4 Days Okavango Canoe (Mokoro) Safari (Botswana)
Botswana · Quiet water channels
Tour overview
This intimate 4-day Okavango mokoro safari trades engine noise for the quiet glide of a traditional dugout canoe through the channels of the Okavango Delta — UNESCO’s 1000th World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s last great inland wetlands. Your poler guides you through papyrus-lined waterways where red lechwe splash through shallows, sitatunga hide in reed beds and African fish eagles call from dead trees.
Most programmes fly from Maun to a delta camp airstrip (approx. 25–45 minutes), though road-and-mokoro transfers from Maun are possible on budget itineraries. You spend two full days on water and on foot in a private concession where walking safaris and night drives are permitted — activities rarely allowed in Botswana’s public parks.

Day-by-day itinerary
Maun to Okavango Delta camp — afternoon mokoro
Morning meet in Maun — Botswana's safari gateway on the Thamalakane River. After a short briefing, board a light aircraft transfer (or scenic road transfer with mokoro pole-in) to your delta camp on a seasonal island or permanent floodplain channel. The flight reveals the Okavango fan spreading across the Kalahari — a green labyrinth of channels, lagoons and palm islands visible from above.
Camp staff welcome you with cold towels and a briefing on mokoro safety and delta wildlife. Most camps are en-suite tented with raised decks over the water; Oddballs Enclave and Delta Camp offer authentic pole-and-canvas simplicity, while Sanctuary Baines' Camp and Wilderness Jao deliver luxury without losing the wilderness feel.
Safari activity | Okavango mokoro excursion
Your poler poles through narrow lily channels while you scan for painted reed frogs, malachite kingfishers and hippo ears below the surface — the classic Okavango introduction.
Afternoon mokoro excursion: sundowners on the floodplain as elephant herds move to drink. The delta's annual pulse — floodwaters from Angola arriving months after local rains — shapes every channel and island.
Flight: Maun–delta airstrip approx. 25–45 min (if fly-in)
Meals: Lunch & dinner
Accommodation: Okavango tented camp (full board)
Full day mokoro and walking safari
Dawn mokoro through misty channels — peak hour for birds and shy antelope. Wattled cranes, African pygmy geese and long-toed lapwings work the shallows; hippos grunt from deeper pools. The silence of mokoro travel — no engine, only the dip of the pole — is what distinguishes Okavango from every other safari destination.
Return for brunch, then a guided bush walk on the island with an armed ranger: track giraffe, zebra, warthog and buffalo at ground level; learn to read spoor and dung beetles. Your ranger explains how termite mounds become lookout posts for mongoose and how lechwe hooves are adapted for life in soft floodplain mud.
Safari activity | Guided bush walk with armed ranger
Track giraffe, zebra and buffalo at eye level on a delta island — walking safaris permitted only in private concessions, not in public parks.
Late-afternoon mokoro or motorboat to a hippo pool. Optional night drive (concession permitting) for genet, civet, porcupine and occasional leopard.
Delta camp
Okavango game viewing — channels and floodplains
Full day exploring deeper channels and open floodplains by mokoro and 4×4. Water levels peak roughly May–August; shoulder months still offer excellent birding and resident game. Wild dog, lion and leopard follow lechwe herds through the Okavango Delta. African fish eagles strike from dead trees; saddle-billed storks and malachite kingfishers patrol the channel edges.
Picnic lunch on an island or return to camp. Afternoon motorboat to a hippo pool or heronry — breeding colonies of yellow-billed storks and marabou storks are spectacular in the green season. Evening storytelling with your guide about the Okavango's annual pulse — floodwaters from Angola's Cubango River arriving months after local rains end, one of the planet's most extraordinary wetland systems.
Delta camp
Morning activity — return to Maun
Final sunrise mokoro or short game drive — last chance for close antelope encounters and bird photography in the soft dawn light. Return to camp for breakfast, then charter flight (or road transfer) back to Maun for onward connections to Kasane, Victoria Falls or Johannesburg.
Maun's airport handles daily links to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Gaborone. Many guests extend with a Chobe river safari (1-hour flight north) or Victoria Falls day trip before flying home.
