Tour overview
Four days, two Virunga icons: a mountain gorilla trek and Nyiragongo overnight hike back-to-back for adventurous travellers with confirmed consecutive permits. Based from Goma or Kigali with Mikeno Lodge accommodation between activities.
This is the minimum comfortable window for both experiences without omitting border time. Gorilla trekking in Virunga often involves shorter hikes than Bwindi (1–3 hours common) but altitude and mud still demand preparation. See our permit guide for current ICCN rates.

Day-by-day itinerary
Kigali to Virunga corridor — border & Mikeno Lodge
Your private 4×4 and English-speaking guide collect you from Kigali or KGL airport after breakfast for the northwest run along RN4 through Rwanda's terraced highlands toward Lake Kivu at Gisenyi/Rubavu (approx. 2.5–3 hours, 160 km). The road tracks the lake shore before the Grande Barrière border crossing into the Democratic Republic of Congo at Goma — allow 45–90 minutes for Rwanda exit stamps, DRC visa verification and ICCN permit checks with pre-arranged paperwork.
After clearance, transfer with Virunga Foundation escort to your lodge near Bukima patrol post on the forest edge of Virunga National Park (approx. 30–45 minutes from Goma). On clear afternoons Mount Nyiragongo dominates the skyline — the same volcano you will climb on Day 3. Evening safety briefing covers armed ranger escort protocols, curfew rules, gorilla sector allocation for tomorrow and Nyiragongo gear requirements: sleeping bag, warm layers to −5°C at summit, headtorch with spare batteries, gaiters and waterproof boots for both forest mud and volcanic scree.
Pack tonight for back-to-back permit days: gorilla trekking clothes (long sleeves, neutral colours, gardening gloves for nettles) separate from volcano kit (thermal base layers, beanie, gloves). ICCN gorilla permits are typically around USD 450 and Nyiragongo permits around USD 300 — see our permit guide for current rates. This compressed four-day loop demands reasonable fitness; there is no dedicated recovery day between primate trek and volcano ascent.

Mountain gorilla trekking — Bukima sector on Mikeno
Pre-dawn tea at the lodge, then transfer to Bukima patrol post for the mandatory ICCN ranger briefing at around 07:00. Staff explain trekking protocols: maintain distance from gorillas, no flash photography, voices low, no eating near the animals, and a maximum one hour with the habituated family once contact is made. Your assigned gorilla group is confirmed here — Virunga's habituated mountain gorilla families live in bamboo and hagenia zones on the slopes of Mikeno volcano (4,437 m), often with shorter approach hikes than Uganda's Bwindi sectors but still at altitude where mud and nettles demand gaiters and gloves.
With ICCN rangers, trackers and armed escort, you enter Virunga National Park on foot through montane forest at roughly 2,000–2,800 m elevation. Trekking duration is commonly 1–4 hours round trip depending on where your assigned family nested the previous night — Humba, Rugendo, Mapuwa and other habituated groups rotate across Bukima sectors. Trackers read broken vegetation, fresh dung and nest sites; porters (strongly recommended, paid locally) carry your daypack and steady you on root-choked trails. Along the approach you may notice golden monkey signs, colourful sunbirds and the giant lobelia that characterise the Afro-alpine fringe.
Safari activity | Mountain gorilla trekking in Virunga NP
Track a habituated mountain gorilla family on Mikeno volcano slopes with ICCN rangers and armed escort — DRC's flagship gorilla trekking experience at roughly USD 450 per permit. One regulated hour with silverbacks, juveniles tumbling through bamboo, and nursing mothers at close range; certificate ceremony at Bukima on return.
Gorilla trek callout: When trackers locate your group, you leave larger packs with porters and approach quietly. The hour on contact passes quickly — a dominant silverback may glance your way or beat his chest; juveniles launch through bamboo overhead; mothers nurse infants within metres. Virunga's gorillas share the same Virunga Massif habitat as Rwanda's Volcanoes families and Uganda's Mgahinga groups, but DRC permits remain the most affordable mountain gorilla trek in the region. No two visits are identical, but the proximity in Mikeno's bamboo forest is extraordinary. Rangers enforce distance guidelines while habituated families often approach closer. Photography is permitted without flash; a rain sleeve is essential even in dry season. After the regulated hour, hike back to Bukima for your gorilla trekking certificate, then return to lodge for lunch and an early night — tomorrow's Nyiragongo ascent begins at Kibati trailhead with minimal recovery time on this compressed itinerary.
Afternoon at leisure: repack for the volcano (warm layers, headtorch, water bottles), hydrate well, and confirm porter arrangements for Nyiragongo with your guide. Optional visit to the Senkwekwe Orphan Gorilla Centre at Rumangabo when park authorities permit — four rescued mountain gorillas in forested enclosures, a poignant reminder of Virunga's conservation challenges. Turn in early; summit night is cold and tomorrow's climb gains 1,500 m in roughly six hours.

Mount Nyiragongo overnight trek — lava lake at 3,470 m
Early breakfast, then transfer to Kibati patrol post at the base of Mount Nyiragongo (3,470 m) — the active stratovolcano whose 2021 eruption sent a lava flow through Goma's eastern suburbs. ICCN rangers and a mandatory cook-porter team lead the ascent through montane forest, lava fields and volcanic scree. The trail gains roughly 1,500 m over 5–7 hours depending on group fitness and weather; the final hour crosses exposed lava rock where walking poles and ankle support matter.
As altitude increases, vegetation thins to Afro-alpine shrubs and volcanic rubble. Cloud often rolls across the upper slopes by midday; clear afternoons reveal the full cone rising above Goma and Lake Kivu. Your cook team prepares trail lunch on the ascent while porters carry sleeping bags, mattresses (rentable at Kibati if needed) and summit dinner ingredients — you carry only a daypack with water, warm layers and rain shell.
Safari activity | Mount Nyiragongo overnight lava-lake hike
Ascend Africa's most dramatic active volcano to the summit crater shelter overlooking the world's largest persistent lava lake — one of only a handful of active lava lakes on Earth, glowing orange at dusk from the rim at 3,470 m.
Nyiragongo callout: Reaching the crater rim at dusk is the defining moment of this four-day circuit. The lava lake below churns and fountains in the fading light — molten rock reflecting off crater walls in shades of orange and red that no photograph fully captures. Nyiragongo has hosted a persistent lava lake for decades, making it one of the planet's most accessible active volcanic spectacles when park authorities confirm safe access. Temperatures at the summit shelter drop to near freezing; the basic bunk shelters have no heating — wear thermal base layers, fleece and down jacket inside your sleeping bag. The cook team serves hot dinner at the rim before you retreat to the shelter for a short, altitude-affected sleep. Stars above the crater compete with the lava glow below on clear nights — a sensory overload after yesterday's intimate gorilla hour on Mikeno's bamboo slopes.
Overnight in the summit crater shelter (basic bunks, shared facilities). Pack earplugs and a headtorch for midnight bathroom trips in the cold. Tomorrow's descent is 3–4 hours on the same trail — knees take the strain on loose scree, so poles help.

Nyiragongo descent & return to Kigali
Wake before dawn for optional final lava-lake viewing as the crater breathes steam into the cold morning air — the lake's surface patterns shift overnight as magma convects below. After summit breakfast prepared by the cook team, begin the descent to Kibati (approx. 3–4 hours) on lava rock and forest trail. Legs feel the previous two days: gorilla mud, volcano scree and altitude — trekking poles and careful footing on the steeper sections prevent slips.
Meet your vehicle at Kibati, transfer through Goma to the Grande Barrière border (approx. 30–45 minutes), complete DRC exit and Rwanda entry formalities, then continue along Lake Kivu to Kigali (approx. 3–4 hours from the border). Your guide can arrange KGL airport drop-off for evening international departures — allow adequate buffer after the descent and border crossing. Four days delivers both Virunga headline experiences: mountain gorillas on Mikeno and Nyiragongo's lava lake — Africa's most intense primate-and-volcano combination when permits align and park tourism is officially open.
