5 Days Nyiragongo Hike & Gorillas

DR Congo · Extended Virunga experience

Tour overview

The signature Virunga combo: mountain gorilla trekking on Mikeno's slopes and an overnight Nyiragongo lava-lake hike — two of Africa's most intense wildlife and adventure experiences in one Virunga National Park circuit from Kigali.

Gorilla permits (~USD 450) and Nyiragongo permits (~USD 300) must be secured well ahead. Fitness matters: gorilla day plus volcano ascent within 48 hours is demanding. We sequence gorilla first, recovery day, then Nyiragongo — or reverse depending on permit slots.

Day-by-day itinerary

Kigali to Virunga — Bukima gorilla base

Your private 4×4 and English-speaking guide collect you from Kigali or KGL airport after breakfast for the northwest run along Lake Kivu to Gisenyi (Rubavu). The paved lakeshore road passes tea estates and fishing villages before the Grande Barrière border crossing into Goma, DRC — allow 45–90 minutes for Rwanda exit and DRC entry formalities with your guide handling paperwork on both sides.

From Goma, transfer north through volcanic terrain to the Bukima sector of Virunga National Park (Africa's oldest national park, established 1925). Mikeno volcano rises above the lodge — tomorrow's gorilla trek climbs its bamboo-clad slopes where habituated mountain gorilla families have been monitored by ICCN rangers and the Virunga Foundation for decades. Check in at Mikeno Lodge or a Virunga partner property on the park edge.

Evening safety briefing with Virunga staff covers armed escort protocols, gorilla etiquette (seven-metre distance, no flash photography, one regulated hour on contact), and tomorrow's Bukima patrol post assembly time (typically 07:00). Your guide confirms gorilla permit vouchers, reviews fitness for family allocation, and arranges porters if requested. Pack tonight: waterproof hiking boots, gaiters, gardening gloves for nettles, long trousers and sleeves, neutral colours, rain jacket, energy snacks, 2–3 litres of water, camera without flash, passport and DRC visa.

Mountain gorilla trekking — Mikeno volcano slopes

Pre-dawn tea at the lodge, then transfer to Bukima patrol post for ICCN ranger briefing. Staff explain trekking protocols: maintain distance from gorillas, voices low, no eating near the animals, and a maximum one hour with the habituated family once contact is made. Virunga's mountain gorilla permits through ICCN are typically around USD 450 — the most affordable mountain gorilla trekking in the region. See our permit guide for current ICCN rates and booking windows.

With armed rangers and advance trackers, you enter Virunga National Park on foot through bamboo zones and montane forest on Mikeno volcano's flanks at roughly 2,000–2,800 m elevation. Trekking duration is commonly 1–4 hours each way — often shorter than Bwindi's steeper routes but altitude, mud and nettles still demand preparation. Trackers read broken vegetation, fresh dung and nest sites; porters (strongly recommended) carry your daypack and steady you on root-choked trails. Along the approach you may notice golden monkeys, buffalo signs and colourful sunbirds in the bamboo understory.

Safari activity | Mountain gorilla trekking in Virunga NP

Track a habituated gorilla family through bamboo forest on Mikeno volcano with ICCN rangers and armed escort — DRC's flagship gorilla trekking experience. One regulated hour with silverbacks, juveniles tumbling through bamboo, and nursing mothers at close range; certificate presentation at Bukima on return.

Gorilla trek callout: When trackers locate your group, you leave larger packs with porters and approach quietly. The hour on contact passes quickly — a dominant silverback may glance your way or beat his chest; juveniles tumble through bamboo overhead; mothers nurse infants within metres. Virunga's habituated families live in dense bamboo on Mikeno's slopes with excellent photography light in morning mist. No two visits are identical, but the proximity is extraordinary and widely regarded as one of Africa's most profound wildlife encounters. Rangers enforce the seven-metre guideline while habituated families often approach closer. Photography is permitted without flash; a rain sleeve for your camera is essential even in dry season. After the regulated hour, hike back to Bukima patrol post, receive your gorilla trekking certificate, and return to lodge for a recovery afternoon ahead of tomorrow's rest day.

Recovery day — Senkwekwe optional

A dedicated recovery day between gorilla trekking and the Nyiragongo ascent is essential on this five-day circuit — your legs need rest before the 5–7 hour volcano climb to 3,470 m. Sleep in, enjoy Mikeno Lodge's forest views toward Mikeno and the DRC–Rwanda border ridge, and let altitude and trek soreness settle.

Optional morning visit to the Senkwekwe Orphan Gorilla Centre at Rumangabo — Virunga's sanctuary for gorillas rescued from poaching and conflict, where caretakers share conservation stories behind the park's mountain gorilla protection programme. Alternatively, a guided Goma city orientation (security permitting) explores the lakeside capital rebuilt after Nyiragongo's 2002 and 2021 eruptions — lava fields, local markets and views across Lake Kivu to the Rwandan shore.

Afternoon gear check for Nyiragongo: hire sleeping bag and mattress locally if needed, confirm warm layers (summit night drops below freezing), headtorch with spare batteries, garden gloves for rope-assisted sections, and a small daypack for the ascent. Your guide reconfirms tomorrow's Kibati trailhead transfer and Nyiragongo permit (~USD 300 through ICCN/Virunga). Early dinner and early bed — the volcano day starts with a substantial climb.

Mount Nyiragongo overnight trek — lava lake summit

Morning transfer from Bukima to Kibati patrol post, Nyiragongo's trailhead roughly 30–45 minutes from Goma. Mandatory equipment check with Virunga rangers — sleeping bag, rain gear, headtorch, warm layers. Porters and the summit cook team are arranged (mandatory fees apply); you carry only a daypack with water, snacks and camera gear.

10:00 briefing with armed Virunga rangers, then steady ascent through montane forest, old lava fields and volcanic scree. Pace is regulated for altitude — the trail gains roughly 1,500 m over 5–7 hours to the summit shelters at 3,470 m. Bamboo gives way to stark lava landscapes as Mikeno and the Rwandan Virunga chain frame the horizon. Summit arrival is timed before dusk for the defining moment: the world's largest active lava lake glowing in the crater below.

Safari activity | Mount Nyiragongo overnight lava-lake hike

Ascend to summit shelters overlooking the world's largest active lava lake on Mount Nyiragongo — sunset and night photography of the glowing crater. One of only a handful of persistent lava lakes on Earth; fitness required, porters recommended.

Nyiragongo callout: As darkness falls, the crater rim becomes one of Africa's most dramatic natural theatres — molten lava churns and fountains in the caldera below, casting orange light against the night sky and illuminating the volcanic gases that rise from the lake surface. The 2021 eruption reshaped Goma's southern neighbourhoods; standing on the summit you understand why Nyiragongo is among the world's most active and closely monitored volcanoes. Summit shelters are basic shared bunks (cold night — thermal layers essential); the cook team serves hot dinner on the crater rim. Long-exposure photography rewards patience; a tripod and wide-angle lens capture the lava lake's scale. Visibility is weather-dependent — mist can roll in quickly, but even partial views are unforgettable. This is adventure trekking, not luxury hospitality — the reward is geological spectacle unmatched anywhere else on the continent.

Nyiragongo descent & return to Kigali

Pre-dawn optional crater viewing if weather clears — the lava lake often appears most vivid in the blue hour before sunrise. After breakfast prepared by the summit cook team, begin the 3–4 hour descent through lava fields and montane forest back to Kibati patrol post. The descent is steep and dusty; walking poles and knee care help after the summit night. Collect any stored gear, tip porters and cook team, then transfer to Goma.

Cross the Grande Barrière back into Rwanda at Gisenyi with your guide handling exit formalities. Continue along Lake Kivu to Kigali (approx. 3–4 hours from border) through terraced highlands and tea country. Airport drop-off at KGL can be arranged for evening international departures — allow adequate buffer after the descent and border crossing.

Five days in the Virunga corridor delivers Africa's signature primate-and-volcano double: affordable mountain gorillas on Mikeno, a dedicated recovery day, and an overnight on the rim of the world's most dramatic active lava lake — two bucket-list experiences in one compact DRC circuit from Kigali.
