2 Days Akagera National Park Safari

Rwanda · Weekend wildlife escape

Tour overview

2 Day Akagera National Park Safari - Akagera National Park is Rwanda's only savannah Big Five destination — a conservation comeback story on the Tanzania border where lions, rhinos, elephants, buffalo, and leopards share acacia woodland and papyrus wetlands with 500+ bird species. Managed by African Parks since 2010, Akagera contrasts sharply with the mountain forests of gorilla country just two hours from Kigali. This 2-day Akagera safari fits travellers who want classic game drives and a Lake Ihema boat cruise without leaving Rwanda. The park covers roughly 1,122 km² with the Kagera River feeding lakes and swamps that cover about one-third of the reserve — ideal as a standalone short break or a savannah counterpoint to a Volcanoes gorilla trek on the same visa. June–September dry season concentrates wildlife at waterholes and Lake Ihema shores; the short rains (October–November) green the plains and bring migratory birds. Two game drives and one boat safari pack the essentials into a comfortable overnight without rushing back to the capital.

Day-by-day itinerary

Kigali to Akagera & afternoon game drive

Your private 4×4 safari vehicle and English-speaking guide collect you from Kigali or KGL airport after breakfast for the eastbound for the 2 Day Akagera National Park Safari through Rwamagana and Kayonza (approx. 2–2.5 hours, 110 km on good tarmac). The road descends from Kigali's hilltop suburbs into Rwanda's eastern lowlands — tea estates, rice paddies and banana plantations line the route before the landscape opens into acacia savannah near the Tanzania border fence. Enter Akagera National Park via the southern gate, complete park formalities, and check in at your lodge or tented camp inside or on the park boundary. Akagera is Rwanda's only Big Five reserve — a wetland–savannah mosaic where roughly one-third of the 1,122 km² park is lakes, papyrus swamp and the Kagera River floodplain. African Parks' joint management with RDB since 2010 reversed decades of poaching pressure: lions were reintroduced in 2015, black rhino in 2017, and today thriving predator and herbivore populations make this one of East Africa's most remarkable conservation recoveries. After lunch at the lodge, set out on an afternoon guided game drive across open plains and acacia woodland on the Mutumba Hills circuit. Giraffe browse on whistling thorn acacia; Burchell's zebra and impala graze the short grass; topi and waterbuck favour the lake margins; and large buffalo herds drift through the woodland edges at dusk. Reintroduced lion prides hunt zebra and impala on the Kilala Plains, while black rhino patrols are focused in the northern sector — your guide knows the current ranger radio reports and recent sighting patterns. Elephants move between Lake Ihema shores and inland waterholes; leopards require patience and are most often spotted at dawn or on night-drive supplements. The park's bird list exceeds 500 species — from lilac-breasted roller and grey crowned crane on the roadside to papyrus gonolek, shoebill (on lucky days in the swamps), and African fish eagle over every lake. Return to lodge for dinner as the sun sets over the savannah and nightjars call from the acacia scrub.

Sunrise game drive, Lake Ihema boat & return to Kigali

Pre-dawn tea and biscuits, then an early transfer for a sunrise game drive when predators and herbivores are most active on the northern plains near the Kilala Plains and Lake Mihindi tracks. Cool morning air carries the scent of wet grass; mist often hangs over Lake Ihema as buffalo and elephant herds move to the shoreline to drink. Lion activity peaks at first light — your guide positions the vehicle downwind and follows fresh tracks on the sandy roads where leopard and hyena passed overnight. Rhino patrols in the northern sector are the focus of dedicated ranger monitoring; sightings are not guaranteed but the Kilala Plains circuit offers the best chance on a two-day itinerary. Return to the lodge for a full breakfast on the terrace, then time to pack and freshen up before the boat safari.

Safari activity | Sunrise game drive in Akagera

Early-morning drive on the Kilala Plains and lakeshore tracks — peak predator and elephant activity at first light, with golden savannah light and fewer vehicles than the afternoon circuit.
Board a motorised boat for a safari on Lake Ihema — Akagera's largest lake and the park's flagship water experience. The 2-hour cruise threads papyrus channels where hippos surface at close range, Nile crocodiles bask on mud banks, and African fish eagles call from dead trees. Waterbirds include malachite kingfisher, papyrus gonolek, and African jacana on floating vegetation; herds of buffalo and elephant often drink at the Lake Ihema shoreline in the dry season (June–September).

Safari activity | Lake Ihema boat cruise

Close-range hippo and crocodile encounters on Akagera's largest lake — African fish eagles, papyrus channels, and herds drinking at the shoreline on Rwanda's best wetland safari.
After lunch at the lodge, drive west back to Kigali (approx. 2–2.5 hours) through Rwamagana's tea country. Your guide can arrange KGL airport drop-off for evening international flights — allow at least one hour after reaching the capital for check-in. Two days delivers the savannah counterpoint to Rwanda's mountain primate experiences: Big Five country, African Parks conservation, and Lake Ihema's hippos without rushing back to the capital on the same day you arrive. Game drive duration: Approx. 2–3 hours (sunrise) Boat duration: Approx. 2 hours on Lake Ihema Drive time: Approx. 2–2.5 hours return to Kigali Meals: Breakfast and lunch
