Home FAQ Wildlife safaris

Why are they called the Big Five?

Direct answer

The term comes from 19th- and early-20th-century big-game hunting, when lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino were considered the five most dangerous and difficult animals to hunt on foot—not from their size (hippos and giraffes are larger). Modern safaris use the label for the iconic checklist of species most visitors hope to photograph on a classic African wildlife trip.

Overview

Uganda combines mountain gorilla trekking, classic savannah game viewing, chimpanzee tracking, birding, and cultural experiences in a compact circuit. The right answer depends on your dates, fitness, budget, and whether you travel with a licensed operator who handles permits, road logistics, and park regulations.
