About this tour
Day-by-day itinerary
Kampala/Entebbe — transfer to Bwindi
Early road transfer southwest to your assigned Bwindi sector — Buhoma, Rushaga or Ruhija (approx. 8–9 hours from Kampala). Lunch at the Equator at Kayabwe, then continue through Mbarara and the Kigezi highlands as tea plantations and terraced fields climb toward the forest.
Check in at your budget or mid-range lodge. Evening briefing on tomorrow's gorilla trek — confirm sector, start time and porter arrangements. Pack waterproof boots and gloves; Bwindi trails are often steep and muddy after rain. Foreign non-resident gorilla permits are widely quoted around USD 800 — your permit is pre-paid and sector-specific.
Shared 4×4 transfers group travellers from Kampala on set departure days — private upgrade available. Sector assignment is confirmed at booking; Rushaga has the most permit availability in peak season.
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Pre-dawn breakfast and transfer to park headquarters. With UWA rangers and trackers, begin your mountain gorilla trek into Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — trekking can take 2–8 hours depending on family location. Sector follows your permit allocation; families move daily and trackers leave before dawn.
Safari activity | Mountain gorilla trekking
Track a habituated gorilla family through Bwindi's montane forest with UWA rangers — one hour with the group on contact, then your gorilla trekking certificate on return.
On contact, spend one hour with the habituated gorilla family — silverback displays, juveniles tumbling through vegetation. Return for your certificate and packed lunch. Afternoon rest at the lodge; porters are strongly recommended on steep trails (typically USD 15–20 per trek).
UWA enforces a 7-metre minimum distance from gorillas — rangers carry rifles for safety. Flash photography is prohibited; rain covers for cameras are essential in Bwindi's wet climate.
Same lodge as Day 1
Community walk or rest day at Bwindi
Optional Batwa cultural trail or village walk near your sector — learn about the forest people's history, traditional fire-making and medicinal plants. The Batwa were the original inhabitants of Bwindi before park gazettement in 1991.
Cultural activity | Batwa heritage trail
Community-led walk with Batwa guides — traditional forest skills, song and dance, and insight into life before resettlement outside the park boundary.
Alternatively, rest at the lodge after yesterday's trek. Great blue turaco, black bee-eater and handsome francolin are possible on short forest-edge walks from most properties.
Same lodge
Bwindi — return to Kampala/Entebbe
After breakfast, begin the return drive north via Mbarara and the Equator (approx. 8–9 hours). Lunch stop en route at Kayabwe or Mbarara — try local tilapia or matoke if time allows.
Airport drop-off in Entebbe for evening flights, or hotel transfer in Kampala. Exit via Kigali (3–4 hours via Katuna or Cyanika border) is possible if your international flight departs from Rwanda — confirm border crossing times with your guide. The return leg via Mbarara passes through Ankole cattle country with distinctive long-horned herds.
