How to get to Pemba Island
Pemba Island lies in the northern Zanzibar Archipelago, roughly 50 kilometres north of Unguja (main Zanzibar island) across the Pemba Channel. There is no road bridge and no regular passenger ferry from Zanzibar — access is almost exclusively by air to Pemba Airport (Karume Airport), with main towns Chake Chake, Wete, and Mkoani spread across the fertile Green Island.
Flights from Zanzibar
The most common routing for Spice Islands itineraries: arrive at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) on Unguja — often after Stone Town culture or beach time — then board a scheduled light aircraft to Pemba Airport. Flight time is roughly 20–30 minutes. Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, and regional carriers operate connections; schedules are less frequent than ZNZ–Dar es Salaam routes — confirm before locking lodge dates.
Flights from Dar es Salaam
Dar es Salaam (DAR) offers direct connections to Pemba Airport for travelers skipping Unguja — typically useful after mainland safari without a Zanzibar stopover. Flight time is roughly 30–40 minutes. Julius Nyerere International Airport serves international arrivals before domestic connections.
From the Serengeti and Northern Circuit
After Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, or Mount Kilimanjaro adventures, most travelers fly from bush airstrips or Arusha to Zanzibar (ZNZ) or Dar es Salaam, then connect north to Pemba the same day or following morning.
A popular pattern: Northern Circuit safari → ZNZ → two to three Stone Town nights → Pemba flight → four to seven Green Island nights. Allow a buffer night in Stone Town when same-day bush-strip-to-Pemba connections are tight.
From Mafia Island and southern routes
Travelers on Mafia Island typically route back through Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar before flying north to Pemba — there are no direct inter-island flights on standard schedules. Plan a full travel day for this leg.
On-island transfers
Pemba Airport lies centrally on the island. Lodge transfers to northern properties (Kigomasha, The Manta Resort area) take roughly 60–90 minutes by road. West-coast dive lodges and Chake Chake harbour access may take 30–60 minutes depending on property. Confirm transfer inclusion when booking — roads are winding through clove plantations.
Dive operators arrange Misali Island boat departures from west-coast bases and Chake Chake harbour — factor morning road time into dive-day schedules.
Getting around Pemba
Private lodge transfers, hired vehicles with drivers, and occasional shared taxis connect main towns. The island has road infrastructure between Chake Chake, Wete, and Mkoani — unlike car-free Lamu, Pemba supports vehicle access to plantations and remote beaches.
Combining with onward destinations
Most Pemba visitors depart via Pemba Airport to Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam for international flights. Some continue south to Mafia Island on broader Indian Ocean dive itineraries (routing via Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam). Return to the mainland for Northern Circuit extensions or cross-border Kenya routes via Nairobi.
