How to get to Malindi
Malindi sits on Kenya's north coast in Kilifi County, roughly 120 kilometres northeast of Mombasa on Malindi Bay. Most safari-and-beach travelers fly to Malindi Airport (MYD) from Nairobi's Wilson Airport; international visitors often land at Moi International Airport in Mombasa (MBA) and transfer north by road.
Flights to Malindi Airport
Scheduled and charter flights operate between Nairobi Wilson (WIL) and Malindi — flight time roughly 1 hour 15 minutes. This is the standard connection after Maasai Mara safaris: bush airstrip to Wilson, connect to Malindi, lodge transfer (approximately 15–30 minutes to beach properties).
Peak-season seats book early when pairing Mara migration dates with reef lodges.
From Maasai Mara and inland safaris
After Maasai Mara game drives, most travelers fly from Mara bush airstrips to Wilson, then connect to Malindi the same day or following morning. Total travel time is typically one long transfer day — plan a buffer rather than stacking tight connections.
Nairobi serves as the usual hub for all domestic coast connections.
From Nairobi
Nairobi options include:
- Wilson–Malindi flights — fastest and most comfortable
- Road transfer via Mombasa (roughly 8–10 hours total) — budget option, rarely chosen after long safaris
- SGR train Nairobi–Mombasa, then road north to Malindi (approximately 2.5 hours from Mombasa) — scenic alternative
International arrivals via Mombasa
Travelers landing at Moi International Airport (MBA) in Mombasa transfer north by road to Malindi — approximately 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic. Pre-arrange lodge transfers or licensed taxis.
Some itineraries fly internationally into Nairobi (NBO), complete safari, then connect Wilson–Malindi — avoiding Mombasa entirely.
Overland from Tsavo East
Combined Tsavo East safaris often descend toward the north coast on multi-day routes — a logical geography that avoids backtracking through Nairobi. Road conditions and lodge locations shape whether this suits your itinerary; flying remains faster after long bush drives.
Road from Mombasa to Malindi
The coastal highway north from Mombasa passes through Kilifi and Watamu before reaching Malindi — useful for split stays combining Watamu reef days with Malindi town nights. Taxis, shared minibuses, and lodge transfers serve the corridor.
Local transfers in Malindi
Malindi Airport lies roughly 10–15 minutes from central town and Casuarina Beach marine park gate. Tuk-tuks, taxis, and lodge shuttles serve the area. Gede Ruins and Arabuko-Sokoke Forest are approximately 20–30 minutes inland.
Combining with onward destinations
Most Malindi visitors depart via Wilson to Nairobi for international flights, or continue north toward Lamu Island via Malindi–Lamu road and air connections. South-coast Diani Beach typically routes through Mombasa or Nairobi.
