5 Days Rwanda Safari — Gorilla Trekking

Rwanda · Extended primate safari

Tour overview

A focused 5-day Rwanda gorilla safari with breathing room — two nights near Volcanoes National Park before and after trekking, plus Kigali cultural time and optional golden monkey or Bisoke hike add-ons. Avoids the rushed 2-day Kigali dash that leaves no recovery margin.

At USD 1,500 per gorilla permit, this package optimises every hour around your forest encounter. See our permit guide for booking lead times (3–12 months for peak season).

Audio-guided tour through Rwanda's principal remembrance site — powerful context before your Volcanoes gorilla experience.

Continue northwest on RN4 to Musanze / Kinigi lodges (approx. 2–2.5 hours). Check in with Virunga views. Early night — gorilla day tomorrow.

Mountain gorilla trekking — Kinigi briefing and forest encounter

07:00 briefing at Kinigi. Trek into Volcanoes National Park with RDB rangers until your habituated family is located.

Safari activity | Mountain gorilla trekking

One hour with mountain gorillas in bamboo and hagenia forest — Rwanda's USD 1,500 permit experience with certificate at Kinigi headquarters.

Spend one hour with the gorillas. Afternoon lodge recovery — massage at Bisate or Sabyinyo, short forest walk, or simply rest. This itinerary deliberately builds recovery time around the USD 1,500 permit day rather than rushing additional activities.

Trek duration2–8 hours round trip
Day 2 | Accommodation
Meal plan: Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner

Same Volcanoes lodge

Optional second activity — golden monkeys, Bisoke or Twin Lakes

Choose your Volcanoes add-on (confirmed at booking): golden monkey trek (USD 100 permit, 1–3 hours in bamboo), Mount Bisoke day hike to crater lake at 3,711 m (USD 75 permit, 4–6 hours round trip), or Twin Lakes excursion to Burera and Ruhondo for photography and birdlife.

Safari activity | Volcanoes add-on day

Golden monkeys in bamboo, Bisoke crater lake hike, or Twin Lakes photography — extend your Virunga experience beyond gorilla day.

Afternoon at leisure at the lodge. Permit and activity confirmed at booking.

Trek duration2–6 hours depending on activity
Day 3 | Accommodation
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Same Volcanoes lodge

Volcanoes at leisure — Dian Fossey, community or spa day

Relaxed day near Volcanoes National Park. Options include Dian Fossey tomb hike orientation (permit required for full trek), Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village for Intore dance, Musanze Caves (2 km lava-tube system), or spa day at lodge — Bisate, One&Only Gorilla's Nest, and Sabyinyo Silverback offer on-site treatments.

Cultural visit | Volcanoes community day

Choose Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village for Intore dance and community crafts, Musanze Caves exploration, or a Dian Fossey orientation — former poachers turned cultural ambassadors near the park boundary.

No early start required — recover fully before tomorrow's return to Kigali. Optional short forest walk on lodge trails with views toward the Virunga chain. This buffer day is what separates a comfortable five-day gorilla safari from a rushed three-day dash.

Day 4 | Accommodation
Meal plan: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Same Volcanoes lodge

Return to Kigali — city lunch and airport drop-off

Relaxed breakfast with volcano views from the lodge terrace. Drive south to Kigali (approx. 2–2.5 hours). Optional brief stop at the Kigali Genocide Memorial if you skipped it on Day 1 — allow 90 minutes if revisiting.

City lunch at a recommended restaurant — Rwandan brochettes, plantains, and fresh passion fruit juice at Repub Lounge, Heaven Restaurant, or Fusion in Kimihurura. Airport drop-off at KGL or hotel overnight if extending. Five days optimised around one gorilla permit with genuine breathing room.
