The African lion (Panthera leo) is one of Africa's most iconic predators and the second-largest big cat in the world after the tiger. Lions are social animals that live in groups called prides and are among the most sought-after wildlife sightings on African safaris. As one of the Big Five animals, lions are a major attraction in Uganda's national parks and throughout Africa.

Lions can be seen in several protected areas across Uganda. Lions are often referred to as the King of the Jungle because of their strength, dominance, and commanding presence. Although lions do not actually live in jungles, their position at the top of the food chain and their majestic appearance have earned them this title for centuries.

Adult male lions typically weigh between 150 and 250 kilograms, while females usually weigh between 110 and 180 kilograms. Males are larger and possess the distinctive mane that helps them appear even more imposing.

Lions can reach speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour (50 miles per hour) over short distances. However, they can only maintain these speeds briefly, relying on stealth and surprise rather than long chases when hunting.
