Best time to visit Mafia Island
Unlike mainland parks where migration months lock calendars, Mafia Island is flexible for reef activities throughout the year. The real planning questions are practical: Are you targeting whale sharks? Will seas be calm for Kinasi Pass drift dives? And are you slotting Mafia immediately after Serengeti National Park or routing via Zanzibar?
Whale shark season
The defining seasonal window is October through February, when whale sharks feed on plankton upwellings west of Mafia — often within minutes of Kilindoni harbour. November and December frequently deliver the highest encounter rates, though sharks can appear from late September into March depending on water conditions.
If whale sharks are your primary goal, build date flexibility into your itinerary and book licensed operators early for peak holiday weeks.
Dry season vs rainy season
Tanzania's broadly drier windows — roughly June to October and December to February — often suit Mafia best for calmer seas, reliable beach weather, and comfortable Chole Bay diving. Diving visibility frequently peaks in these periods.
Rainier periods centered on March to May and November bring heavier showers and occasionally rougher seas. Lodges offer attractive rates; Chole Bay diving continues with operator flexibility on site selection. June and July can be windy, affecting outside wall dives north of the bay.
Post-safari timing
Many travelers schedule Mafia for the week after mainland adventure — when sore muscles welcome warm water and reef snorkeling. Dry-season safari months (June–October, December–February) align with the most comfortable coast weather and overlap with whale-shark season from October onward.
If your Serengeti dates fall in a wet week, Mafia still works as recovery — choose lodges with good indoor common spaces and flexible dive scheduling.
Diving seasons beyond whale sharks
Scuba diving in Chole Bay operates year-round. Sheltered bay sites suit all months; "outside" dives north of Chole Bay are typically available October–February when wind and current allow. Beginners should prioritize drier months for the calmest surface conditions at Maweni and coral gardens.
Comparing Mafia with Zanzibar timing
Travelers splitting time between Stone Town and Mafia should note Mafia has fewer daily flights — coordinate Zanzibar beach nights with available Kilindoni connections rather than assuming daily departures like ZNZ–DAR schedules.
Month-by-month snapshot
January–February: Hot, often dry, excellent diving; whale sharks present; peak demand.
March–May: Long rains possible; greener landscapes, fewer crowds, good lodge value; whale sharks tail off.
June–July: Cooler, drier, but can be windy — outside dives limited; bay diving continues.
August–September: Drying conditions improve; whale sharks may appear from late September.
October–December: Whale shark peak; strong diving; popular safari-and-reef combinations.
Combining weather with mainland safaris
If Mafia follows Serengeti or Ngorongoro, remember highland and savannah microclimates differ from the coast. Build one flexible weather buffer day rather than stacking fixed-time whale-shark activities back-to-back.
How long to stay
Four nights is a minimum for divers; five to seven nights allow whale-shark days, multiple Chole Bay dives, and a Chole Island excursion. See how to get to Mafia Island for flight planning from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.
