Primarily Grazers
Oribi are overwhelmingly grazer-dependent. Grasses can constitute up to 90 percent of annual intake — among the highest grazer ratios of any African antelope in their size class. Their narrow muzzle and incisor row are adapted for cropping close to the ground, targeting the youngest shoots rather than coarse standing hay.
This specialisation places oribi in the same broad feeding guild as Uganda kob and hartebeest, but at a smaller scale: they exploit fine regrowth on plains edges, burn scars, and lightly grazed flats larger herbivores have already opened.
Preferred Grass Species

After savannah fire, they move onto blackened plains to feed on sprouting shoots — high in protein and easy to crop. Daily Feeding Rhythm
As diurnal ruminants, oribi feed most actively in early morning and late afternoon, resting or ruminating during midday heat — often in shade or tall-grass cover. Dawn drives therefore coincide with heads-down grazing on open plains, the best window for photography and behaviour observation.
Like other bovids, oribi ferment fibrous plant material in a multi-chambered stomach, extracting energy from grass that non-ruminants cannot process efficiently — a key adaptation for small body size on low-quality forage.
Rainy Season Congregation
When widespread rains produce abundant grass, oribi may gather in slightly larger groups on rich flats — a temporary loosening of the usual pair structure. These congregations are feeding opportunities rather than stable herd formation, and they dissolve as dry season concentrates animals near remaining green patches.
Supplementary Foods
Field observations include oribi feeding on flowers and even fungi such as Boletus mushrooms in some areas — minor dietary components but evidence of opportunistic flexibility. Crop damage to wheat and oats has been reported where farmland borders natural grassland — oribi mistake cultivated cereals for preferred grasses, creating occasional human–wildlife friction outside well-managed parks.
Competition and Coexistence
On mixed plains, oribi coexist with:
- Buffalo and zebra: Bulk grazers that open coarse stands; oribi follow for regrowth
- Uganda kob and hartebeest: Partial overlap on open savannah
- Warthog: Different cropping height but shared waterpoints
- Impala (Lake Mburo): Similar size class but different social system
