Tour overview
The Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) is Botswana’s largest protected area — 52,800 km² of golden grassland, fossil river valleys and acacia scrub where black-maned Kalahari lions, cheetah, brown hyena and vast oryx herds roam with minimal human presence. This 5-day Kalahari experience contrasts sharply with the Okavango’s water world: here the drama is wide horizons, desert-adapted predators and the cultural heritage of the San (Basarwa) people.
Best wildlife viewing follows the rains (December–April) when plains game concentrates on the sweet grasses of the Deception Valley area; dry-season visits still reward with predator tracking and extraordinary starscapes. Most routes combine CKGR with Makgadikgadi Pans or Nxai Pan for meerkat encounters and zebra migrations.

Day-by-day itinerary
Maun to Central Kalahari — Deception Valley
Depart Maun by 4×4 safari vehicle (approx. 4–5 hours on gravel) or charter to a bush airstrip near the reserve boundary. The landscape shifts from Okavango fringe to endless golden grassland — acacia scrub, fossil river valleys and wide horizons that define the Kalahari experience.
Enter Central Kalahari Game Reserve and set up at a mobile camp or fixed lodge on the Deception Valley fringe. Afternoon game drive across open pans — gemsbok (oryx), springbok, red hartebeest and ostrich are common; cheetah scan from termite mounds. Kalahari sunsets turn the grass copper-gold against a sky free of light pollution.
Deception Valley mobile camp or Kalahari Plains Camp
Full day Central Kalahari game drives
Dawn drive seeking black-maned Kalahari lions — males here grow impressive dark manes adapted to the open terrain, a signature of the CKGR gene pool. Brown hyena and bat-eared fox are more visible here than in the Okavango; cheetah use termite mounds as lookout posts across the pans.
Midday rest at camp during heat, then afternoon exploration of Passarge or Piper Pans.
Safari activity | San bush walk with community guides
Track animals, identify edible plants and hear traditional stories of the Kalahari — offered when community guides are available in the concession.
Optional San bush walk with community guides (when offered): a rare cultural layer to the wildlife experience. Night skies here are among the darkest in southern Africa.
CKGR camp
Central Kalahari to Makgadikgadi / Nxai Pan
Morning drive east to the Makgadikgadi Pans ecosystem (approx. 3–4 hours). The landscape transforms — from grassland to the edge of one of the world's largest salt pans, a relic of ancient Lake Makgadikgadi. Afternoon on the Ntwetwe or Sua Pan edge — flamingos when water lingers, otherwise surreal salt-crust landscapes stretching to the horizon.
Some camps offer meerkat habituation walks at dawn tomorrow (book ahead): habituated colonies at Jack's Camp and Meno a Kwena allow close observation as sentries stand guard on termite mounds. Leroo La Tau overlooks the Boteti River where zebra gather in dry season.

Makgadikgadi activities
Choose your focus: meerkat morning with habituated colonies, quad-bike or 4×4 excursion onto the pans (seasonal, when surface is dry), bush brunch, afternoon game drive for brown hyena and bat-eared fox. The Makgadikgadi zebra migration (roughly December–April) brings thousands of animals to the sweet grasses.
Safari activity | Meerkat habituation walk
Dawn walk with habituated meerkat colonies at Jack's Camp or Meno a Kwena — sentries stand guard on termite mounds while the group forages at close range.
Stargazing from camp is exceptional — the Milky Way arcs across a sky free of light pollution. Planet Baobab offers budget accommodation; Jack's Camp delivers luxury on the pan edge.
Makgadikgadi lodge
Makgadikgadi to Maun
Leisurely breakfast and final pan-edge drive — last chance for meerkats, brown hyena or oryx on the salt crust. Return to Maun (approx. 2–3 hours) for afternoon flight connections to Johannesburg, Cape Town or onward to the Okavango and Chobe.
Maun's Thamalakane River frontage offers optional sunset drinks before your flight. The Kalahari contrast — wide horizons and desert-adapted species — complements any Okavango water safari you add next.
