1 Day Uganda Gorilla Tour (from Kigali or Kisoro)

This is an intensive single-day gorilla trek for travellers already in the Rwanda–Uganda border region — not a sightseeing day. You need confirmed UWA gorilla permits (foreign non-resident tariffs currently around USD 800; see our permit guide), solid hiking fitness, waterproof boots and a willingness to start before dawn. The route targets southern Bwindi Impenetrable National Park sectors (Rushaga or Nkuringo) or, when permits are issued there, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park — all within practical reach of Kisoro town or a pre-dawn run from Kigali. From Kigali (Rwanda): Your driver-guide collects you from a city hotel (Kigali Serena, Hotel des Mille Collines or airport-area lodge) around 4:00–5:00 am. The road runs southwest through Musanze district and the Virunga foothills — views of dormant volcanoes and tea terraces in early light. Cross at Cyanika (preferred for Rushaga, Nkuringo and Mgahinga) or Gatuna depending on permit sector and traffic; your guide handles immigration paperwork on both sides while you keep passport and permit voucher ready. East African Community nationals may use an ID card; other passport holders need a valid Uganda visa or eligible EAC visa arrangement. Packed breakfast is eaten in the vehicle; total driving to the briefing point is typically 3–4 hours from central Kigali. From Kisoro (Uganda): A much shorter transfer — 30–90 minutes on murram roads to your assigned UWA sector gate. Kisoro sits at roughly 1,900 m beneath the Virunga cones; morning mist often clings to the valleys before the forest opens. Travellers Rest Hotel and Kisoro Tourist Hotel are the usual pre-trek bases. If you overnighted near Bwindi instead, sector lodges at Rushaga or Nkuringo cut the morning drive to minutes. Arrive at park headquarters for the 07:00–08:00 ranger briefing: rules on distance (7 metres minimum), no flash photography, maximum one hour with the group, and what to do if a silverback charges. UWA assigns a habituated family based on your permit — southern Bwindi holds multiple groups across steep ridges; Mgahinga’s Nyakagezi group ranges the bamboo slopes of Mount Gahinga. Porters are optional but strongly recommended on Rushaga and Nkuringo trails (typically USD 15–20, paid locally); they carry daypacks and steady you on muddy roots. Walking sticks are issued at the trailhead. The trek enters montane forest between 2,200–2,600 m — giant lobelia, dense understorey, ladder-like tree roots and sections where the trail feels near-vertical. Trackers radio ahead while you follow fresh dung, broken vegetation and nest sites. Total walking is commonly 2–8 hours round trip depending on family movement; Nkuringo and Rushaga are among Bwindi’s most demanding sectors. Along the way you may notice black-and-white colobus, L’Hoest’s monkey, colourful sunbirds and the calls of bar-tailed trogon — the forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting roughly half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. When trackers locate your group, you leave packs with porters and approach quietly. Spend one regulated hour observing — a dominant silverback may beat his chest or glance your way; juveniles tumble through Hagenia branches; infants ride on their mothers’ backs. No two visits are identical, but the proximity is extraordinary. After the hour, hike back to headquarters, receive your gorilla trekking certificate, and eat a packed lunch before the return drive. Return logistics: Kisoro-based travellers reach town by mid-afternoon. Kigali same-day returns mean border crossing and 3–4 hours of driving — expect arrival between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm, sometimes later if the trek ran long. Kigali–Kigali in one day is only realistic for southern sectors with early permits and fit participants; we strongly recommend a night in Kisoro or Bwindi before and after. Ask us to quote a 2- or 3-day version with Lake Mutanda or golden monkey tracking at Mgahinga if dates allow. What to pack: Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support; gaiters in wet months; long trousers and long sleeves (stinging nettles and ants at the trail edge); light rain jacket and pack liner; gardening gloves for gripping vines; neutral-coloured clothing; daypack under 8 kg; passport, printed permit voucher and Uganda visa confirmation; energy snacks; 2–3 litres of water (supplementary bottles provided in the vehicle); camera without flash; optional knee supports for steep Nkuringo descents. Gorilla permits and park fees are included in your package — porter fees (USD 15–20) and border visa costs are paid locally or separately.
