15 Days Grand Ethiopia Tour

Ethiopia · Comprehensive circuit

No-obligation proposal with named lodges, included permits and a complete safari price.

Tour overview

Ethiopia's definitive grand circuit — the full northern historic route from Lalibela rock churches through Axum stelae and Gondar castles, then the escarpment drama of the Simien Mountains, Blue Nile falls at Bahir Dar, rare Ethiopian wolf on the Sanetti Plateau in Bale Mountains, and a condensed but deep Omo Valley cultural finale.

Fifteen days for travellers who refuse to choose between antiquity, endemic wildlife and living tribal heritage. Omo callouts include Hammer ochre braids at Turmi, Mursi lip-plate tradition in Mago National Park, and Karo body painting above the Omo River — community fees and photography etiquette built into every village visit.

Day-by-day itinerary

Addis Ababa — arrival & grand circuit briefing

Arrive Addis Ababa (Bole International Airport). Afternoon city introduction — National Museum (Lucy fossil and Ethiopian prehistory), Entoto Park viewpoint over the capital and a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony. Evening briefing on the fifteen-day routing: domestic flight segments (Addis–Lalibela–Axum–Gondar–Arba Minch), Simien and Bale trekking kit, Omo community photography protocols and market-day calendar for Turmi and Dimeka.

Overnight: Hyatt Regency, Radisson Blu or Golden Tulip Addis

Fly Addis Ababa to Lalibela — rock-hewn churches

Morning flight to Lalibela (approx. 1 hour). Afternoon visit to the northwestern cluster — Bet Medhane Alem (largest monolithic church in the world), Bet Maryam and Bet Golgotha with painted ceilings and priest-led worship. Your guide explains King Lalibela's 12th-century vision: churches carved downward from living rock to create a New Jerusalem in the Lasta highlands.

Overnight: Mountain View Hotel, Maribela Hotel or Lalibela Hudad Eco-Lodge

Lalibela — Bet Giyorgis at dawn & southeastern cluster

Pre-dawn visit to Bet Giyorgis — the iconic cross-shaped church photographed from the trench rim as Orthodox pilgrims begin morning prayer. Continue through the southeastern cluster — connected passageways, hermit cells and drainage channels carved from solid tuff. Afternoon hike to Asheten Maryam monastery on the escarpment for panoramic views over the church complex.

Overnight: Lalibela

Fly Lalibela to Axum — stelae & ancient capital

Morning flight to Axum (approx. 45 minutes). Full afternoon among the Great Stelae Field — the 33-metre Obelisk of Axum (re-erected 2008), King Ezana's trilingual inscription stone and the underground tombs of ancient Aksumite rulers. Visit St Mary of Zion church complex, where Ethiopian tradition holds the Ark of the Covenant is kept. Axum was the capital of a trading empire that linked Rome, India and Arabia — your guide traces the historic route's deepest antiquity here.

Overnight: Sabean Hotel, Yeha Hotel or Axum heritage lodge

Axum to Gondar — castles of the Solomonic dynasty

Scenic drive southwest to Gondar (approx. 6–7 hours on winding highland roads, or domestic flight shortcut if scheduled). Afternoon at Fasil Ghebbi (Royal Enclosure) — UNESCO-listed castles of Emperor Fasilides, Iyasu's palace and the bathing pool of Fasilides where Timkat festival is celebrated each January. Gondar was Ethiopia's imperial capital from the 17th century — the Camelot of Africa.

Overnight: Goha Hotel Gondar or Mayleko Lodge

Gondar to Simien Mountains — escarpment entry

Morning optional visit to Debre Berhan Selassie church — ceiling painted with 80 cherubic faces. Drive to Debark and enter Simien Mountains National Park with registered scout — continue to Sankaber or Chennek viewpoints (approx. 2–3 hours on rough mountain road). Late-afternoon first encounters with gelada baboon troops grazing at the cliff edge — unique grass-eating primates found only in the Ethiopian highlands.

Overnight: Limalimo Lodge, Simien Lodge or Sankaber camp

Simien Mountains — gelada trek & Walia ibex

Full day guided trek along the escarpment rim (moderate fitness; 3–5 hours) — gelada troops at close range, chance sightings of endangered Walia ibex on crags, and spectacular drop-offs to the lowlands 1,000 metres below. Optional extension to Imet Gogo viewpoint for the classic Simien panorama. Lammergeier and thick-billed raven drift on thermals above the escarpment.

Overnight: Simien lodge or camp

Simien to Bahir Dar — Blue Nile falls

Descend from the Simien and drive south to Bahir Dar on Lake Tana (approx. 7–8 hours via Gondar, or flight shortcut). Afternoon boat or road trip to the Blue Nile Falls (Tis Issat) — the smoke of fire waterfall thundering into the gorge; volume varies seasonally but the setting remains one of the historic route's great natural landmarks. Sunset over Lake Tana's papyrus shores.

Overnight: Kuriftu Resort, Avanti Blue Nile or Bahir Dar hotel

Bahir Dar to Bale Mountains — Sanetti Plateau approach

Long drive southeast to the Bale Mountains National Park (approx. 7–8 hours via Shashemene, or domestic flight to Robe/Goba if scheduled). Enter the park's afro-alpine zone — giant lobelias, moorland and the highest all-weather road in Africa climbing toward the Sanetti Plateau (over 4,000 metres). Brief acclimatisation walk; pack warm layers for cold dawn wolf tracking tomorrow.

Overnight: Bale Mountain Lodge, Wabe Shebelle Hotel Goba or Dinsho park lodge

Bale Mountains — Ethiopian wolf & mountain nyala

Pre-dawn drive onto the Sanetti Plateau for Ethiopian wolf tracking — the world's rarest canid, found only in Ethiopia's high-altitude moorland. Your guide scans for wolves hunting giant mole-rats among the lobelias. Afternoon in the Harenna Forest edge or Dinsho woodland for mountain nyala, Menelik's bushbuck and juniper forest birdlife. Bale is Ethiopia's premier endemic wildlife destination on the grand circuit.

Overnight: Bale Mountains lodge

Bale to Arba Minch — Rift Valley descent

Descend from the Bale highlands (approx. 6–7 hours drive south) toward the Great Rift Valley. Reach Arba Minch between Lakes Abaya and Chamo — transition from cool wolf plateau to the hot, dry south before the Omo finale. Late-afternoon viewpoint at Forty Springs escarpment overlooking Nechisar National Park.

Overnight: Haile Resort Arba Minch or Paradise Lodge

Konso to Turmi — entering the Omo Valley

Morning drive through the Konso Cultural Landscape (UNESCO, approx. 2 hours) — walled villages, generation poles (waka), stone terracing and age-set systems. Continue south to Turmi (approx. 3–4 hours on gravel), heartland of the Hammer people. En route, watch for Ari potters and Bena farmers. If timing aligns, witness a Hammer bull-jumping ceremony (seasonal — not guaranteed; your guide monitors community calendars).

Overnight: Buska Lodge, Turmi Lodge or Lale's Camp

Turmi & Jinka — Hammer markets, Mursi & Mago

Early visit to Dimeka market (Saturday) or Turmi market (Monday) — Hammer, Bena, Ari and Tsemay peoples trade tobacco, sorghum beer, beads, livestock and ochre. Continue to Jinka (approx. 3 hours). Enter Mago National Park for Mursi community visits — women wearing clay lip plates, men with ritual scarification. Your guide explains context beyond the postcard image. Photography only with permission; fair compensation negotiated directly with families.

Overnight: Eco Omo Lodge or Jinka Resort

Karo body painting — Omo River bluff

Early drive toward the Omo River at Kangateen for Karo village visits on the escarpment — elaborate white chalk and red ochre body painting, scarification patterns and views over the river where crocodiles bask on sandbars. The Karo are among the valley's smallest groups (~1,000 people) and their art is a living tradition, not performance. Afternoon at the South Omo Research Centre & Museum for ethnographic background. Drive north toward Arba Minch (approx. 5–6 hours).

Overnight: Haile Resort Arba Minch or Paradise Lodge

Arba Minch to Addis Ababa — departure

Morning flight from Arba Minch to Addis Ababa (approx. 1 hour). Optional final shopping at Shiro Meda textile market or airport-side coffee before international departure from Bole International Airport. Debrief on the grand circuit — Lalibela to Axum antiquity, Simien geladas, Bale wolves and Omo valley encounters in fifteen days.
