Overview of Mahale Mountains National Park
Mahale Mountains National Park protects approximately 1,613 square kilometres on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. Established in 1985 and managed by TANAPA, the park hosts an estimated 800–1,000 chimpanzees including the habituated Mimikere (M-group) studied since the 1960s by Kyoto University researchers.
No roads enter the park — access is by charter flight or boat from Kigoma. Greystoke Mahale anchors luxury lakeshore tourism. Mahale pairs with Gombe Stream National Park, Serengeti National Park, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in comprehensive East Africa itineraries.
