How to get to Stone Town
Stone Town is the historic quarter of Zanzibar City on Unguja island — Tanzania's main Zanzibar island. There is no road bridge from the mainland; access is by air to ZNZ or ferry from Dar es Salaam. Stone Town itself is walkable from many ZNZ airport transfers in roughly 15–20 minutes.
International and regional flights to ZNZ
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) sits beside Stone Town. Direct and connecting flights serve ZNZ from European hubs (seasonal), the Middle East, Nairobi, Johannesburg, and regional East African cities. Many travelers fly into Tanzania via Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Dar es Salaam (DAR), complete a mainland safari or climb, then connect domestically to ZNZ.
Pre-arrange Stone Town hotel transfers or licensed taxis at arrivals — alleys are not vehicle-friendly, so properties often meet guests at fringe parking points.
From Arusha and the Northern Circuit
After Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, or Tarangire National Park safaris, most travelers fly from Arusha (ARK) or Kilimanjaro (JRO) to ZNZ — typically 1–1.5 hours. - Ferry from Dar port to Stone Town harbour (roughly 2 hours on fast ferries) — budget-friendly, weather-dependent

From Nairobi and Kenya
Nairobi (NBO) connects to ZNZ on regional carriers — useful for itineraries combining Maasai Mara National Reserve with a Zanzibar finale via Stone Town without routing through Uganda. Flight time is roughly 1.5 hours.
Getting around Stone Town
The UNESCO quarter is walkable — alleys are narrow, often stairs-only in historic buildings. Dala-dala minibuses and taxis serve fringe areas and spice-farm tour departures. After one to two Stone Town nights, road transfers to north-coast (Nungwi/Kendwa) or east-coast (Paje/Matemwe) lodges take 60–90 minutes depending on property location.
Uganda and Rwanda combinations
