, juvenile behaviour, and forest habitats side by side.
Certificate ceremony on return. Afternoon at leisure — optional lodge spa, short forest walk on Bisate or Sabyinyo property trails, or simply rest. Two gorilla permits in two days is physically demanding even for fit trekkers.

Return to Kigali — optional golden monkey before departure
Relaxed breakfast with volcano views. Optional golden monkey trek (separate USD 100 permit) if energy and flight schedule allow — shorter bamboo-forest hike, typically 1–3 hours on trail, before departure.
Safari activity | Optional golden monkey trek
Albertine Rift endemic golden monkeys in bamboo — a lively, colourful add-on before the RN4 drive back to Kigali if your flight schedule allows.
Drive to Kigali (approx. 2–2.5 hours). Optional lunch in Musanze before departure. Airport drop-off at KGL or city hotel — Heaven Boutique, Marriott, or Urbn C for overnight connections.
Ultimate Rwanda gorilla immersion complete — two families across three nights near Kinigi without a single pre-dawn dash from the capital. Total permit investment USD 3,000 for travellers who refuse to compromise on primate time. See our permit guide for RDB booking lead times of 3–12 months in peak season.
