3 Days Chobe Riverfront Safari (Botswana)
Botswana · Elephants from the water
Tour overview
Chobe National Park holds Africau{2019}s largest elephant concentration — herds of hundreds drink, mud-bathe and swim along the Chobe River frontage near Kasane. This 3-day Chobe river safari is built around the parku{2019}s two signature experiences: open-vehicle game drives on the Serondela river terrace and a Chobe River boat cruise at sunset, when elephants cross trunk-to-trunk between Botswana and Namibiau{2019}s Impalila Island just metres from your deck.
Most travellers arrive by road from Victoria Falls (Botswana–Zimbabwe border, approx. 90 minutes) or by scheduled flight into Kasane from Johannesburg, Gaborone or Maun. Dry season May–October concentrates game along permanent water and delivers the densest elephant viewing; green season November–April brings dramatic skies, newborn antelope and spectacular carmine bee-eater colonies along the sandbanks. Chobe pairs naturally with Victoria Falls, the Okavango Delta or a longer Botswana circuit.

Day-by-day itinerary
Kasane — Chobe riverfront game drive
Arrive at Kasane by road from Victoria Falls (approx. 90 minutes) or by scheduled flight from Johannesburg or Gaborone. Your guide meets you at Kasane airport, the Kazungula border post or your Victoria Falls hotel and transfers to your lodge on the Chobe River — many properties sit directly above the floodplain where elephant trails lead to the water each afternoon.
Check in, freshen up and enjoy lunch overlooking the river. During the midday heat, elephant and buffalo often rest in the shade of riverine figs while fish eagles and African darters work the shallows. Your guide briefs you on park rules, photography etiquette around elephant herds and what to expect on the afternoon drive.
Mid-afternoon, board an open 4×4 for your first Chobe riverfront game drive along the Sedudu Valley and Serondela terrace — the northern section of the park where Chobe's famous elephant densities are highest. Herds numbering in the hundreds are the headline species, but buffalo, puku, impala, kudu, giraffe, warthog and prolific birdlife fill the frame. Carmine bee-eaters nest in sandbanks from August; saddle-billed storks and goliath herons patrol the water's edge. Lion and leopard are possible at dusk as the light turns golden over the Zambezi floodplain and Namibia's Caprivi Strip.

Afternoon 4×4 drive on the northern floodplain — one of Africa's densest elephant concentrations, with buffalo, puku, impala and excellent birding along the Sedudu Valley and Serondela river terrace.
Return to the lodge at sunset for dinner and a riverside drink. Night sounds carry across the water — hippo grunts, distant lion contact calls and the splash of elephant crossing after dark.

Full day Chobe — game drive and river cruise
Pre-dawn tea and coffee, then an early morning game drive on the Chobe riverfront while predators are still active and elephant herds return from overnight feeding in the mopane woodlands inland. The northern section of Chobe holds Africa's greatest elephant densities — often 50,000+ in the greater Chobe–Linyanti system during peak dry season. Watch for leopard on termite mounds, hyena at a kill and sable antelope in teak woodland fringes.
Safari activity | Chobe morning game drive
Dawn 4×4 safari on the Serondela river terrace — peak hour for predators, returning elephant herds and close-range buffalo and puku along the permanent Chobe River channel.
Return to the lodge for a full brunch and a midday rest during the heat — read on the deck, swim in the pool or review photos while buffalo and baboon work the riverbank below. Your guide confirms the boat departure time for the afternoon cruise.
Mid-afternoon, transfer to the Kasane boat jetty and board a stable aluminium or pontoon boat for the classic Chobe River sunset cruise — roughly 3 hours on the water as the light turns amber over Namibia's Impalila Island and the Zambezi confluence. From water level you watch hippos yawning, crocodiles sliding off sandbanks, and elephant herds crossing between islands, often swimming with only their trunks above the surface. Pied kingfishers hover, African fish eagles call from dead trees, and buffalo line the banks in the golden hour. This is the experience that defines Chobe — land safaris show you the herds; the boat shows you how they live in and beside the river.
Safari activity | Chobe River sunset boat cruise
Three-hour boat safari at sunset — hippos, crocodiles and elephant herds crossing between Namibia's Impalila Island and Botswana, often swimming trunk-to-trunk metres from the deck. Includes snacks and sundowners on most departures.
Return to the lodge after dark for dinner. Optional night drive may be available from private concessions adjacent to the park — ask your operator when booking.
Same lodge as Day 1
Sunrise game drive — departure
Final sunrise game drive on the riverfront for last-chance sightings — sable antelope in teak woodland, leopard on a termite mound, or a breeding herd of elephant at the water's edge as mist lifts off the Chobe channel. The early hour often delivers the most dramatic light for photography and the quietest viewing before day visitors arrive from Kasane.
Safari activity | Chobe farewell sunrise game drive
Short dawn 4×4 loop on the river terrace — last chance for elephant, buffalo and raptor sightings before checkout and transfer to the airport or Victoria Falls.
Return for breakfast, then check out. Transfer to Victoria Falls airport (Zimbabwe), Livingstone airport (Zambia), or Kasane airport for onward flights to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Maun or the Okavango. Optional extension: half-day visit to Victoria Falls (approx. 1 hour from Kasane) for the guided falls walk, Knife-Edge Bridge viewpoint and Zambezi sunset cruise — a natural add-on after your Chobe river safari.
