4 Days Kidepo Valley Safari

Uganda · Remote wilderness

Tour overview

4 Days Kidepo Valley Safari Kidepo Valley is Uganda's most remote park — semi-arid savannah against the Morungole Mountains near the South Sudan border. Cheetah, ostrich and large lion prides roam the Narus Valley; the drier Kidepo Valley holds Kanangorok hot springs. Fly-in via Apoka airstrip (2 hours from Entebbe) or road via Gulu/Kitgum.

Day-by-day itinerary

Entebbe/Kampala to Kidepo Valley National Park

Fly from Entebbe to Apoka airstrip (approx. 2 hours) — the recommended option — or begin the long road transfer via Gulu and Kitgum (10–12 hours). On arrival, check in at your Apoka-area lodge and lunch overlooking the Narus Valley.

Safari activity | Narus Valley afternoon game drive

First game drive in Kidepo's permanent water zone — elephant, buffalo, Rothschild's giraffe, zebra and lion prides around Kakine Rock and the Narus River.
Afternoon game drive in the Narus Valley — Kidepo's permanent water source attracts elephant herds, buffalo, Rothschild's giraffe, Burchell's zebra and lion prides. Jackson's hartebeest, oribi and eland graze the plains; ostrich and secretary birds are common on the open ground. Apoka Safari Lodge and Kidepo Savannah Lodge both overlook the Narus Valley — book early in peak season (December–February and June–September). Charter flights depart Entebbe at 07:00 on scheduled days. Drive time: 2 hours by air; 10–12 hours by road Meals: Lunch & dinner

Full day Narus Valley wildlife drives

Pre-dawn and afternoon game drives on the Narus circuit — Kidepo's lion density is among Uganda's highest, with prides often visible on Kakine Rock at sunrise. Cheetah are occasionally seen on the open plains east of Apoka; bat-eared fox and aardwolf occur in the drier zones. Between drives, rest at the lodge pool or watch elephant come to drink at the Narus waterhole. Kori bustard, Abyssinian ground hornbill and red-throated bee-eater are standout birds. The Morungole Mountains form a dramatic backdrop to the south. Kidepo Valley National Park (1,442 km²) receives fewer than 5,000 visitors per year — predator sightings are uncrowded compared with Murchison or Queen Elizabeth. White-eared kob and Chandler's mountain reedbuck occur in the Narus grasslands. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner Accommodation: Same Kidepo lodge as Day 1

Kidepo Valley & Karamojong culture

Morning drive north into the drier Kidepo Valley — ostrich, greater kudu and lesser kudu favour this zone. Visit the Kanangorok hot springs near the South Sudan border, where geothermal water surfaces in the semi-desert landscape.

Cultural activity | Karamojong manyatta visit

Afternoon visit to a traditional Karamojong homestead — cattle herding culture, manyatta architecture, and beadwork in Uganda's most remote northeastern corner.
Afternoon Karamojong manyatta visit near the park boundary — learn about pastoral cattle culture, traditional homesteads (manyattas) and beadwork. Return to the lodge for sundowners on the Katurum kopje if time allows. The Kidepo River runs dry for much of the year; wildlife concentrates at the Narus River in the south. Klipspringer and dik-dik favour the rocky kopjes above the valley floor. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner Accommodation: Same Kidepo lodge

Morning drive — departure

Final sunrise game drive in the Narus Valley for last sightings — lion, elephant and giraffe are active at first light. Return for breakfast, check out, and transfer to Apoka airstrip for the flight to Entebbe or begin the road return via Kitgum and Gulu. Airport drop-off in Entebbe for connecting flights, or overnight in Kampala after a long road day. Road transfers from Kidepo to Kampala (approx. 12 hours via Kitgum and Gulu) are possible but exhausting — fly-out is strongly recommended on a 4-night itinerary. Meals: Breakfast & lunch
