The martial eagle is Africa's largest eagle — a savannah apex predator whose dark silhouette on a thermal can stop a game drive in its tracks. With a wingspan approaching 2.6 metres, barrel chest, and talons capable of taking hares, guineafowl, monitor lizards, and even small antelope, Polemaetus bellicosus embodies the power of open-country raptors. In Uganda's savannah parks — Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Mburo, and remote Kidepo Valley — patient dawn drives reward birders and general safari travellers alike with one of the continent's most sought-after eagle sightings.

Unlike the ubiquitous African fish eagle on every boat cruise, martial eagles are sparser and more elusive. That rarity makes each encounter memorable — a bird whose very presence signals intact savannah food webs and the kind of protected landscape Uganda's national parks were created to preserve.

What Is a Martial Eagle?

The martial eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus) is a large booted eagle — the sole member of its genus — specialised for hunting mammals, birds, and reptiles across sub-Saharan savannah and open woodland. The name bellicosus means warlike or combative, reflecting its formidable hunting power. Adults are dark brown above with white-spotted underwing coverts; the head can show a slight crest when alert. In flight the broad wings and short tail create a distinctive profile against the sky.

For safari travellers building a Uganda raptor list, the martial eagle sits alongside shoebill and African fish eagle as a headline species — but demands savannah game drives rather than wetlands or waterways.

Scientific Classification

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Chordata
  • Class: Aves
  • Order: Accipitriformes
  • Family: Accipitridae
  • Genus: Polemaetus
  • Species: Polemaetus bellicosus

Physical Characteristics

Size and Wingspan

Martial eagles rank among the world's largest eagles. Body length reaches 78 to 96 centimetres; wingspan typically spans 1.9 to 2.6 metres. Females are larger than males — a pattern common among raptors where the bigger sex incubates and defends nestlings.

Weight and Power

Adults weigh roughly 3 to 6.5 kilograms depending on sex and region. The massive talons, thick tarsi, and hooked bill are built for killing prey on the ground — not snatching fish from water. A martial eagle striking a hare or guineafowl delivers one of the most dramatic raptor attacks visible from a safari vehicle.

Juvenile Plumage

Young birds wear paler, streaked underparts and take several years to acquire full adult plumage. Juveniles may soar widely before establishing territories — dawn drives in Murchison or Queen Elizabeth sometimes reveal pale, rangy immatures still learning to hunt.

Hunting Behaviour

Martial eagles hunt from high soaring flight or elevated perches — dead branches, utility pylons in some areas, or the crowns of tall acacias and figs. When prey is spotted they stoop at speed, striking mammals and birds on the ground with extraordinary force. They also pirate kills from other raptors and occasionally feed on carrion. Full hunting detail lives on our behaviour guide and diet page.

Breeding and Slow Reproduction

Pairs are monogamous and territorial across vast home ranges. Nests are enormous stick platforms in the tallest available trees — often visible from game-drive tracks if you know where to look. Clutches are typically a single egg; chick rearing extends many months. This slow breeding strategy makes the species vulnerable to adult mortality from poisoning or persecution — themes explored on our conservation page.

Game-Drive Viewing — The Uganda Advantage

Martial eagles reward travellers who scan the sky. Thermals above savannah lift birds into view mid-morning; perched adults on nest trees or hunt perches offer portrait opportunities. Combine raptor watching with lion, elephant, and Uganda kob on the same dawn circuit — classic Uganda savannah mornings. Plan routes via safari experiences and best time to see.

Conservation Status

The IUCN lists the martial eagle as Endangered. Continental populations have declined sharply through poisoning, electrocution, habitat loss, and persecution. Uganda's protected savannah parks offer refuge — but only with continued anti-poisoning effort and nest-tree protection. Responsible game-drive etiquette near active nests supports breeding success.

Best Time to See Martial Eagles in Uganda

Year-round residents reward dry-season visibility (June–September and December–February) and dawn drives when hunting activity peaks. Breeding months may reveal nest attendance and food deliveries at known trees — always at respectful distance.
