What is a roan antelope?

The roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus) is a large African grazer known for its grey-brown coat, sweeping ringed horns, and bold black-and-white facial mask. In Uganda, roan are found only in Kidepo Valley National Park and Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve — the country's only reliable wild populations.

Where can I see roan antelope in Uganda?

Kidepo Valley National Park is the primary destination — Narus Valley game drives deliver roan alongside lion, cheetah, and elephant. Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve offers a secondary population on adventurous Karamoja circuits. See our where to see roan antelope guide.

Are there roan antelope in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls?

No — roan antelope do not occur in Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, or Lake Mburo. Uganda's roan are restricted to northeastern savannah reserves. Western and northern classic routes require a dedicated Kidepo or Pian Upe extension.

What is the scientific name of the roan antelope?

Hippotragus equinus — one of two living species in the genus Hippotragus, alongside the sable antelope. The name "equinus" refers to a horse-like build suited to open grassland grazing.

How big is a roan antelope?

Bulls stand roughly 120–140 cm at the shoulder and weigh 240–300 kg. Cows are slightly smaller at 220–250 kg. Both sexes carry long, ringed horns that curve back in a dramatic arc.

How do roan antelope differ from sable antelope?

Roan have a grey-brown coat and bold black-and-white facial mask. Sable bulls are glossy black with white belly markings and a different horn profile. In Uganda: sable at Lake Mburo (reintroduced); roan at Kidepo and Pian Upe.

What do roan antelope eat?

Roan are dedicated grazers — they select medium to tall grasses, favouring fresh growth after fire or rain. Unlike impala or eland, they rarely browse woody plants. Full detail on our roan antelope diet page.

How fast can roan antelope run?

Roan can sustain a powerful gallop across open plains when alarmed — among the faster large antelopes on short distances. Their flight is direct and sustained rather than the pronking leaps of impala.

Are roan antelope endangered?

Globally, roan are classified Least Concern with substantial populations across West and southern Africa. In Uganda, they are locally rare and geographically restricted to Kidepo and Pian Upe — making northeastern reserve protection especially important. See our conservation page.

What predators hunt roan antelope in Kidepo?

Lion, leopard, and spotted hyena are the main roan predators at Kidepo. Cheetah occasionally target calves on open plains. Kidepo's strong predator community partly explains why roan remain vigilant and why dawn drives deliver the most dramatic behaviour.

When is the best time to see roan antelope?

Roan are visible year-round at Kidepo and Pian Upe. Dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer shorter grass, firm tracks, and herds concentrated near water. Dawn and late afternoon are the best times of day. See best time to see roan antelope.

How do roan antelope differ from Uganda kob?

Roan are much larger Hippotragus grazers with ringed horns and facial masks, restricted to northeastern Uganda. Uganda kob are smaller floodplain antelopes using lek breeding displays, common across Queen Elizabeth, Murchison, and Kidepo plains.

What habitat do roan antelope prefer?

Medium to tall grass savannah with scattered trees and water within reach — open enough for grazing, structured enough for shade and predator vigilance. Kidepo's Narus Valley is textbook roan country. Full ecology on our habitat guide.

Do roan antelope live in herds?

Yes. Female herds with calves are the most common sight. Bachelor males form separate groups, and territorial bulls defend grassland patches during breeding peaks. Herds of five to twenty are typical on Kidepo drives.

How far is Kidepo from Kampala?

Kidepo is roughly 700 km northeast of Kampala — about two full days by road via Mbale and Moroto. Scheduled flights to Kidepo airstrip reduce travel to roughly two hours from Entebbe — the practical option for focused roan safaris.

Can I fly to Kidepo for roan antelope safaris?

Yes — AeroLink and charter flights serve Kidepo airstrip near Apoka. Fly-in modules maximise Narus Valley game hours without lengthy Karamoja road transfers. See our fly-in safaris Uganda guide.

Which Uganda safaris include roan antelope viewing?

Any itinerary visiting Kidepo Valley National Park or Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve can include roan. Browse roan antelope safaris and Uganda safari packages for Karamoja routes.

How long is roan antelope pregnancy?

Gestation lasts roughly eight to nine months, producing a single calf. Calving often clusters after rainy periods when fresh grass supports lactating females.

How can tourists help roan antelope conservation?

Visit Kidepo and Pian Upe on licensed safaris, pay official park fees, follow track rules, and choose operators supporting Uganda Wildlife Authority management. Tourism revenue funds rangers who protect Uganda's rarest large antelope populations. More on our conservation page.

What other antelopes share habitat with roan in Kidepo?

Kidepo roan appear alongside eland, Jackson's hartebeest, Uganda kob, oribi, zebra, and buffalo on Narus Valley drives — one of Africa's richest northeastern savannah communities.
