4 Days Nyiragongo & Gorilla Trek

DR Congo · Lava lake & gorillas

Tour overview

A compressed 4-day Virunga gorilla and Nyiragongo itinerary for fit travellers with aligned permit dates. Combines one mountain gorilla trek at Bukima with the overnight Nyiragongo lava-lake hike — minimal buffer days, maximum volcano-and-primate impact in Virunga National Park, Africa's oldest protected area (est. 1925).

Ideal when both ICCN permits are confirmed on consecutive days. Virunga gorilla permits are typically around USD 450 and Nyiragongo permits around USD 300 — combined roughly USD 750 before logistics. Starting from Kigali keeps the Gisenyi–Goma border corridor simple; DRC visa required in advance. Monitor North Kivu security advisories — we book only when Virunga tourism is officially open. Day-by-day itinerary

Kigali to Virunga — Bukima corridor & border briefing

Your driver-guide collects you from Kigali city centre or KGL airport after breakfast for the northwest run along Lake Kivu toward Gisenyi (Rubavu) — Rwanda's lakeside border town facing Goma across the water (approx. 3–4 hours total including border formalities). The paved RN4 corridor is one of the most practical routes into DRC's Virunga National Park, shared with Rwanda's Volcanoes and Uganda's Mgahinga on the same volcanic massif.

Cross the Grande Barrière at Gisenyi–Goma with Virunga Foundation border assistance — passport, DRC tourist visa, yellow fever card and permit vouchers checked before transfer to the Bukima sector on Mikeno volcano's forested slopes. Virunga protects roughly 7,800 km² of montane forest, lava plains and crater lakes; the Bukima patrol post is the gateway to habituated mountain gorilla families that Dian Fossey's legacy helped safeguard on the DRC side of the Virungas.

Check in at Mikeno Lodge or an equivalent Virunga Foundation partner property near Bukima — forest-edge accommodation with views toward Mikeno (4,437 m) and, on clear evenings, the smoke plume above Mount Nyiragongo to the north. Afternoon safety briefing from Virunga staff covers armed escort protocols, gorilla trekking rules (7-metre distance, one hour on contact, no flash photography) and tomorrow's Nyiragongo gear requirements. Hire sleeping bag and mattress locally tonight if needed — summit shelters are basic and nights at 3,470 m are cold even in dry season.

Your guide confirms both ICCN permit allocations — gorilla (approx. USD 450) and Nyiragongo (approx. USD 300) — and reviews the compressed schedule: gorilla trek tomorrow morning, Nyiragongo ascent the following day with no full recovery day between. This 4-day window demands reasonable fitness; porters are strongly recommended on both activities. Early dinner and bed — Bukima gorilla briefing is typically around 07:00.

Options based on your package

  • Luxury: Mikeno Lodge (Virunga Foundation flagship)
  • Mid-range: Virunga partner tented camps near Bukima
  • Budget: Goma lakeside lodges with early-morning transfer to Bukima (security permitting)

Mountain gorilla trekking on Mikeno — Nyiragongo prep afternoon

Pre-dawn tea at the lodge, then transfer to Bukima patrol post for the mandatory ICCN ranger briefing. Staff explain trekking protocols: maintain at least 7 metres from gorillas, voices low, no eating or drinking near the animals, and a maximum one hour with the habituated family once contact is made. Your assigned gorilla group is confirmed here — Virunga's habituated families forage on Mikeno volcano's bamboo and hagenia slopes, often with shorter approaches than steep Bwindi sectors (commonly 1–4 hours each way, though longer treks occur).

With ICCN rangers and advance trackers, you enter Virunga National Park on foot for your mountain gorilla trek — the DRC's flagship primate encounter at roughly half Rwanda's permit cost. Trails climb through dense bamboo zones, volcanic mud and moss-draped hagenia between 2,200 and 3,000 metres. Trackers read broken vegetation, fresh dung, nest sites and vocalisations; armed escorts accompany every group given the park's security history. Porters can be hired at the briefing point (typically USD 15–20, paid locally).

Safari activity | Mountain gorilla trekking in Virunga NP

Track a habituated gorilla family through bamboo forest on Mikeno volcano with ICCN rangers and armed escort — Virunga's affordable gorilla trekking experience. One regulated hour with silverbacks, juveniles tumbling through vegetation, and nursing mothers at close range; certificate presentation at Bukima on return.

Gorilla trek callout: When trackers locate your group, you leave larger packs with porters and approach quietly through the bamboo. The hour on contact passes quickly — a dominant silverback may glance your way or beat his chest; juveniles launch between branches overhead; mothers nurse infants at arm's length on Mikeno's misty slopes. Virunga's gorillas share the same mountain-gorilla subspecies (Gorilla beringei beringei) as Rwanda and Uganda, but permits through ICCN are typically around USD 450 — making this one of Africa's best-value hour-with-gorillas experiences when the park is open. No two visits are identical, but the proximity in Virunga's dense forest is extraordinary. After the regulated hour, hike back to Bukima, receive your gorilla trekking certificate, and collect any stored gear.

Afternoon recovery is compressed but essential — tomorrow's Nyiragongo ascent at 3,470 m punishes unprepared legs. Hydrate aggressively, eat a substantial lodge dinner, and pack Nyiragongo kit tonight: warm fleece, beanie, gloves, headtorch, waterproof boots, gaiters, garden gloves for rope sections, and a 30-litre daypack. Optional visit to the Senkwekwe Orphan Gorilla Centre near Mikeno Lodge if time and security allow — the only mountain gorilla orphanage in the world, caring for infants rescued from poaching and conflict. No strenuous activity recommended this afternoon; early bed before Kibati transfer.

What to pack for gorilla day: Waterproof hiking boots; gaiters; gardening gloves; long trousers and sleeves; light rain jacket; neutral colours; energy snacks; 2–3 litres of water; camera without flash; passport and permit voucher.
Trek duration: 2–8 hours round trip typical
Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Same lodge as Day 1

Mount Nyiragongo overnight trek — lava lake at dusk

Early transfer from Bukima to Kibati patrol post — the Nyiragongo trailhead at roughly 1,870 m on Virunga's northern flank. Mandatory equipment check with rangers: confirm sleeping bag and mattress hire (approx. USD 15–20 locally if not brought), rain shell, warm summit layers, and headtorch with spare batteries. ICCN/Virunga trekking permits (approx. USD 300) are separate from yesterday's gorilla fee; cook team and porter fees are mandatory on the volcano.

10:00 briefing with armed Virunga rangers. The ascent climbs 5–7 hours through montane forest, old lava fields and volcanic scree to the summit crater at 3,470 m. Pace is regulated for altitude — the trail is non-technical but steep and often muddy. Nyiragongo's 2021 eruption sent lava through Goma's eastern suburbs; the mountain remains active, and the permanent lava lake in the summit crater is one of only a handful worldwide. Summit arrival before dusk is critical — the lake glows orange against the darkening crater walls as gas plumes drift across the rim.

Safari activity | Mount Nyiragongo overnight lava-lake hike

Steep volcano ascent with armed ranger escort to the summit crater rim — overnight at 3,470 m beside one of Earth's most dramatic active lava lakes, glowing orange against the crater walls at dusk and dawn.

Nyiragongo callout: Standing on the crater rim at dusk, the lava lake churns below like a forge — molten rock heaves in convection cells, gas bursts send orange sparks skyward, and the heat radiates across the rim even in cold mountain air. This is not a distant volcanic viewpoint; you are metres from an active lava lake that has persisted for decades, one of the planet's rarest geological spectacles. The basic summit shelters (shared bunks, no luxury) sit directly on the crater edge — pack every warm layer you have. Temperatures drop below freezing at night; frost forms on boots. Sunrise the next morning often reveals Nyiragongo's plume against Mikeno and Karisimbi on the horizon, with Lake Kivu glittering 2,000 metres below. Visibility is weather-dependent, but even misty summit nights feel primordial — you are camping on an active volcano in the heart of the Albertine Rift.

Overnight in Virunga summit shelters — basic bunks, cold night, cook team prepares dinner at the rim. Combined gorilla and Nyiragongo permits total roughly USD 750 through ICCN before porter tips and gear hire. See our permit guide for current Virunga rates and booking lead times.

What to pack for Nyiragongo: Warm fleece and down layer; beanie and gloves; waterproof boots; gaiters; headtorch; 30-litre daypack; 2–3 litres of water; energy snacks; sleeping bag (or hire locally); camera for long-exposure lava shots.
Hike duration: 5–7 hours ascent
Meals: Packed lunch on trail, dinner at summit
Accommodation: Nyiragongo summit shelter (basic shared bunk)

Nyiragongo descent & return to Kigali

Pre-dawn optional crater viewing if weather clears — the lava lake is often most vivid in darkness before first light. Sunrise over the Virunga chain can frame Mikeno, Karisimbi and the twin lakes of Kivu to the south. After breakfast at the rim, begin the 3–4 hour descent to Kibati on the same steep trail — trekking poles and garden gloves help on muddy sections. Porters carry overnight gear down while you focus on footing.

Meet your vehicle at Kibati and transfer through Goma to the Grande Barrière border crossing at Gisenyi (security permitting). The 2021 lava flow zone remains visible on Goma's eastern edge — a sobering reminder of Nyiragongo's power and why Virunga's rangers regulate every ascent. Lunch in Gisenyi or en route on RN4 through Rwanda's terraced highlands back to Kigali (approx. 3–4 hours from border, full day with descent).

Four days delivers both of Virunga's headline experiences — mountain gorillas on Mikeno and an overnight on the world's most accessible lava lake — without the fifth-day recovery buffer our longer packages include. Most fit travellers manage the back-to-back exertion, but if ICCN permit dates allow a gap day, consider upgrading to the 5-day Nyiragongo and gorilla circuit for genuine rest between treks. Allow buffer time for evening KGL departures; border formalities and descent pace vary.

Descent duration: 3–4 hours
Drive time: Approx. 3–4 hours Goma border to Kigali
Meals: Breakfast on summit, lunch en route
Best season: Dry months (June–September, January–February) for clearer lava-lake views; gorilla trekking runs year-round when park is open
