3 Days Mount Sabinyo Hike (Mgahinga)

Uganda · Virunga volcano trek

Tour overview

3 Days Mount Sabinyo Hike Uganda Mount Sabinyo (3,669 m) in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the only Virunga peak where the summit marks the junction of Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo — you can literally stand in three countries at once. The hike is technical by Ugandan standards: wooden ladders, rope sections and exposed ridges on the “Old Man’s Teeth” summit pyramid. Allow 7–9 hours round trip on trek day.

Day-by-day itinerary

Kampala, Entebbe or Kigali to Kisoro — Mgahinga foothills

Your guide collects you from Kampala or Entebbe before dawn for the long southwest run via Masaka, Mbarara and Kabale (approx. 8–9 hours on tarmac), or from Kigali via the Cyanika border crossing (approx. 4–5 hours). Travellers starting in Rwanda clear immigration at Cyanika, then descend through terraced hills toward Kisoro — a compact volcanic town cupped between the Virunga cones and the shores of Lake Mutanda. The Kampala route pauses at the Uganda Equator at Kayabwe for coffee and the water-drain demonstration, then climbs through Ankole cattle country before the Kabale escarpment drops you into the Kigezi highlands. Arrive at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park — Uganda’s smallest national park at 33.7 square kilometres, yet one of its most dramatic. Three dormant volcanoes dominate the skyline: Mount Muhavura (4,127 m), Mount Gahinga (3,474 m) and Mount Sabinyo (3,669 m). The park shares a border with Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in DR Congo — the same mountain gorilla population ranges across all three countries, though Mgahinga’s habituated group is tracked separately when permits are available. Tomorrow’s objective is Sabinyo: the only Virunga peak whose summit marker sits at the tri-border junction. Check in near Ntebeko park headquarters or in Kisoro town itself. Mount Gahinga Lodge sits on community farmland below the volcanoes with views across to Sabinyo’s serrated ridge; Kisoro Travelers Rest Hotel is a classic mountaineers’ stop with photographs of Dian Fossey-era expeditions on the walls; Amajambere Iwacu Community Camp offers budget bandas on the park boundary. Your guide briefs you on tomorrow’s climb — fitness expectations, what to pack, and porter hire through the local association (strongly recommended for the ladder sections). Sabinyo means “old man’s teeth” in the local Rufumbira dialect — an apt name for the jagged summit pyramid you will see from your lodge terrace at sunset. Sleep at roughly 2,000 m tonight to begin acclimatising before trek day. The upper trail is cold and exposed even on the equator; lay out waterproof layers, gloves and a warm hat before an early night. Dinner overlooking the volcanic cones — on clear evenings the lights of Goma, DR Congo flicker across Lake Mutanda to the west. Drive time: Approx. 8–9 hours from Kampala or Entebbe; 4–5 hours from Kigali via Cyanika border Meals: Lunch & dinner Accommodation: Kisoro or Ntebeko lodge

Mount Sabinyo volcano hike — tri-border summit

Pre-dawn tea at the lodge, then transfer to Ntebeko Visitor Centre for briefing with Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. Sabinyo hiking permits are date-specific and limited — your booking locks the morning departure slot. Porters assemble at the trailhead; they know every ladder and rope section on the upper ridge and will carry your daypack so you can use both hands on the technical pitches. The trail begins in farmland and montane forest, then enters dense bamboo zone where golden monkeys sometimes chatter overhead and buffalo spoor appears in muddy wallows — Mgahinga’s forest buffalo are shy but present on the lower slopes. The path steepens through Hagenia forest and Afro-alpine moorland studded with giant lobelia and senecio. Sabinyo has three distinct peaks along the ridge; the route ascends Peak One and Peak Two before the final push to the summit pyramid. The upper section is what makes Sabinyo unique among Ugandan day hikes: a series of wooden ladders and fixed rope assists traverse exposed volcanic rock on the “Old Man’s Teeth” — not technical mountaineering, but genuinely hands-on by East African trekking standards. Rangers set the pace and manage spacing on the ladders; vertigo sufferers should consider Muhabura or Gahinga instead.

Safari activity | Mount Sabinyo volcano hike

Full-day climb to 3,669 m and the Uganda–Rwanda–DR Congo tri-border marker — 7–9 hours round trip through bamboo forest, ladder sections and exposed volcanic ridges on the Old Man’s Teeth summit pyramid.
At the summit you stand in three countries simultaneously — the only place in the Virunga chain where a single marker defines Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo. On clear mornings the view opens across the entire volcanic range: Muhavura and Gahinga to the east, the Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira cones toward Goma, and Lake Bunyonyi glittering in its terraced amphitheatre to the north. Cloud can close in within minutes on the exposed ridge — summit photos are best taken immediately on arrival before mist swallows the tri-border post. Descent retraces the ladders and forest switchbacks; knees take more punishment going down than climbing up. Expect to reach the trailhead by mid- to late afternoon (total 7–9 hours round trip depending on fitness and weather). Return to the lodge for hot showers, dinner and an early night — legs will feel the altitude and the ladder work tomorrow morning regardless of how fit you arrived. Pack a substantial lunch, 2–3 litres of water, waterproof jacket, gloves, warm hat and trekking poles for the descent scree. The upper ridge is wind-exposed and chill is real at 3,669 m despite equatorial latitude. Dry seasons (June–September and December–February) give the best summit views, but rain gear is non-negotiable year-round. Trek duration: Approx. 7–9 hours round trip Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch & dinner Accommodation: Kisoro or Ntebeko lodge

Golden monkey trek or Kisoro leisure — departure

Optional morning golden monkey tracking in Mgahinga (separate permit through UWA or your lodge) — the species is endemic to the Albertine Rift and often found in bamboo thickets within minutes of Ntebeko. The trek is gentler than yesterday’s summit push: typically 1–2 hours on contact with a habituated troop of striking orange-coated primates leaping through bamboo stems. Alternatively, sleep in after Sabinyo and take a leisurely breakfast before the return drive. Kisoro town rewards a short stroll if your departure is after lunch — Main Street looks straight up at Sabinyo’s serrated ridge, and local coffee shops serve robust Ugandan arabica. Lake Mutanda boat trips to Python Island or community walks through Echuya Forest can fill a relaxed morning if you are not tracking golden monkeys. Your guide routes the return via Kabale and Mbarara to Kampala or Entebbe (approx. 8–9 hours), or back through Cyanika to Kigali (approx. 4–5 hours).

Safari activity | Golden monkey tracking (optional)

Morning primate trek in Mgahinga’s bamboo forest — endemic golden monkeys are a lighter Virunga add-on after yesterday’s Sabinyo summit.
Three days, one volcano, three countries at the summit — Sabinyo is the most distinctive day hike in southwestern Uganda and pairs naturally with gorilla trekking in Mgahinga or Bwindi on a longer Albertine Rift itinerary. Entebbe airport drop-off or Kigali hotel transfer can be arranged for evening international flights; allow adequate buffer after a full drive day from Kisoro. Drive time: Approx. 8–9 hours to Kampala or Entebbe; 4–5 hours to Kigali Activity duration: Approx. 1–2 hours if golden monkey tracking Meals: Breakfast & lunch
