How to get to Mombasa
Mombasa is Kenya's main Indian Ocean port and coastal aviation hub. International and domestic visitors arrive at Moi International Airport (MBA) west of the city, by road or rail from Nairobi, or on organised safari transfers from Tsavo East and Tsavo West descending toward the coast.
Flying into Moi International Airport (MBA)
Moi International Airport receives flights from Nairobi (roughly 1 hour), regional East African hubs, Middle East connections, and seasonal European charters. Kenya Airways and regional carriers operate multiple daily Nairobi–Mombasa departures. Immigration and baggage collection typically take thirty to sixty minutes; pre-book hotel transfers or safari operator meet-and-greet.
MBA lies roughly 10 km west of central Mombasa and Nyali Beach resorts — 20–40 minutes by car depending on traffic. Confirm whether your lodge is on the island, north coast (Nyali/Bamburi), or south coast (requires Likoni Ferry).
From Nairobi by air, road, and rail
Flights: Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta (NBO) and Wilson (WIL) connect to MBA in roughly one hour — the fastest option after Maasai Mara bush flights land at Wilson.
Road: The A109 Mombasa Highway covers roughly 480 km — typically five to six hours from Nairobi depending on traffic and stops. Overland safaris often break at Amboseli or Tsavo West en route.
Rail: The SGR Madaraka Express runs Nairobi–Mombasa in roughly five hours — book ahead for economy and first-class seats; terminal transfers to Nyali or Likoni require taxi or operator pickup.
Likoni Ferry to Diani and south coast
Mombasa island connects to the south coast via the Likoni Ferry — free pedestrian and vehicle crossing on scheduled ferries. Queues build at rush hour; allow 30–60 minutes buffer during peak times. After crossing, Diani Beach lies roughly 30–40 km — another 30–40 minutes to central Diani resorts.
Alternatively fly to Ukunda Airstrip (UKA) from Nairobi Wilson — skipping Likoni entirely — the standard Diani arrival for Mara-to-beach itineraries.
Mombasa to Watamu and Malindi
The A14 coastal highway north reaches Malindi in roughly two hours and Watamu shortly beyond — scenic ocean views through Kilifi. Malindi Airport receives domestic flights from Mombasa (30–45 minutes) for faster north-coast access.
Tsavo safaris from Mombasa
Tsavo East lies inland roughly 100–150 km — two to three hours to main gates. Tsavo West access via Taveta or Mtito Andei routes suits two to three night safari extensions before coast recovery. Licensed operators depart daily from Mombasa and Diani hotels.
From Tanzania and Uganda combinations
Overland routes enter Kenya at Lunga Lunga (Tanzania border south of Diani) and Namanga (Tanzania–Amboseli axis inland). Uganda–Kenya combinations often fly Entebbe to NBO, safari inland, then MBA or Wilson–Ukunda for coast finales. Zanzibar connections route via Nairobi on regional carriers.
Getting around Mombasa city
Old Town and Fort Jesus suit walking tours with licensed guides. Tuk-tuks, taxis, and ride apps operate on the island and Nyali strip. Traffic and Likoni timing dominate logistics — avoid scheduling MBA departures immediately after south-coast lodge check-out without ferry buffers.
