3 Days Akagera National Park Safari

Rwanda · Big game on the savannah

No-obligation proposal with named lodges, included permits and a complete safari price.

Tour overview

A more relaxed 3-Day Akagera National Park Safari  than the two-night dash — adding a full game-drive day, optional night drive, and time to absorb the park's wetland–savannah mosaic without rushing back to Kigali. Akagera National Park is essential for travellers wanting Big Five coverage on the same Rwanda visa as gorilla trekking. Lion and rhino were reintroduced after near-collapse in the 1990s; today the park supports thriving predator and herbivore populations managed jointly by African Parks and RDB. June–September dry season concentrates wildlife near waterholes and Lake Ihema shores.

Day-by-day itinerary

Kigali to Akagera — eastern savannah arrival

Morning pick-up from Kigali or KGL airport. Drive east on paved roads through Rwamagana and Kayonza — Rwanda's tea and rice country — before the landscape opens into acacia savannah and papyrus swamps on the Tanzania border (approx. 2–2.5 hours, 110 km). The shift from Kigali's hilltop suburbs to open plains is dramatic; crested cranes and long-crested eagles are common on roadside wires. Enter Akagera National Park via the southern gate and check in at your lodge inside or on the park boundary. African Parks and RDB have jointly managed the reserve since 2010, reversing decades of poaching that wiped out lion and rhino. Today the park covers roughly 1,122 km² — one-third of it lakes, rivers, and papyrus wetland fed by the Kagera River — and supports reintroduced Big Five populations alongside giraffe, zebra, and 500+ bird species. Afternoon guided game drive on the southern plains and Mutumba Hills circuit. Giraffe, Burchell's zebra, impala, topi, and buffalo herds are reliable first-day sightings; defassa waterbuck and bushbuck graze the lake margins. The Mutumba Hills overlook Lake Ihema and the Tanzania fence line — on clear afternoons you can see across the border into the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem's eastern fringe. Lion and black rhino patrol northern sectors; your guide knows current pride territories and rhino monitoring zones for tomorrow's longer drives.

Safari activity | Afternoon game drive in Akagera

First savannah session on the southern plains and Mutumba Hills — giraffe, zebra, buffalo, and reintroduced lion and rhino on Rwanda's only Big Five reserve, with elevated views over Lake Ihema.
Return to lodge for dinner as the savannah cools and nightjars call from acacia scrub. Ruzizi Tented Lodge sits on Lake Ihema's forested peninsula; Akagera Game Lodge occupies a hilltop above the southern lakes. Magashi Camp, in the remote north, suits travellers wanting a fly-in luxury base — your guide confirms tomorrow's pre-dawn departure time tonight. Drive time: Approx. 2–2.5 hours from Kigali Activity duration: Approx. 3–4 hours afternoon game drive Meals: Lunch and dinner Accommodation: Akagera lodge or tented camp

Full day in Akagera — northern plains & predators

Pre-dawn tea at the lodge, then a sunrise game drive on the northern Kilala Plains and lakeshore tracks — Akagera's most productive predator circuit. Lion prides reintroduced in 2015 hunt zebra and impala at first light; leopard are occasionally spotted on the floodplain edges where thickets meet open grassland. Elephant herds file toward water as the mist lifts; black rhino patrols are focused in the northern sector where African Parks maintains a dedicated monitoring programme. Your ranger-guide reads tracks in the red sandy soil and listens for alarm calls from impala and baboon troops that betray a cat still hunting at dawn. Roan antelope and eland occur on hill country tracks less visited by day-trippers from Kigali; the park's wetland–savannah mosaic supports shoebill stork in papyrus channels on lucky mornings. Game drives typically run 3–4 hours before the heat builds — return to the lodge for a full breakfast on the terrace overlooking the lakes.

Safari activity | Sunrise game drive on Kilala Plains

Dawn drive across acacia woodland and open plains — reintroduced lion and rhino, elephant herds, giraffe, leopard, and prolific birdlife on Rwanda's only savannah reserve.
Midday rest at lodge during the heat — hippo pods grunt from Lake Ihema below Ruzizi's peninsula, and malachite kingfishers dart along the shoreline. Afternoon second game drive on different circuits: the Lake Mihindi tracks and northern lakeshore where buffalo and elephant drink in the dry season (June–September concentrates wildlife near waterholes). Your guide varies the route from this morning to maximise species coverage — southern plains if you spent dawn in the north, or vice versa. Optional night game drive (supplement) after dinner for nocturnal species — genets, bushbabies, white-tailed mongoose, and occasional leopard activity on the floodplain edges. Spotlights pick out eyeshine in the acacia scrub; the park's anti-poaching success means predator densities are rising year on year. Three days here allows this full wildlife rhythm without the rush of a 2-day Kigali return. Activity duration: Approx. 3–4 hours morning drive; approx. 3 hours afternoon drive Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner Accommodation: Same lodge as Day 1

Lake Ihema boat cruise & return to Kigali

Early breakfast, then transfer to the Lake Ihema jetty for a morning boat safari — Akagera's flagship water experience and the complement to two days of savannah game drives. The 2-hour cruise threads papyrus channels where hippos surface at arm's length, Nile crocodiles bask on mud banks, and African fish eagles call from dead trees along the shore. The lake is the park's largest body of water, fed by the Kagera River system that drains into Lake Victoria. Waterbirds are prolific: malachite kingfisher, papyrus gonolek, African jacana, and squacco heron work the floating vegetation; African darter and cormorants dry their wings on sunken logs. Buffalo and elephant herds often drink at the Lake Ihema shoreline in the dry season — your boat captain knows the bays where herds gather before the midday heat. The contrast between open savannah and intimate wetland channels makes this cruise one of East Africa's most accessible hippo and crocodile encounters.

Safari activity | Lake Ihema boat cruise

2-hour boat safari on Akagera's largest lake — hippos, crocodiles, and wetland birds at close range, with buffalo and elephant often drinking at the shoreline.
Return to the lodge for lunch, then a final short game drive en route to the southern gate — last chance for eland on the hills, crowned crane on the roadside, or a lion pride you missed earlier in the trip. Check out and drive west back to Kigali (approx. 2–2.5 hours) through Rwamagana's tea country. Roadside stalls sell fresh pineapple and roasted maize through the Kayonza corridor. Airport drop-off at KGL available for evening international flights — allow adequate buffer after the drive from the park. Three days in Akagera gives proper time for both savannah game drives and the Lake Ihema boat without rushing back to the capital after a single night. Drive time: Approx. 2–2.5 hours return to Kigali Activity duration: Approx. 2 hours boat cruise; optional 1–2 hours final game drive Meals: Breakfast and lunch
