2 Days Sipi Falls & Jinja Tour

Uganda · Waterfalls & Nile

No-obligation proposal with named lodges, included permits and a complete safari price.

Tour overview

Sipi Falls on Mount Elgon’s western foothills drops in three cascades above the Karamoja plains — a landscape of basalt cliffs, Arabica coffee farms and wide views toward Kenya on clear mornings. This 2 Days Sipi Falls & Jinja Tour pairs eastern Uganda’s mountain scenery with a Nile afternoon in Jinja on the return leg: waterfall hikes and coffee culture one day, Speke’s source monument and riverside crafts the next. From Kampala or Entebbe you drive roughly 5–6 hours east via Mbale into Kapchorwa district. Day 2 descends through sugar cane and banana country to Jinja before the final run back to the capital — a strong eastern sampler without the long haul to the southwest.

Day-by-day itinerary

Kampala to Sipi Falls — waterfall hike & coffee tour

Your private 4×4 safari vehicle and English-speaking driver-guide collect you from Kampala or Entebbe before dawn for the eastbound run through Mukono and Iganga toward Mbale town (approx. 5–6 hours on tarmac, with a lunch stop en route). The landscape shifts from central Uganda’s banana belts and Lake Victoria views to the cooler, greener slopes of the Elgon massif — Uganda’s oldest extinct volcano and the fourth-highest peak in East Africa at 4,321 metres. Many travellers pause in Mbale for roasted gonja, fresh pineapple and a stretch before the final climb into Kapchorwa district. Arrive at Sipi Falls on Mount Elgon’s western escarpment — one of Uganda’s most photographed landscapes. The falls drop in three distinct cascades above the plains of eastern Uganda: the main fall (roughly 85 metres) plunges over a basalt cliff face; the middle and upper falls sit further up the ridge, reachable on optional morning walks. On clear days the viewpoint looks across the Karamoja plains toward Kenya’s Cherangani Hills, with Mbale town spread below and Elgon’s forested caldera rim visible to the east. The basalt columns and spray mist create a cool microclimate that supports Arabica coffee, banana groves and montane forest patches along the escarpment. Check in at your lodge on the cliff edge — Sipi River Lodge, Lacam Lodge and Crow’s Nest Camp all sit within walking distance of the main trailhead. Freshen up, then set out on the afternoon hike to the main Sipi waterfall viewpoint (moderate trail, roughly 1.5 hours return on well-worn paths with stone steps in steeper sections). Local guides know every switchback and will point out wild orchids, colobus monkeys in the fig trees and the roar of the cascade long before you reach the spray zone. Waterproof kit and grippy footwear are essential — the mist soaks the viewpoint platform year-round.

Activity | Sipi Falls hike & coffee tour

Afternoon trail to the main cascade and a farm visit on Mount Elgon’s slopes — Uganda’s classic eastern highlands combination of waterfall scenery and Arabica coffee culture.
After the falls, continue to a nearby Kapchorwa coffee farm for the full bean-to-cup story. Mount Elgon’s slopes produce some of Uganda’s finest Arabica — cherries are hand-picked, pulped, fermented, washed and sun-dried on raised beds before roasting. Your host walks you through each stage, often ending with a fresh brew on the veranda overlooking the plantation. The Kapchorwa–Sipi area is part of Uganda’s specialty coffee renaissance; many farms supply export-grade beans while keeping a small batch for lodge guests and local markets. Optional abseiling down the cliff face beside the main fall can be booked locally through accredited operators — a 100-metre descent with views over the Karamoja plains (additional fee, weather-dependent). Sunset from the lodge terrace is one of eastern Uganda’s finest panoramas: the escarpment glows gold, lights flicker on in Mbale below and, on the clearest evenings, the outline of Mount Elgon’s caldera catches the last light. Dinner and overnight at your Sipi lodge. Drive time: Approx. 5–6 hours from Kampala or Entebbe; add 30–45 minutes from Entebbe Activity duration: Approx. 1.5 hours falls hike; 1 hour coffee tour Meals: Lunch & dinner Accommodation: Sipi area lodge on the escarpment

Morning Sipi — Jinja Nile stop — Kampala

Optional pre-dawn sunrise walk to the upper falls or a second coffee farm visit before breakfast — the escarpment catches first light long before the plains below, and photographers often rate the upper cascade trail as quieter than yesterday’s main viewpoint. Check out and begin the descent toward the Nile basin (approx. 2 hours to Jinja on good tarmac through sugar cane estates and banana plantations that replace Kapchorwa’s cooler coffee country). Arrive in Jinja — Uganda’s adventure capital on the Victoria Nile — for lunch and an afternoon at the Source of the Nile. John Hanning Speke reached this point in 1862 and identified it as the river’s outlet from Lake Victoria, settling a Victorian-era geographical debate that had obsessed explorers for decades. Today a monument, information boards and riverside walkways mark the spot where the Nile begins its 6,650-kilometre journey to the Mediterranean. Local boatmen offer short launches onto the lake–river channel; kingfishers, cormorants and monitor lizards are common along the banks.

Activity | Source of the Nile visit

Afternoon stop at the Nile’s source on the return leg — Speke’s historic discovery point where the Victoria Nile leaves Lake Victoria, with optional boat trip and crafts market browsing.
Explore the riverside crafts market for bark-cloth, beaded jewellery, carved wooden hippos and printed textiles — Jinja’s market is livelier than Kampala’s tourist stalls and prices are negotiable in good humour. Adventure operators line the river below Bujagali if you want a taste of Jinja’s adrenaline scene: white-water rafting through Grade III–V rapids, kayaking, quad biking or a gentle sunset cruise can be arranged on longer itineraries, though this 2-day loop typically keeps the source visit and market as the Jinja highlight before the drive west. Mid-afternoon departure for Kampala or Entebbe (approx. 2 hours from Jinja on the Kampala–Jinja highway). The return road passes Mabira Forest — a remnant tropical rainforest where roadside stalls sell fresh sugar cane juice — before dropping into the capital basin. Your guide times departure to avoid Sunday afternoon traffic if applicable, and can arrange Entebbe airport drop-off for evening international flights. Allow at least two hours buffer after leaving Jinja given checkpoint stops and Kampala ring-road congestion. Mountain waterfalls and Elgon coffee one day, Nile history and riverside culture the next: two days gives you eastern Uganda’s best scenery-and-adventure pairing without the long haul to Bwindi or Queen Elizabeth. Sipi suits travellers who want landscape and farm visits; Jinja bookends the trip with one of Africa’s great river stories — a strong sampler for first-time visitors to Uganda’s east.
