Where to see rothschild’s giraffe — expert Uganda safari guide from local planners who know permits, parks, and realistic routing.
Plan your trip with our best time to see guide, safari experiences, and Uganda safari packages — centred on Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley.
Uganda offers two outstanding destinations for wild Rothschild's giraffe encounters — and they deliver very different safari experiences. Murchison Falls is accessible, prolific, and ideal for first-time visitors and photographers. Kidepo Valley is remote, dramatic, and suited to travellers who want exclusivity and landscape-scale imagery.
This guide compares both parks, identifies the best game-drive circuits, and helps you choose the right destination for your itinerary.
Why Uganda Is the Best Country to See Rothschild's Giraffes
While Rothschild's/Nubian giraffes persist in small numbers in Kenya, South Sudan, and Ethiopia, Uganda holds the largest and most secure populations. Murchison Falls alone supports more giraffes than many entire countries. For travellers whose priority is reliable, close-range, photographic game-drive encounters with this endangered subspecies, Uganda is the clear choice.
1. Murchison Falls National Park — The Premier Destination
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest protected area and the cornerstone of Rothschild's giraffe conservation. The northern bank of the Victoria Nile holds the country's main population — estimated at more than 2,000 individuals — with excellent game-drive infrastructure and lodge options at every budget level.
Why Choose Murchison?
- Largest Rothschild's giraffe population in Africa
- Reliable sightings on most northern bank drives
- Outstanding photographic conditions at dawn and dusk
- Combines giraffes with elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, and Nile boat cruises
- Accessible from Kampala/Entebbe (5–6 hours) or via Pakuba airstrip
- Lodge range from budget bandas to luxury riverside camps
Best Game-Drive Circuits for Giraffes
Buligi Circuit
The peninsula between the Albert and Victoria Nile channels is the single best giraffe drive in Uganda. Open savannah, acacia woodland, and river views produce daily encounters. Dawn on Buligi — with mist rising off the Nile and giraffes silhouetted against orange light — is a signature Murchison experience.
Delta Point Tracks
Where the Nile meets Lake Albert, delta woodlands attract giraffes, elephant, and shoebill stork (seasonal). A full-day combination of Buligi morning and Delta afternoon is a strong two-drive strategy.
Victoria Track and Queen's Track
These northern loops pass through prime browse habitat. Guides often encounter nursery groups of mothers and calves along woodland edges.
Combining Giraffes with Other Murchison Highlights
- Nile launch cruise — hippos, crocodiles, and escarpment views (giraffes occasionally visible from the boat)
- Top of the Falls — the dramatic waterfall viewpoint
- Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary — rhino tracking en route north for a Big Five combination
Best For
- First-time Uganda visitors
- Photographers wanting reliable giraffe subjects
- Families and mixed-interest groups
- 2–4 day northern extensions combined with primate parks
- Budget through luxury travellers
2. Kidepo Valley National Park — The Remote Alternative
Kidepo Valley National Park sits in Uganda's far northeast — bordering South Sudan and Kenya. Isolated, rugged, and strikingly beautiful, Kidepo offers Rothschild's giraffe encounters in a setting unlike anywhere else in East Africa.
Why Choose Kidepo?
- Dramatic kopje and plains scenery
- Uncrowded game drives — often you are the only vehicle
- Reinforced giraffe population of 80+ individuals
- Combines with zebra, buffalo, elephant, lion, and cheetah potential
- Exceptional landscape photography with giraffes as subjects
Best Game-Drive Areas for Giraffes
Narus Valley
The permanent Narus River concentrates wildlife through the dry season. Morning and afternoon drives along the valley floor and edges deliver giraffes alongside buffalo herds, elephant, and predators. The valley's golden light and vast horizons are prized by photographers.
Kakine and Kidepo Valley Floor
Open plains between kopjes hold scattered acacia and browsing giraffes. The drier Kidepo Valley (seasonal river) offers a different aesthetic — stark, expansive, and wild.
Logistics Considerations
Kidepo is remote — roughly 10–12 hours by road from Kampala, or a charter flight to Apoka airstrip. The investment in reach rewards travellers who want exclusivity. Plan a minimum of three nights to justify the journey and allow two full days of game driving.
Best For
- Repeat Uganda visitors seeking something different
- Landscape and wildlife photographers
- Travellers comfortable with remote logistics
- 4–5 day dedicated Kidepo itineraries or fly-in safaris
Murchison vs Kidepo: Quick Comparison
- Giraffe numbers: Murchison (2,000+) vs Kidepo (80+)
- Sighting reliability: Murchison (very high) vs Kidepo (high)
- Accessibility: Murchison (moderate) vs Kidepo (remote)
- Crowds: Murchison (moderate) vs Kidepo (very low)
- Photography style: Murchison (classic savannah) vs Kidepo (dramatic landscape)
- Minimum recommended stay: Murchison (2 nights) vs Kidepo (3 nights)
Other Uganda Locations (Brief Note)
Rothschild's giraffes have been reintroduced to Lake Mburo National Park and Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve through conservation translocations from Murchison. Populations are smaller and sightings less consistent than Murchison or Kidepo. For dedicated giraffe-focused itineraries, we recommend prioritising the two flagship parks above.
Where NOT to Expect Rothschild's Giraffes
Rothschild's giraffes do not occur in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Bwindi, Kibale, or Uganda's southwestern primate circuit. Travellers combining gorilla trekking with giraffe viewing should plan a northern extension to Murchison — the most efficient combination route.
Planning Your Visit
As a Uganda DMC, we route giraffe itineraries around:
- 2–3 day Murchison add-on after gorilla or chimp trekking
- 4–5 day dedicated Murchison with multiple drives and Nile cruise
- 5–7 day Kidepo fly-in for remote photographic safaris
- 10–14 day grand circuit linking southwest primates with northern savannah
