What threats do elephants face?

Elephants are Africa's largest land mammals and among its most intelligent — animals with complex social bonds, long memories, and documented communication behaviours that continue to surprise researchers. They are also in serious trouble. Despite conservation successes in parts of southern Africa, the continental picture over the past half-century is one of dramatic decline driven by human activity.

Understanding these threats is not only important for conservationists. Safari travellers who watch elephant herds in Uganda's Ishasha sector or along the Kazinga Channel are witnessing survivors in a landscape where the species' future is far from guaranteed. The threats elephants face explain why park fees, anti-poaching patrols, and community compensation schemes matter — and why responsible tourism is part of the response.

The scale of decline: what the science shows

In November 2024, researchers led by Colorado State University professor George Wittemyer published the most comprehensive assessment of African elephant populations to date in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study compiled survey data from 475 sites across 37 countries over 53 years.

Key findings include:

  • Savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana) declined by approximately 70% on average at surveyed sites between 1964 and 2016
  • Forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) declined by approximately 90% on average at surveyed sites between 1974 and 2015
  • Combined, populations across surveyed sites fell by 77% on average
  • Northern Sahel countries — Mali, Chad, Nigeria — have lost entire populations due to poaching and weak protection

The WWF notes that forest elephant numbers fell by more than 86% over 31 years, while savanna elephants declined by at least 60% over 50 years, with sharp losses after 2008 when poaching surged. These are not abstract statistics. They represent the disappearance of keystone animals from ecosystems that depend on them.

Threat 1: Poaching and the illegal ivory trade

Poaching remains the most visible threat. Elephants are killed primarily for their tusks, which are trafficked through organised criminal networks to markets — historically concentrated in East and Southeast Asia. Despite an international ivory trade ban under CITES, illegal trade persists.

WWF estimates that in the previous decade, roughly 17,000 African elephants were killed illegally each year for ivory — an average of 47 per day. Poaching peaked around 2011 but continues to threaten populations, especially where protection is weak or conflict disrupts ranger patrols.

Forest elephants have suffered disproportionately. Smaller-bodied and living in dense Central and West African forests, they are harder to monitor and easier to poach without detection. Their slower reproduction rate — females typically calve only every five to six years — means populations recover far more slowly than savanna elephants after poaching surges.

In East Africa, ivory poaching devastated herds in the 1970s and 1980s and surged again in the 2000s–2010s. Uganda's elephant population, once nearly wiped out during civil conflict, has recovered significantly under Uganda Wildlife Authority protection — a rare success story that demonstrates what sustained anti-poaching investment can achieve. Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth now support thousands of elephants, though poaching of individual animals with large tusks remains a concern.

Threat 2: Habitat loss and fragmentation

Agricultural expansion is the leading cause of habitat loss. As Africa's human population grows — projected to reach 2.5 billion by 2050 — farmland, settlements, roads, and infrastructure consume the savannahs, woodlands, and forests elephants need to roam.

Elephants are wide-ranging animals. Savanna elephant herds may travel hundreds of kilometres seasonally to reach water and grazing. When their corridors are cut by fences, highways, railways, and farms, populations become isolated in ecological islands. Genetic diversity drops. Inbreeding risk rises. Herds cannot reach drought refuges.

Save the Elephants identifies habitat fragmentation as a critical threat: elephants crowded into shrinking protected areas compete for limited resources, and the land between parks — critical migration corridors — disappears under cultivation. In Tanzania's Tarangire ecosystem, elephants migrate outside the park in the wet season; when community land is converted to agriculture, those migration routes close.

In Uganda, elephant habitat faces pressure from subsistence farming along park boundaries, charcoal production, and infrastructure projects. Queen Elizabeth National Park's Ishasha sector connects to DRC's Virunga ecosystem — transboundary cooperation is essential because elephants do not stop at border posts.

Threat 3: Human–wildlife conflict

As elephants lose habitat, they increasingly enter human-dominated landscapes. A single night of crop raiding can destroy a family's annual maize harvest. Elephants damage buildings, injure livestock, and occasionally kill people — roughly 100 human deaths per year are attributed to elephants across Africa, with many more injuries.

Retaliation follows. Farmers poison elephants, spear them, or call for government culling. Conservation fails when rural communities see elephants only as a threat to survival, not as an asset.

Save the Elephants notes that as poaching declines in some regions, human–elephant conflict (HEC) is actually increasing — because recovering elephant populations expand into farmland. Livestock encroachment into elephant rangeland compounds the problem: herders compete with elephants for grazing, and nervous elephants attack herders.

East African responses include:

  • Electric fencing and trenches — used around Queen Elizabeth and other parks
  • Beehive fences — elephants avoid bees; hives protect crops and produce honey income
  • Community scouts and early-warning systems — alerting farmers when elephants approach
  • Revenue sharing — Uganda Wildlife Authority returns 20% of park entry fees to frontline parishes
  • Compensation schemes — though these are often underfunded relative to actual crop losses

Threat 4: Climate change and resource competition

Climate change adds pressure by altering rainfall patterns, drying seasonal water sources, and shifting vegetation. When waterholes fail during drought, elephants range further — increasing conflict with farmers. Competition for diminishing resources intensifies within parks as well, affecting calf survival and herd health.

Drought in East Africa in recent years has pushed elephants into riverine areas and community land, making conflict worse even in countries with strong conservation records. Long-term climate projections suggest key elephant habitats will become hotter and drier, requiring adaptive management that protects corridors and water access.

Regional patterns: not all of Africa is the same

The 2024 PNAS study emphasises that declines were not uniform. Southern Africa — particularly Botswana — hosts growing elephant populations where protection and tourism revenue are strong. Eastern and central Africa saw severe losses from poaching and habitat conversion. West and central forest elephant range states face the steepest declines.

For East African safari travellers, this means:

  • Uganda — elephant recovery in Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth is a conservation success, but conflict along boundaries remains acute
  • Kenya — Amboseli, Tsavo, and Samburu hold significant herds, but corridor protection is critical
  • Tanzania — Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ruaha support major populations; migration routes face encroachment
  • Rwanda — only a small forest elephant population persists in Nyungwe and Gishwati forests

Why elephants matter ecologically

Elephants are keystone species and ecosystem engineers. They knock down trees, creating clearings that benefit grazers. They dig waterholes used by other animals during drought. They disperse seeds across vast distances — some tree species depend almost entirely on elephants for seed distribution. Losing elephants reshapes entire landscapes in ways that cascade through food webs.

Their social complexity also makes population loss especially damaging. Elephants mourn their dead, maintain matriarchal knowledge of water sources, and raise calves communally. Removing older females — often the first targets of poachers with large-tusk selection — destroys institutional memory within herds.

How tourism and conservation respond

Safari tourism is not a complete answer, but it funds essential protection. Park entry fees, concession revenue, and photographic tourism create economic incentives to keep elephants alive. In Botswana, tourism-linked conservation underpins the world's largest elephant population. In Uganda, elephant viewing along the Kazinga Channel and in Murchison's delta draws visitors whose fees pay rangers' salaries.

Travellers can support elephant conservation by:

  • Booking through licensed operators who pay official park fees
  • Visiting parks where tourism revenue reaches communities — reducing incentives for poaching and retaliation
  • Choosing itineraries that include under-visited elephant habitats, spreading economic benefit
  • Avoiding products made from ivory or elephant parts
  • Learning about how tourism supports conservation before travelling

Reasons for cautious optimism

The 2024 study is sobering, but it also identifies places where elephant populations have stabilised or grown when protection is consistent. Co-author Fiona Maisels noted that well-protected populations can increase despite surrounding pressures — evidence from sites in Benin, Burkina Faso, and southern Africa.

Uganda's elephant recovery — from fewer than 1,000 in the 1980s to an estimated 6,000+ today — proves that dedicated anti-poaching, cross-border cooperation, and community engagement can reverse trajectories. The threats remain real and multifaceted, but they are not insurmountable where political will and funding align.
