Day-by-day itinerary
Kampala or Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your driver-guide collects you from Kampala or Entebbe before dawn — typically between 5:00 and 6:00 am — for the long southwest run toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Day 1 is a full transfer day; tomorrow is gorilla trekking, and Day 3 is recovery on Lake Bunyonyi — Uganda's most popular post-trek pairing. Pack snacks, a neck pillow and a charged power bank; the vehicle is comfortable, but the hours add up.
The route follows the Kampala–Masaka–Mbarara highway through Ankole cattle country — long-horned herds beside tarmac, banana plantations and roadside stalls selling roasted gonja (plantain) and fresh pineapple. Pause at the Uganda Equator at Kayabwe for the classic water-drain demonstration and coffee. Lunch in Mbarara — grilled goat, matoke and groundnut sauce are local staples — before the road climbs toward the Kigezi highlands through Kabale, the "Switzerland of Africa" with terraced hillsides and cool mountain air.
Beyond Kabale the landscape tightens into steep valleys and volcanic ridges. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park protects roughly 331 square kilometres of montane and lowland forest between 1,160 and 2,607 metres — one of Africa's oldest ecosystems, harbouring roughly 459 mountain gorillas (just under half the global population). Your permit allocation determines which sector you trek tomorrow: Buhoma (northwest, the original tourism gate), Ruhija (high-altitude bamboo ridges), Rushaga (southern multi-group sector) or Nkuringo (dramatic ridge-top trails with Virunga views). Your guide matches lodge location to sector so tomorrow's briefing transfer stays under an hour.
Arrive at your Bwindi sector lodge by late afternoon or early evening. Check in, freshen up and take in the forest edge — mist often settles in the valleys below, and the calls of black-and-white colobus or cinnamon-chested bee-eaters may be your first forest soundtrack. Your guide confirms tomorrow's UWA briefing time (typically 7:00–7:30 am at sector headquarters) and reviews the packing list: waterproof hiking boots with ankle support, gaiters for muddy trails, gardening gloves for gripping vines and stinging nettles, long trousers and sleeves, light rain jacket, neutral-coloured clothing, and a daypack under 8 kg. Dinner at the lodge and an early night — gorilla day starts before sunrise.
Fly-in alternative: Scheduled flights from Entebbe to Kihihi or Kisoro (approx. 1 hour 15 minutes) skip most of today's road day. Aerolink and Bar Aviation operate regular services; a private 4×4 meets you at the airstrip for the 1–2 hour transfer to your sector lodge. Ask us to quote a fly-in version if you want to compress Day 1 without sacrificing the trek or Bunyonyi recovery day.

Mountain gorilla trekking & transfer to Lake Bunyonyi
Pre-dawn tea or coffee at the lodge, then transfer to your sector's UWA park headquarters for the mandatory ranger briefing. UWA staff explain trekking protocols: maintain at least 7 metres from gorillas, no flash photography, voices low, no eating or drinking near the animals, and a maximum one hour with the habituated family once contact is made. Your assigned gorilla group is confirmed here — Bwindi holds more than 20 habituated families across four sectors, each monitored daily by tracker teams who radio ahead from the forest. Porters can be hired at the briefing point (typically USD 15–20, paid locally); they carry your daypack and steady you on steep, root-choked trails — strongly recommended on Nkuringo, Ruhija and Rushaga routes.
With UWA rangers and advance trackers, you enter the montane forest on foot for your mountain gorilla trek. The name "Impenetrable" is not marketing — trails climb and descend through dense Hagenia woodland, bamboo zones and nettle-fringed paths between 2,200 and 2,600 metres. Trekking duration is commonly 2–8 hours round trip depending on where your assigned family nested the previous night. Trackers read broken vegetation, fresh dung, nest sites and vocalisations; you follow at a steady pace with rest stops on steep sections. Along the approach you may notice L'Hoest's monkey, black-and-white colobus, colourful sunbirds and the giant lobelia that characterise Bwindi's Afro-montane habitat.
When trackers locate your group, you leave larger packs with porters and approach quietly. The hour on contact passes quickly — a dominant silverback may glance your way or beat his chest; juveniles tumble through branches overhead; mothers nurse infants at arm's length. No two visits are identical, but the proximity is extraordinary. After the regulated hour, hike back to headquarters, receive your gorilla trekking certificate, and collect any stored gear. Gorilla permits are issued by UWA — see our current permit guide for tariff cycles.
Afternoon transfer to Lake Bunyonyi (approx. 1–2 hours from most Bwindi sectors via Kabale). The road drops from the forest ridge into the Rift Valley with sweeping views across terraced Bakiga farmland. Lake Bunyonyi sits at roughly 1,962 metres — Uganda's deepest lake at up to 44 metres, dotted with 29 islands and ringed by steep hills. Its high altitude means no malaria-risk mosquitoes, which is why it has been the classic post-gorilla decompression stop for decades. Dugout canoes pole between islands at dusk; kingfishers and weaver colonies work the reed edges.
Check in at your lakeside lodge — Birdnest @ Bunyonyi Resort and Arcadia Cottages are the classic choices, both with lake-facing decks for post-trek recovery. Sunset over the water from your cottage; dinner with the lake below and the forested islands silhouetted against the sky. Tomorrow is a gentle canoe morning before the long drive back or a short hop to Kigali.
