Tour overview
3 Days Queen Elizabeth Safari Uganda in Queen Elizabeth National Park unlockS both faces of Uganda’s most visited savannah reserve: the predator-rich Kasenyi Plains and the hippo-packed Kazinga Channel, with a third morning for crater-lake viewpoints or a final Mweya sector drive before the return to Kampala.
The park protects 1,978 square kilometres of grassland, crater lakes, forest and wetland — 95 mammal species and more than 600 birds in a landscape you can cross in a day yet never exhaust. This 3-day Queen Elizabeth wildlife safari builds in a full wildlife day (dawn game drive plus afternoon boat) without the rush of a 2-day weekend loop.

Day-by-day itinerary
Kampala to Queen Elizabeth National Park
Your guide collects you from Kampala or Entebbe before dawn for the southwest run via Masaka and Mbarara (approx. 6–7 hours on tarmac). Pause at the Uganda Equator at Kayabwe for the classic water-drain demonstration and coffee, then continue through rolling Ankole cattle country toward the Albertine Rift.
The road passes Lyantonde and the long-horned Ankole herds of western Uganda before Mbarara — a useful lunch stop with grilled goat or matoke. Beyond Mbarara the landscape lifts toward the Kigezi escarpment; on clear days the snow-capped peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains appear above tea plantations near Kasese. Your guide handles UWA park registration at the Katunguru or Kasese gate before the short transfer to your lodge near Mweya Peninsula or the Katwe crater lakes.
Arrive at Queen Elizabeth National Park by mid-afternoon and check in. Queen Elizabeth is Uganda’s most visited national park — a stronghold for lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and more than 600 bird species across savannah, crater lakes and forest patches. Three days here unlocks both faces of the park: predator-rich Kasenyi Plains and the hippo-packed Kazinga Channel, with time tomorrow for the crater-lake viewpoints that ring the Katwe–Kabatoro explosion craters.
Afternoon at leisure near Mweya or an optional short drive in the Mweya sector for elephant, bushbuck and waterbuck along the peninsula tracks. Buffalo and warthog often graze below lodge terraces at dusk; hippos sometimes wander onto lawns at properties close to the channel after dark. Sunset from the terrace overlooks Lake Edward and the Kazinga waterway — a quiet introduction before tomorrow’s dawn Kasenyi drive and afternoon boat safari.
Dinner overlooking the channel or a nearby crater lake. Enganzi Lodge and Bush Lodge are popular mid-range picks on the park boundary; Mweya Safari Lodge sits on the peninsula itself with direct channel views. Set your alarm early — Day 2 pairs Queen Elizabeth’s two headline experiences back to back.
Drive time: Approx. 6–7 hours
Meals: Lunch & dinner
Accommodation: Mweya area lodge
Kasenyi Plains game drive & Kazinga Channel boat cruise
Pre-dawn tea at the lodge, then a short transfer to the Kasenyi Plains gate on the park’s northeast circuit — Queen Elizabeth’s prime predator territory east of the Kazinga Channel. Lion prides use the open grassland to hunt Uganda kob, the park’s signature antelope, at first and last light when the cats are most active.
Your UWA ranger-guide reads tracks in the road dust and listens for guinea fowl alarm calls that often betray a leopard still hunting at dawn. Spotted hyena, side-striped jackal, Defassa waterbuck, bushbuck and warthog are regular; elephant and buffalo herds cross the plains between forest patches. The Rwenzori foothills make a sharp photographic backdrop when skies are clear — many visitors rate Kasenyi as the park’s most reliable big-cat sector on a short safari window.
Game drives here typically run 3–4 hours on established ranger tracks; off-road driving is not permitted, so patience and sharp eyes reward early starters. Tree-climbing lions are more common in the distant Ishasha sector — adding Ishasha extends the route by roughly four hours of driving and is best on a longer itinerary rather than this classic Mweya–Kasenyi loop. Return to the lodge for a full breakfast and a rest before the afternoon boat.
After lunch, board a 2-hour boat safari on the Kazinga Channel — the natural waterway linking Lakes George and Edward. The channel holds one of Africa’s densest hippo populations — pods of thirty or more animals yawn and grunt within metres of the boat. Nile crocodiles bask on muddy banks; elephant and buffalo herds file down to drink; African fish eagles scream from dead trees along the shoreline.
Birders scan for African skimmer, malachite kingfisher, yellow-billed stork, pink-backed pelican and the channel’s speciality waterbirds. UWA-licensed boats depart from Mweya Jetty; life jackets are provided and rangers point out individual hippos the crew recognise by scar patterns. Late-afternoon light on the water is exceptional for photography — elephant silhouettes on the bank and skimmers hawking above the surface.
Return to the lodge as the Rwenzori foothills turn gold. Dinner and overnight near Mweya. Kasenyi lions and Kazinga hippos in a single day — the two experiences that define Queen Elizabeth for most visitors.
Activity duration: Approx. 3–4 hours game drive; approx. 2 hours on the Kazinga Channel
Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Accommodation: Same lodge as Day 1
Safari activity | Kasenyi Plains game drive
Dawn drive across open savannah where lion prides stalk Uganda kob at first light — leopard, spotted hyena and elephant are regular on the park’s most productive predator circuit east of the Kazinga Channel.Safari activity | Kazinga Channel boat safari
Two-hour boat cruise on the channel linking Lakes George and Edward — dense hippo pods, elephant and buffalo on the banks, and outstanding birding including African skimmer, malachite kingfisher and yellow-billed stork.Crater lakes tour or Mweya drive — return to Kampala
Your final morning offers two strong options before the long drive back. The classic choice is an optional crater lakes tour through the Katwe–Kabatoro explosion craters — surreal blue-green lakes in volcanic calderas, with traditional salt mining at Lake Katwe and panoramic views across the Albertine Rift Valley floor. Guides explain how local communities harvest salt from the hyper-saline pans while flamingos and waterbirds work the shallower pools.
Alternatively, a short morning game drive in the Mweya sector targets elephant, bushbuck and waterbuck along the peninsula tracks — a quieter circuit than Kasenyi, with Lake Edward stretching to the Congolese border and the Kazinga Channel visible from several viewpoints. Both options finish in time for checkout and the return journey.
Drive back to Kampala or Entebbe (approx. 6–7 hours) with lunch en route in Mbarara or Masaka and a second Equator stop at Kayabwe. Roadside stalls sell roasted gonja, fresh pineapple and Ankole milk in gourds. Airport drop-off in Entebbe can be arranged for late-evening international flights — allow adequate buffer after a full drive day from the park.
Optional Kyambura Gorge chimp tracking can replace the crater-lake tour on Day 3 morning if permits are available — the gorge is nicknamed the Valley of the Apes for its steep forested walls and habituated chimp community. Permits are limited and must be booked in advance; your guide confirms availability when you reserve this 3-day safari.
Kasenyi predators, Kazinga boat wildlife and a crater-lake or Mweya morning in three days — Uganda’s most accessible savannah park from Kampala, with enough time to enjoy both headline experiences without rushing.
