3 Days Serengeti National Park Safari (Tanzania)
Tanzania · Plains wildlife focus
Tour overview
A focused 3-day Serengeti safari maximises time on Tanzania's flagship park — 14,750 km² of plains, kopjes and river corridors that stage the Great Migration, Africa's largest terrestrial mammal movement. Without the crater detour, you gain an extra half-day on the Serengeti itself.
Ideal when migration viewing is your priority: southern plains for calving (January–March), western corridor Grumeti crossings (May–July), or northern Mara River drama (July–October). Resident cats, elephant and giraffe reward visitors year-round in the central Seronera valley.

Day-by-day itinerary
Arusha to Serengeti National Park — entering the endless plains
Very early departure from Arusha or Moshi (typically 6:00–7:00 am) for the long but spectacular drive west through Maasai pastoral country and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area highlands. The road climbs through montane forest and open grassland before reaching Naabi Hill Gate — the main eastern entrance to Serengeti National Park.
Pause at the Naabi Hill viewpoint for passport-style park registration and your first panoramic view over the Serengeti plains — on clear days the horizon seems infinite. En-route wildlife often appears before you even reach camp: giraffe browsing acacia tops, Thomson's gazelle on the roadside, and crowned cranes in the grass.
The landscape opens to short-grass plains stretching to the horizon — depending on month, wildebeest columns may already be visible. Your sector (Ndutu, Seronera, Western Corridor or Northern Serengeti) is matched to the migration calendar at booking: southern Ndutu for calving (January–March), central Seronera year-round for resident cats, Western Corridor for Grumeti River drama (May–July), or Kogatende for Mara River crossings (July–October).
Safari activity | Serengeti arrival game drive
Afternoon plains wildlife on park entry — first lion prides on kopjes, topi and Coke's hartebeest on the grasslands, martial eagles overhead, and migration herds when season aligns with your assigned sector.
Afternoon game drive on arrival targets the nearest productive wildlife zones — lion prides resting on granite kopjes, spotted hyena at old kills, and mixed herds of zebra and wildebeest when the migration is in range. Your guide reads fresh tracks and positions the vehicle for unhurried viewing before check-in at your camp or lodge.
Safari activity | Optional Serengeti sunset game drive
Golden-hour drive when light permits — silhouetted acacia woodland, bat-eared fox at dusk, and the classic Serengeti sunset that closes your first day on the plains.
Serengeti camp or lodge (sector-matched)
Full day Serengeti National Park — migration and predators
Pre-dawn tea and coffee, then a sunrise game drive as predators hunt in the coolest hours — lion and cheetah are most active before the heat builds. Your guide coordinates with other vehicles via radio to track fresh kills, river-crossing build-ups, or calving concentrations depending on season.
Safari activity | Serengeti sunrise game drive
Dawn predator patrol on the plains — lion at kills, cheetah scanning from termite mounds, and hyena returning to overnight carcasses in the first light of day.
Full-day exploration tailored to your sector: Ndutu woodlands and short-grass plains for calving season and cheetah on the open flats; Seronera river lines for leopard in sausage trees and hippo pools; Western Corridor for Grumeti hippo pools and crocodile crossings at the river; or Northern Serengeti (Kogatende) when herds push toward Kenya's Maasai Mara and Mara River drama peaks.
Safari activity | Full-day Serengeti game drives
Dawn-to-dusk migration tracking or resident predator territories — picnic lunch on the plains, kopje leopard searches, and the deepest Serengeti immersion on a three-day itinerary.
Picnic lunch on the plains — the quintessential Serengeti experience with uninterrupted sky and wildlife all around. Watch for serval in tall grass, eland herds, Grant's gazelle, bat-eared fox at burrows, and vultures spiralling over recent kills. Kopjes (rock outcrops) shelter leopard and lion; cheetah use termite mounds as lookout posts across the short-grass plains.
Afternoon drives follow herd movements or revisit productive predator territories. Your guide positions the vehicle for river-crossing build-ups when applicable — wildebeest and zebra massing at the banks, crocodiles waiting below, and the tension before a crossing attempt. Evening return to camp as acacia silhouettes frame one of Africa's most photographed sunsets.
Activity duration: 10–11 hours game driving
Meals: Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Same camp as Day 1
Morning Serengeti game drive — return to Arusha
Final pre-dawn departure for a morning game drive in the last cool hours — a last chance for lion on the hunt, cheetah stalking gazelle, or elephant herds crossing the plains before you exit the park. Wildlife activity peaks at dawn; this session often delivers the trip's most intimate sightings.
Safari activity | Serengeti farewell morning game drive
Final plains wildlife session before park exit — last lion prides, migration columns when herds are near, and unhurried photography in the soft morning light.
Exit via Naabi Hill Gate and descend the Ngorongoro highlands toward Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Expect 7–8 hours driving; afternoon or evening flights only with late checkout surcharge — confirm flight times when booking.
Fly-out alternative: Scheduled or charter flights from Seronera or Kogatende airstrips save a full return drive and place you in Arusha or Zanzibar within hours — ask us to quote. Road return offers final highland views over the Rift Valley escarpment and Lake Manyara shimmer below the rim.
