How to get to Mafia Island
Mafia Island sits in the Mafia Archipelago off Tanzania's southern coast, roughly 120 kilometres south of Zanzibar. There is no road bridge or reliable commercial ferry — access is almost exclusively by air to Kilindoni Airstrip on the island's northwest shore, where the main harbour town and whale-shark boat departures are located.
Flights from Dar es Salaam
Dar es Salaam (DAR) is Tanzania's commercial capital and the most common gateway for Mafia. Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, and regional carriers operate scheduled light aircraft to Kilindoni — typically 30 minutes flight time. Multiple daily departures run in peak season; morning flights suit same-day Utende lodge transfers.
International travelers often arrive DAR after mainland safari or connect from Julius Nyerere International Airport on the same day with careful scheduling. Baggage weight limits on small aircraft are strict — pack soft bags.
Flights from Zanzibar
After Stone Town culture or beach time on Zanzibar, short flights from Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) to Kilindoni take roughly 45 minutes. This is the standard routing for Spice Islands split itineraries — two to three Zanzibar nights, then south to Mafia for diving and whale sharks.
Flight schedules are less frequent than ZNZ–DAR routes — confirm availability before locking lodge dates on both islands.
From the Serengeti and Northern Circuit
After Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, or Mount Kilimanjaro adventures, most travelers fly from bush airstrips or Arusha to Dar es Salaam, then connect to Kilindoni the same day or following morning. Coastal Aviation and Auric Air link Serengeti strips, Ngorongoro, and southern parks through DAR on multi-leg tickets.
Fly-in safari guests sometimes overnight in Dar es Salaam before the Mafia leg when same-day connections are tight. Alternatively, route via Zanzibar for a Stone Town buffer night before the southbound Mafia flight.
From southern Tanzania parks
Nyerere (Selous) and Ruaha safari travelers often fly via Dar es Salaam to Kilindoni — logical routing for southern-wildlife-then-reef itineraries without backtracking to the Northern Circuit.
Boat access — adventurous only
Unlike Zanzibar, there is no commercial passenger ferry to Mafia. Traditional dhow crossings from Nyamisati on the mainland take 4–6 hours and are unpredictable — not recommended for standard tourism. Flying remains the practical choice.
On-island transfers
Kilindoni hosts the airstrip and harbour. Most Utende lodges on Chole Bay include airport transfers — roughly 30 minutes by dalla-dalla or lodge vehicle. North-coast properties near Bweni require longer road transfers (up to four to five hours). Confirm your lodge location before booking flights.
Dive operators at Utende arrange boat trips into Chole Bay and to Chole Island — walking distance from most marine-park lodges.
Combining with onward destinations
Most Mafia visitors depart via Kilindoni to Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar for international flights. Some continue to Pemba Island on broader Spice Islands dive itineraries (routing via Zanzibar). Return to the mainland for Northern Circuit extensions or cross-border Kenya routes via Nairobi.
