6 Days Prison Island, Mnemba & Zanzibar Tour
Zanzibar · Day-boats & reefs
No-obligation proposal with named lodges, included permits and a complete safari price.
Tour overview
Six days focused on Zanzibar's best marine and island excursions: Prison Island giant tortoises, Mnemba Atoll snorkelling over pristine coral, Stone Town culture, and north-coast beach recovery. Mnemba is a protected atoll off north-east Unguja — turquoise water, reef fish, and occasional dolphin sightings.
Combines two of Zanzibar's most popular half-day trips with adequate beach time. Tide and weather dictate Mnemba boat departures; we schedule on the calmest available morning.

Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive ZNZ — Stone Town welcome
Airport meet-and-greet and transfer to your boutique hotel in Stone Town. Check in among the coral-stone alleyways of Zanzibar's UNESCO quarter — a cultural base before two headline marine excursions.
Evening at leisure. Stroll to Forodhani Gardens for street food, or dine at a rooftop terrace overlooking the dhow harbour. Your guide confirms tomorrow's Prison Island boat and the Mnemba snorkelling day — tide and weather dictate the calmest Mnemba departure window.
Stone Town boutique hotel (2 nights)
Prison Island & Stone Town heritage
Morning boat to Prison Island (Changuu) — a short dhow crossing to see century-old Aldabra giant tortoises and snorkel the fringing reef. Parrotfish, angelfish and occasional sea turtles inhabit the shallow coral gardens.
Prison Island was never actually used as a prison — it served as a quarantine station and later a tortoise sanctuary. The Aldabra giants are remarkably tame and make excellent photographic subjects.
Boat excursion | Prison Island tortoises & reef snorkelling
Half-day dhow to Changuu Island — giant tortoise encounters and guided snorkelling on the fringing reef, one of Zanzibar's classic marine day trips.
Afternoon Stone Town walking tour — House of Wonders, Old Fort, Anglican Cathedral (former slave market), and the famous carved Zanzibar doors. Lunch at a harbour-view rooftop restaurant overlooking the dhow fleet.
Stone Town's UNESCO quarter rewards slow exploration — every alley reveals carved doors, hidden courtyards, and layers of Swahili, Arab and European history. Evening free for Forodhani night market.

Mnemba Atoll snorkelling expedition
Early departure from the Matemwe/Nungwi area for a boat trip to Mnemba Island marine conservation zone — a protected atoll off Zanzibar's north-east coast with turquoise water and pristine coral.
Marine activity | Mnemba Atoll snorkelling
Guided snorkelling in Mnemba's protected waters — reef fish, coral gardens, sandbank stop, and seafood lunch. Tide and weather dictate the calmest departure window.
Guided snorkelling over coral gardens alive with reef fish, a sandbank stop at low tide, and a seafood lunch on board or ashore. Dolphins are occasionally spotted in the channel between Unguja and Mnemba Island.
Mnemba is a protected marine conservation zone with strict visitor limits — advance booking essential. We schedule on the calmest available morning when tide and weather allow the best reef visibility. Return by mid-afternoon.
North-coast beach lodge (3 nights)
Transfer to north-coast lodge — beach check-in
Morning at leisure in Stone Town — last-minute souvenir shopping on Kenyatta Road, a final harbour walk, or relaxed breakfast at the hotel. Mid-morning transfer to your Matemwe/Nungwi beach lodge (approx. 60–90 minutes).
Check in with Indian Ocean views. Afternoon free on the beach — swim, snorkel the house reef, or book a spa treatment. The north coast offers Zanzibar's calmest year-round swimming in reef-protected lagoons.
Evening sunset from the beach — the north coast's west-facing position delivers spectacular Indian Ocean sunsets as fishing dhows return to harbour.
North-coast beach lodge
Beach relaxation & optional diving
Full resort day at leisure — swimming, kayaking, or optional scuba diving on the house reef (PADI centres at Nungwi and Matemwe). Turtle sanctuary visits and village walks are easily arranged from the lodge.
Alternatively, book a second snorkelling trip or simply unwind with full-board dining. The north coast suits travellers who want marine highlights (Prison Island, Mnemba) plus adequate beach recovery without resort-only isolation.
Evening optional sunset dhow cruise — a classic Zanzibar experience with the Indian Ocean turning gold as the day ends.
North-coast beach lodge
Departure from Zanzibar
Leisurely breakfast overlooking the ocean. Check out and transfer to ZNZ airport (approx. 90 minutes from Nungwi/Matemwe). Combines Zanzibar's two best marine excursions with adequate beach recovery — ideal after a mainland Tanzania safari or as a standalone island break.
Prison Island and Mnemba rank among East Africa's finest half-day marine trips; pairing both with north-coast beach time delivers the island highlights without rushing. Tide and weather dictate Mnemba departures — we schedule on the calmest available morning.
