How to get to Lamu Island
Lamu Island sits in the Lamu Archipelago off Kenya's northern Indian Ocean coast. There are no roads to the island — access is by air to Manda Airport on neighbouring Manda Island, then boat across the channel to Lamu Town, Shela, or your lodge.
Flights from Nairobi Wilson Airport
The standard route for most international travelers: arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi, transfer to Wilson Airport (WIL), and board a scheduled domestic flight to Manda — typically 1.5–2 hours flight time. Several carriers operate daily departures in peak season; morning flights suit same-day Lamu Town arrival.
Baggage weight limits on small aircraft are strict — pack soft bags. Wilson check-in opens early; road transfers from Nairobi hotels need rush-hour buffers.
Manda Airport boat transfers
Manda Airport lies on Manda Island facing Lamu Town across a narrow channel. Lodge and airport boat transfers take roughly 10–30 minutes depending on destination — Lamu Town harbour, Shela Beach, or Manda Bay lodges. Pre-arrange transfers through your lodge or a licensed operator; confirm whether your property is in Lamu Town, Shela, or on Manda before booking flights.
From the Maasai Mara after safari
After Maasai Mara National Reserve safaris, most travelers return to Nairobi — by road (4–6 hours to Wilson area) or bush airstrip flight to Wilson — then fly to Manda the following day. Allow a Nairobi buffer night when connecting from Mara bush strips; same-day Mara-to-Lamu connections are rarely practical.
Fly-in safari guests sometimes overnight in Nairobi before the Lamu leg, using the city for optional Nairobi National Park morning drives or conservation-centre visits.
From Amboseli and southern Kenya parks
Amboseli National Park and Tsavo East safaris route through Nairobi before Wilson–Manda flights. Road transfers from Mombasa or Diani Beach to Lamu are long and rarely chosen — flying from Nairobi is faster and more reliable.
From Mombasa and Diani Beach
Travelers already on Kenya's southern coast sometimes fly Mombasa–Lamu on regional connections or route back through Nairobi. Diani Beach and Mombasa suit travelers wanting easier road access; Lamu suits those prioritizing Swahili heritage over resort-strip convenience.
Uganda and Rwanda combinations
Travelers finishing gorilla trekking in Bwindi or Volcanoes National Park often fly Entebbe or Kigali to Nairobi, complete a Kenya safari, then connect to Lamu — a full East Africa arc. Allow full travel days for multi-leg connections.
Getting around on Lamu Island
Lamu is car-free. Lamu Town and Shela are linked by footpath (roughly 45–60 minutes along the beach at low tide) or short boat rides. Donkeys carry goods through Old Town alleys. Dhow boats serve as water taxis between harbour, Shela, and Manda lodges.
Combining with onward destinations
Most Lamu visitors depart via Manda to Nairobi for international flights. Some continue to Diani Beach, Watamu, or cross to Zanzibar on broader Indian Ocean itineraries. Return to Nairobi for Lake Nakuru or Laikipia conservancy extensions.
