How to get to Watamu
Watamu sits on Kenya's north coast in Kilifi County, roughly 24 kilometres south of Malindi and 120 kilometres north of Mombasa. Watamu has no commercial airport — most travelers fly to Malindi Airport (MYD) from Nairobi Wilson and transfer south by road (approximately 20–30 minutes).
Flights to Malindi Airport
Scheduled and charter flights operate between Nairobi Wilson (WIL) and Malindi — flight time roughly 1 hour 15 minutes. After Maasai Mara safaris, the standard route is bush airstrip to Wilson, connect to Malindi, then road transfer to Watamu beach lodges.
Pre-arrange Watamu lodge transfers from Malindi Airport — tuk-tuks and taxis serve the coastal highway south.
From Maasai Mara and inland safaris
After Maasai Mara game drives, fly Mara bush airstrips to Wilson, connect to Malindi, transfer to Watamu — typically one travel day. Plan buffer time rather than stacking tight connections.
Nairobi is the hub for all domestic coast flights.
From Nairobi
Nairobi options include:
- Wilson–Malindi flights plus Watamu road transfer — fastest option
- Road via Mombasa (roughly 8–10 hours total from Nairobi) — budget overland, rarely chosen after long safaris
- SGR train Nairobi–Mombasa, then road north through Watamu to Malindi — scenic alternative
International arrivals via Mombasa
Travelers landing at Moi International Airport (MBA) in Mombasa drive north along the coastal highway — approximately 2 hours to Watamu, passing through Kilifi. Pre-arrange lodge transfers or licensed taxis.
Overland from Tsavo East
Combined Tsavo East safaris often descend toward the north coast on multi-day overland routes — logical geography avoiding Nairobi backtracking. Confirm timing and road conditions with your operator.
Road from Malindi to Watamu
The coastal highway connects Malindi town and Watamu village in 20–30 minutes — easy for split stays between Malindi heritage nights and Watamu reef lodges. Tuk-tuks, taxis, and lodge shuttles serve the corridor daily.
Local transfers in Watamu
Watamu village is compact — most beach lodges lie within tuk-tuk distance of marine park boat departures, Local Ocean Conservation, and Mida Creek boardwalk (approximately 10–15 minutes south of central Watamu). Arabuko-Sokoke Forest entrance is roughly 10 minutes inland.
Combining with onward destinations
Most Watamu visitors depart via Malindi Airport to Wilson and Nairobi for international flights. Continue north toward Lamu Island via Malindi–Lamu road connections. South-coast Diani Beach routes through Mombasa.
