Acclimatisation day at Bujuku. Optional hike toward Elena Hut (4,541 m) for glacier and Stanley Plateau views — weather dependent and not a summit attempt. The extra elevation helps prepare your body for the descent ahead.
Rest, hydrate and prepare for the descent. Fit hikers only; travel insurance with altitude cover is essential. RMS guides monitor trekkers for signs of altitude sickness throughout the circuit.
Trek duration: 3–5 hours if hiking; rest day alternative
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Accommodation: Bujuku Hut
Safari activity | Elena Hut acclimatisation hike
Optional excursion toward Elena Hut for glacier views of Mount Stanley — weather dependent. Margherita Peak summit attempts require 2–3 additional days beyond this nine-day introduction.Bujuku to John Matte Hut
Begin the descent from Bujuku Valley, retracing through Lower Bigo Bog back to John Matte Hut (approx. 5–6 hours). The boardwalk sections that seemed arduous on the ascent feel like a relief on the way down — though knees take more strain than lungs.
Afternoon rest at John Matte with views of Mount Baker and the heather zone opening below. RMS cooks prepare hot meals; hydrate well and air boots if they are wet from the bog.
Trekking poles are strongly recommended for the Rwenzori — the trails are steep, muddy and uneven throughout the Central Circuit.
Trek duration: 5–6 hours
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Accommodation: John Matte Hut
John Matte to Nyabitaba Hut
Continue descent through giant heather and bamboo zones to Nyabitaba Hut (approx. 6–7 hours). The rainforest feels warmer and richer after days in the afro-alpine zone — turacos call from the canopy and the Mubuku River grows louder as you drop elevation.
Cross the Kurt Shafer Bridge again in reverse, climbing briefly before the final descent to Nyabitaba. Porters often sing on this section — a tradition on the Rwenzori trails.
Final night on the mountain before tomorrow’s exit to the park gate. Pack gear ready for an early start.
Trek duration: 6–7 hours
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Accommodation: Nyabitaba Hut

Breakfast in Kasese, then return drive to Entebbe (approx. 7–8 hours) via Fort Portal and Mubende. The route crosses tea plantations at the Albertine Rift escarpment — a gentle re-entry to lowland Uganda after six nights in mountain huts.
Alternatively, add a Queen Elizabeth game-drive day (extend itinerary) — QE is only 1–2 hours from Kasese and pairs naturally with a post-trek wildlife wind-down among Kasenyi lions and Kazinga hippos.
Airport drop-off for evening flights, or overnight in Entebbe on request. Personal hiking gear and sleeping bag rental are not included; tips for RMS guides and porters are customary. Margherita Peak summit attempts require 2–3 additional days beyond this nine-day introduction.
