Trekking activity | Rwenzori central circuit — Nyabitaba ascent

First day on the Mountains of the Moon — rainforest trail to Nyabitaba Hut at 2,651 m with RMS guides and porters carrying camp gear.
Overnight in basic mountain hut. Trails are muddy year-round — gaiters and waterproof boots essential. RMS porters carry up to 25 kg per person — pack a daypack with rain gear, snacks and water. Hut mattresses are basic; bring a sleeping bag rated to -5 °C. Trek duration: 5–6 hours Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner Accommodation: Nyabitaba Hut

Nyabitaba to John Matte Hut (3,505 m)

Ascend through bamboo and giant heather zones, crossing the Kurt Shafer Bridge over the Mubuku River. Reach John Matte Hut (approx. 7–8 hours) with views of Mount Stanley's peaks on clear days. Giant lobelias and groundsels begin appearing in the Afro-alpine zone. Overnight in mountain hut — altitude acclimatisation important. John Matte Hut sits at the edge of Lower Bigo Bog — boardwalk sections cross the wettest ground. Giant heather (Philippia benguelensis) dominates the zone between 3,000 and 3,800 metres. Trek duration: 7–8 hours Meals: Full board Accommodation: John Matte Hut

John Matte — Bujuku Valley excursion or rest

Depending on fitness, a day hike toward Bujuku Valley (3,962 m) for glacier views of Mount Stanley and Mount Baker, or a rest day at John Matte for acclimatisation. Giant heather and lobelia landscapes are unlike anywhere else in East Africa.

Trekking activity | Bujuku Valley glacier viewpoint

Optional ascent toward Bujuku Valley for views of Mount Stanley's glaciers and Margherita Peak (5,109 m) — weather dependent, no summit attempt on this 5-day route.
Return to John Matte Hut for overnight. Bujuku Valley views include Mount Stanley (5,109 m) and Mount Speke (4,890 m) on clear mornings. Margherita Peak summit attempts require an additional 2–3 days and alpine equipment beyond this 5-day route. Trek duration: 5–7 hours if hiking; rest day alternative Meals: Full board Accommodation: John Matte Hut

Descent to Nyakalengija — return to Entebbe

Descend through heather and rainforest to the trailhead (approx. 6–7 hours). Certificate at park gate, then drive to Entebbe (approx. 7–8 hours) or overnight in Kasese if preferred after a long day. RMS guides and porters receive tips at trail exit. Wet-weather gear and fitness are essential — this is a hiking itinerary, not a vehicle safari.
