Tour overview
Six days pairing Virunga gorillas with Akagera National Park savannah wildlife — Rwanda's only Big Five destination. African Parks' conservation success brought lions and rhinos back to Akagera's 1,122 km² of acacia woodland and papyrus wetlands.
Contrasts mountain forest primate encounter with classic game drives and a Lake Ihema boat cruise. Ideal for travellers wanting gorillas plus lion, elephant, and hippo without leaving Rwanda.

Day-by-day itinerary
Kigali to Volcanoes — northwest transfer to Kinigi
Morning pick-up from Kigali or KGL. Drive northwest on RN4 to Musanze and Kinigi lodges (approx. 2–2.5 hours). Check in with Virunga volcano views — Karisimbi and Bisoke dominate the skyline over terraced potato and pyrethrum fields.
Afternoon at leisure before gorilla day. Optional Twin Lakes visit (Burera and Ruhondo) or Musanze Caves exploration. Early night recommended — briefing tomorrow at 07:00; confirm gorilla permit and porter hire tonight.
Volcanoes area lodge
Mountain gorilla trekking at Kinigi headquarters
Transfer to Kinigi Park Headquarters for 07:00 briefing and permit check. Trek into Volcanoes National Park with RDB rangers until your assigned habituated family is located.
Safari activity | Mountain gorilla trekking
One hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family in bamboo and hagenia forest — Rwanda's signature wildlife encounter at USD 1,500 per permit.
Spend one hour with the gorillas, collect your certificate, return to the lodge. Trackers may have located Susa, Amahoro, or Kwitonda overnight — terrain ranges from bamboo slopes to steeper hagenia forest. Afternoon rest and pack for tomorrow's long transfer east.
Same Volcanoes lodge
Volcanoes to Akagera — long drive east and afternoon game drive
Early departure after breakfast. Drive east through Kigali and Rwamagana to Akagera National Park (approx. 5–6 hours total from Musanze). The landscape shifts dramatically from volcanic highlands to acacia savannah and papyrus swamps on the Tanzania border.
Check in at your lodge inside or on the park boundary. Afternoon guided game drive on southern plains — giraffe, zebra, impala, buffalo, and elephant are reliable first-day sightings. The Mutumba Hills circuit offers elevated viewpoints over acacia woodland; defassa waterbuck and topi graze the lake margins. Lion and rhino reintroduced by African Parks in 2015–2017 patrol northern sectors; your guide knows current pride territories.
Akagera lodge or camp
Full day Akagera — sunrise and afternoon game drives
Pre-dawn sunrise game drive when predators and herbivores are most active on the northern plains and lakeshore tracks. Return for breakfast at the lodge, then midday rest during the heat — lion and leopard patrols are most reliable at first and last light.
Safari activity | Akagera game drive
Classic savannah safari in Rwanda's only Big Five park — lion, rhino, elephant, giraffe, zebra, and 500+ bird species across acacia woodland and wetland mosaic.
Afternoon second game drive covering different circuits — elephant herds, topi, waterbuck, and leopard are possible with experienced guiding. Akagera's Kagera River feeds lakes and swamps covering roughly one-third of the reserve. Roan antelope and eland occur on hill country tracks less visited by day-trippers from Kigali.
Same Akagera lodge
Lake Ihema boat cruise & northern plains game drive
Morning boat safari on Lake Ihema — hippos yawning at close range, Nile crocodiles on the banks, African fish eagles, and prolific papyrus-channel birdlife. Herds often drink at the shoreline.
Safari activity | Lake Ihema boat cruise
Close-range hippo and crocodile encounters on Akagera's largest lake — one of Rwanda's best water-based wildlife experiences.
Afternoon game drive on northern plains and hill country where rhino and lion patrols are concentrated. African Parks' rhino monitoring programme has rebuilt a founder population from zero — sightings require patience but reward with genuine Big Five credentials inside Rwanda. Return to lodge for dinner.
Same Akagera lodge
Akagera morning drive & return to Kigali
Final short morning game drive en route to the park gate if time allows — last chance for leopard on acacia ridges or shoebill stork in papyrus channels. The Kagera River valley glows gold at first light when elephant herds cross the plains toward Lake Mihindi. Drive west to Kigali (approx. 2–2.5 hours, 110 km). Lunch in the city at a recommended restaurant or direct airport drop-off at KGL.
End of safari — mountain gorillas in the Virungas and Big Five savannah at Akagera in six days without leaving Rwanda. Optional overnight in Kigali if your international flight departs the following day — Heaven Boutique or Marriott recommended. June–September dry season concentrates wildlife near Lake Ihema and waterholes across the 1,122 km² reserve.
