How to Get to Maasai Mara National Reserve
Reaching Maasai Mara National Reserve is one of the easier logistics exercises in East African safari travel. Nairobi serves as the primary gateway, with road and air options suited to different budgets, timelines, and itinerary styles.
By Road from Nairobi
Road transfers take approximately five to six hours (roughly 270 km) via Narok, depending on gate destination and traffic. Common entry gates include:
- Sekenani Gate — eastern and central Mara access
- Talek Gate — central plains and Talek River area
- Oloololo Gate — Mara Triangle and western sector
- Musiara Gate — northern river corridor
Most safari packages include private 4×4 vehicles with experienced driver-guides. The route descends into the Great Rift Valley with scenic stops possible en route. Self-drive is possible for experienced Africa travellers but guided safaris remain standard for international visitors.
By Air from Nairobi
Scheduled and charter flights operate from Wilson Airport (Nairobi) to multiple Mara airstrips, including Keekorok, Mara Serena, Ol Kiombo, Musiara, and conservancy strips. Flight time is typically 45–60 minutes. Fly-in safaris suit travellers with limited time or those combining multiple parks by air on Kenya circuits.
From Tanzania (Serengeti)
Overland safaris can connect Tanzania's Serengeti National Park with the Mara via the Isibania/Sirari border for multi-country migration itineraries. Plan visas, border hours, and vehicle documentation in advance.
Park Fees & Conservancy Charges
Main reserve entry fees are collected at gates. Mara Triangle, conservancy, and camping fees apply separately depending on itinerary. Licensed operators usually include and prepay fees; independent travellers should confirm current Narok County schedules. Kenya's national park system under Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) differs from county-managed reserves — budget accordingly when combining Mara with KWS parks such as Amboseli National Park or Lake Nakuru National Park.
Combining with East Africa Routes
Fly from Nairobi to Entebbe (Uganda) or Kigali (Rwanda) for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Volcanoes National Park after Mara safaris — a popular savannah-and-primate combination.
