6 Days Okavango Fly-In Luxury Safari (Botswana)
Botswana · Camps by charter
Tour overview
Botswana pioneered low-volume, high-value tourism — and this 6-day Okavango fly-in luxury safari is the classic expression of that model. You skip long corrugated roads and hop between exclusive concessions by light aircraft, staying at premier camps where private guides, gourmet dining and off-road driving come standard.
The itinerary typically pairs a water camp (mokoro and motorboat) with a land camp (4×4 drives and walking) inside the Okavango Delta or adjacent Moremi Game Reserve. Wildlife highlights include elephant, lion, leopard, wild dog, hippos in the channels and 400+ bird species. Peak flood season is roughly June–August.

Day-by-day itinerary
Maun — fly to Okavango water camp
Meet at Maun airport or your lodge for a scenic charter over the Okavango fan — elephant trails visible from the air, hippos in lagoons, red lechwe on floodplains. The flight reveals the delta's extraordinary geography — a green labyrinth spreading across the Kalahari, fed by floodwaters from Angola's highlands months after local rains end.
Touch down at your first camp airstrip (Jao, Vumbura, Mombo area or similar). Camp staff welcome you with cold towels and a safety briefing before your first water activity.
Safari activity | Scenic charter over the Okavango
Light aircraft transfer from Maun — elephant trails, hippo lagoons and the full fan of the delta visible from above before landing at your water camp airstrip.
Camp welcome and lunch, then afternoon mokoro or motorboat safari through lily channels. Sundowners as fish eagles call and herds move to the water.
Flight: Maun–camp approx. 25–50 min
Meals: Lunch & dinner
Accommodation: Okavango water camp (luxury tented)
Okavango water activities
Full day on the delta: dawn mokoro through misty channels, brunch at camp, afternoon boat to a heronry or hippo pool. Wattled cranes, African jacana and pygmy geese work the lily pads; hippos grunt from deeper pools. The silence of mokoro travel — no engine, only the dip of the pole — defines the Okavango experience.
Red lechwe splash through the shallows while African fish eagles call from dead trees along the channel. Camp guides coordinate mokoro, boat and drive times around the Okavango flood pulse and overnight predator reports from neighbouring concessions.
Elephant herds move to the water each afternoon along the Chobe riverfront — your guide positions the vehicle or boat for the best sight lines across the Sedudu Valley and Serondela terrace.
Moremi's mopane woodland and floodplain edges hold lion, leopard and wild dog; off-road driving on private concessions allows close predator sightings that public parks cannot offer.
Walking safari on a nearby island with armed ranger — buffalo, giraffe and zebra at eye level. Your ranger explains how lechwe hooves are adapted for soft floodplain mud and how fish eagles hunt from dead trees. Evening fireside briefing on tomorrow's camp transfer. Optional spa treatment or in-room star bed at Sanctuary Vumbura or Wilderness Jao.
Water camp
Fly to Okavango / Moremi land camp
Morning mokoro or short game drive, then inter-camp charter (15–30 minutes) to a second concession focused on 4×4 game drives. The landscape shifts from open water channels to mopane woodland and floodplain — a different habitat palette with different species priorities.
Afternoon drive seeking lion prides, leopard in riverine forest and African wild dog if packs are active. Wilderness Mombo, Sanctuary Chief's Camp and Great Plains Duba Explorers define the luxury land-camp experience.
Safari activity | Moremi predator game drive
Afternoon 4×4 on private concession — off-road permitted for quality sightings of lion, leopard and wild dog on the floodplain edges.
Flight: Inter-camp approx. 15–30 min
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Accommodation: Land-based luxury camp (e.g. Chiefs Camp, Mombo, DumaTau corridor)
Full day game drives and night drive
Dawn drive on private concession — off-road permitted for quality sightings. Lion prides follow buffalo herds through mopane woodland; leopard hunt in riverine forest along the channel. Midday rest during heat with lunch at camp.
Afternoon drive to lagoon edges for elephant bathing and saddle-billed storks. Night drive after dinner for nocturnal species: serval, civet, spring hare, porcupine and hunting lions. Mombo and Chief's Camp corridors are among Africa's richest predator habitats.
Land camp
Moremi / Okavango exploration
Your guide tailors the day to recent sightings — perhaps Chief's Island grasslands for cheetah, lagoon edges for elephant bathing, or a long walk following wild dog. Wild dog packs hunt lechwe through the channels; Duba Plains is famous for lion hunting buffalo in the water.
Bush brunch on the vehicle or picnic under a sausage tree. Final night celebration with camp staff — Botswana's guiding culture is among Africa's finest. House wines and spirits at most luxury camps; laundry included at Wilderness and Sanctuary properties.
Land camp
Morning drive — fly to Maun

Maun handles daily connections across southern Africa. Many guests combine this fly-in safari with a Chobe river extension (1-hour flight north) or Victoria Falls before flying home.
