How to get to the Kigezi Highlands
Motion sickness on highland roads
Switchback routes affect sensitive travelers — front seats, light meals, and split long transfers across two days reduce nausea between Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi.
The Kigezi Highlands are reached through multiple gateways depending on itinerary direction: overland from Kampala or Entebbe via Mbarara toward Kabale and Lake Bunyonyi; southwest through Queen Elizabeth National Park and Ishasha toward Bwindi; or north from Kisoro and Lake Mutanda after entering Uganda from Kigali. Map distance misleads — highland roads twist through valleys, and a short kilometer count can mean an hour of driving.
From Kampala or Entebbe
Full western routes often pass Lake Mburo National Park or link with Queen Elizabeth on longer safaris before climbing into Kigezi toward Kabale, Bunyonyi, and Bwindi sectors. Direct Kabale approaches from Kampala commonly take eight to ten hours — treat as a safari travel day, not a morning hop. Organized tours coordinate gorilla briefing points with lodge check-in; self-drivers must match accommodation to the correct Bwindi sector gate.
From Kigali, Rwanda
Kigali provides efficient access to southern Bwindi sectors, Kisoro, Mgahinga, and Mutanda for travelers combining Rwanda and Uganda. Visa and border requirements need separate planning — Cyanika or Gatuna crossings depend on routing. Many short gorilla itineraries use Kigali in/out with minimal Kampala time.
From Queen Elizabeth and Kibale
Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi or Bunyonyi is a classic southwestern link — often a full day through Ishasha tree-climbing lion country or Rukungiri routes. From Kibale National Park and Fort Portal, primate safaris continue south toward Kigezi for gorillas after chimps — allow realistic drive days and avoid back-to-back treks without rest.
Internal highland routing
The Kabale–Kisoro road connects Bunyonyi, Echuya Forest, and Mutanda viewpoints. Gorilla trekking sectors in north, central, and south Bwindi require different access roads — confirm permit sector before booking a “Bwindi lodge” generically. Mgahinga treks use Kisoro-area briefing points.
Flights
Charter and scheduled air options to Kisoro or Kihihi airstrips shorten travel for time-limited guests; road transfers from airstrips to lodges still apply on highland tracks. Most comprehensive safaris remain road-based to enjoy scenic Kigezi transitions.
Border crossing documentation
Kigali–Kisoro travelers need valid Rwanda/Uganda visas per nationality, yellow fever certificates if required on wider itineraries, and printed gorilla permit confirmations at checkpoints. Allow buffer beyond GPS estimates — border processing varies by day.
Ishasha and Queen Elizabeth linkage
Routes from Queen Elizabeth through Ishasha tree-climbing lion country toward Kigezi are classic but slow — allow a full day, check Ishasha sector conditions seasonally, and avoid scheduling gorilla briefing the morning after a late arrival. Kihihi airstrip serves some southern Bwindi lodges with onward road transfers.
Lodge transfer coordination
Many lodges meet guests at sector-specific points — confirm whether your booking includes transfers from Kabale, Kisoro, or airstrips. Taxi hires without lodge coordination sometimes underestimate highland drive times.
Two-base vs one-base itineraries
Splitting nights between Bunyonyi and Bwindi sector lodges reduces pre-dawn fatigue but adds packing time — choose based on permit sector, not only scenic preference.

Parking and security at trailheads
Leave no valuables visible in vehicles at busy Bwindi briefing points — use lodge transfers when possible on trek days.
Road works and seasonal closures
Kabale–Kisoro road improvement projects periodically delay transfers — confirm current status week before travel.
Confirm lodge transfer included from airstrip — unscheduled taxi hires from Kihihi cost more than pre-booked safari packages.
Share gorilla permit PDFs with driver-guides — briefing gate names help operators route to correct sector without morning confusion.
From Queen Elizabeth National Park, the Ishasha–Kihihi–Bwindi corridor saves backtracking through Kampala when your permit sector sits in southern Bwindi — confirm road status seasonally because Ishasha black-top sections still connect to rough forest spurs.
